looking to trade in my 04 ZX12 for a brand new green gtr !

- anyone on here done similar and regretted it ?   - just feel that at 48, perhaps my sportsbike days are over and the more upright will be better . Just hoping that the lower power won't equate to a loss of 'fun' ?

Hi & welcome.A wise choice going for the GTR as it offers unquestionable power, comfort, oh and what else did you want....fun. Not a problem, the bike will deliver.  ;D

Hi

I swapped my FJR1300, for the GTR. at first I wasnt sure but ^ months and 71/2K later i   KNOW I did the right thing. The wife says she preferred the pillion position on the Yam but i just love the awesome power of the GTR coupled with the gizmos. It handles in all weathers and grips  well on all surfaces. Truly a gr9 bike. Buy with confidence and you wont regret it

getting there........

Torque on the 1400 is slightly higher than the ZX12 but power is definitely down, especially when you take the shaft losses into account.
That said you probably won't notice much difference unless you often ride above 120Mph or go drag racing.
The extra weight you will notice but she carries it well and cornering is very good.
I'd be interested to hear your comparison of the differences as I've never ridden the ZX12.

Ditch the OEM tyres asap if you feel the handling is poor.
Better yet, insist that they fit decent tyres as part of the deal.
I like the PR3s but others prefer the PR2, Pirelli Angel and Dunlop Roadsmart.
Any of those are better than the BT021s.

I got my new GTR in May and love it, had a ZZR12, thought about a ZZR14 but really glad I went for the GTR, better for higher mileage, I average over 1000 miles a month, better for luggage and pillions. As Boomer says OE rubber is rubbish I couldn't believe the difference when I changed. You won't miss the power, the GTR has plenty and the delivery is so smooth, and it definately loosens up over miles too.

Its plenty fast, plenty fun and plenty comfy (once you set it up for you and find 'your' screen)

Enjoy it

As has been said, a great bike. I got mine in March and have done 9000 miles in8 months. It has never missed abeat. Does everything including great touring at great speed, and if you are sensible you also get over 50MPG. Just took me al couple of weeks to get used to the size and weight, but don't even think of it now, even when two up.

You may find that you have to change your riding style a bit.
A friend of mine - always had sports bikes so far - commented after he had a go on my GTR that at first he tried to ride it the same way he rides his ZX9R but realised very quickly that on the GTR you just sit upright, use the handlebars and enjoy the ride in comfort. Just a bit of counter-steering and she tips into the corners with incredible ease while being solid as a rock even on sharp bends. He was also more than impressed by the smooth power delivery. You open up and she just goes - warp1, warp2, warp 3... no sudden spikes, just power pure!
The later you brake the longer you go fast.

I did have both a 1200 and 900 Triumph Trophy many years ago and thought they were both good bikes - just an old fashioned look - so hopefully the extra size and semi-sit up position will be something similar and not take long to appreciate (though with a far better look and handling/ power/ etc...

I had a 2003 1200 Trophy for 3 years before the GTR. Night and day difference, let me assure you. The Trophy was a pretty good tourer, soft, comfortable, like a faithful old friend. The GTR is a comfortable sportsbike with panniers. Lovely. Copes perfectly with 300 mile days loaded to the gunwhales too.

As for missing the fun part, I also have a ZX10R to play on when I desire. It rarely gets an outing. I can still have lots of fun on the GTR.

Enjoy the new bike, I am confident you will love it.

Martin.
65,000 miles now. Loving this bike.

mjj - sounds just what I'm looking for ----- getting a few too many aches and pains for the ZX12 now, and much as I'd like to keep it for the odd trash, tbh I don't use it anywhere near its potential ( rarely over 110mph) so I'm looking forward to the GTR like a kid a Christmas !

As everyone else has said already there is no way you will regret ordering the Gtr ... it's just a lovely lovely bike ... very swift, comfortable and lots of luggage space with no aches and pains .. just right for a 48 yr old  ;D !!!

Having just got mine this week, after 3 years and 64K on an FJR, then I can happily recommend it.

Differences I've noticed so far:

  • The panniers are bigger, so I can fit my helmet in now, even with the large Cardo fitted
  • My feet get wet  :(  Definitely more water coming onto my feet and up the sides of the fairing
  • The FJR fairing pushed wind onto my helmet and blew the rain off the visor, the GTR is not as good at this.  Guess this means it's a better fairing  ;)
  • Feels faster, but my FJR was tired and didn't like to go above 100
  • 'Keyless' ignition is nice, but the lack of a proper key to open the panniers is a pain.  Just had a new key cut specially to open the panniers  ::)

There's probably a few more things I notice in the next weeks.
Too good a day to die

1ka,
I always have the spare FOB in my pocket and use that for the panniers and tank.
The later you brake the longer you go fast.
