Hi. I am back again. I sold my 10 reg gtr nearly 3 years ago and been without until yesterday.
I had my low mileage bike delivered yesterday, one of the last ones. Unfortunately on the way here it fell over in the van smashing the mirror housing etc. We agreed I would keep the bike here and the dealer would return with new parts and fit them in my garage next week. I won't name the dealer but I trust them having worked with them before.
After he left, I pulled the bike into the garage when it began to run rough and the red light and alternating F I, f i error came on and will not go off despite disconnecting the battery. I called them straight back and they are taking it back to their place to check it after the bank hol. Everything was spot on last week when I went to look at the bike.
Any ideas what it could be, maybe debris in the tank dislodged by the fall, damaged wiring etc
Bit fed up with my new bike just sat in the garage, not the best start to ownership...

I have to say, the 3mph, 16 metre ride into the garge was awesome lol

O.C.

The message is FI... not to be confused with F1.... it's a message that can appear on most GTRs every so often, it never bothered me as it disappears as quickly as it occurs when the bike is in use ...

My first thoughts are that the bike has software designed to cut the fuel in a crash. I had a car (XR3i) many years ago that wouldn't start for no reason. A mechanic friend told me they were prone to a relay failure where the car thought it had been involved in an accident so cut the fuel supply. £2 relay solved it.

The bike going onto its side could trigger that. FI is presumably a fuel injection fault. Whether that will clear itself after the bike is upright for a while or needs Kawasaki to plug a laptop in to reset it is anyone's guess. If they are a Kawasaki dealer they should plug into the ECU and sort that out for you.

Broken mirror suggests the bike hit the side of the van but I'd also check the plastics thoroughly as you don't want a crack to open up month's from now.

I'd be inclined to get something in writing that you can return it for a full refund within say 500 miles if you're not happy.

If they fix the bike and it runs sweet for 500 miles you'll want to keep it.

They do have a tilt switch which will prevent an engine start after its back upright, but thats easily solved by turning the ignition off and on again.  Sounds a bit more to it tham just that

It might pay to be careful of a broken mirror - I suffered the same fate with my GTR (although in different circumstances) and discovered that the mirrors were mounted to an aluminium subframe under the fairing and this too had been damaged. Repair costs were nearly £2,000.

This seemed quite bad news at the time, however a friend of mine had a car park drop in Switzerland with a BMW K1600 GT and found that the same component was part of the frame! His three month old bike was written off by the insurer due to this.

Later K1600's were modified, I understand so that the mirrors are carried on a separate, replaceable subframe, similar to the GTR.

Thanks for the replies. Its handy to get other ideas as to the rough running/f I error. The dealer is a kawasaki main agent so hopefully they can get it sorted, they did a spot on job with my previous gtr when I sent it down the road so we'll see. It's just mighty frustrating have it parked up.
I've been through the bike today, checking behind the panels, oh the joy! I forgot how involved they are to remove, other than the mirror parts it all looks fine really.

Hi
I am having the same F1 error and the bike won't start, have been on the forum to try and solve the problem, but to no avail. I haven't dropped it, just been laid up through winter and when reconnected the battery the fault occurred. I had it booked it for a 20,000 service and the garage cancelled due to the covid 19. Waiting for the garage to reopen and i will have to have the bike relayed there.

If you find out what your problem is/was, please let me know.

Yep, no problem Glen. It's strange, my previous 10 reg bike was faultless. Hopefully the dealer will be picking the bike up late this week. It would be nice to get it back for the weekend but I doubt it.
I'd rather they take their time and give me the bike I bought with no issues.

It seems the bike needs a full battery to start after sitting a while. It'll turn over if the battery isn't fully charged but not start. Turn on the ignition and push the dashboard buttons until you see battery voltage. Watch this as you hit the start button. You want at least 14 volts. Any less, charge the battery.

If you are happy it's not a battery problem it might be old fuel. If the tank is low top it up with fresh fuel. You'll still have some old fuel but hopefully the fresh stuff will increase the octane rating enough to get it going.

Neither might work but both are free.

Found this on Concours 14 forum. FI problems which appear to be poor battery. In reply 8 he says he had 12.7 volts but that's definitely not enough.

Vixer

Just checked mine on the oxford charger not the bike and its showing 12.9volts. I'll have a look on the concours forum when I get home.

The dealer is picking it up today, so I should know by the end of the week.

O.C.

Low battery may be a possibility, but I must add that I have experienced the FI signal on a new GTR which should have had a good battery and strong charge

It would have helped if I'd remembered to attach the link.
