I am considering purchasing a 1400GTR of June 2010 vintage, it has the fob and one key which fits in the bike between the handlebars, is that all you get? or is there supposed to be another key or fob just in case the fob breaks down?

Yes, one fob and one key which should be in a holder. You can use the holder as a spare by holding it against the ignition. One of the members with a 2010 model should be able to confirm.

The older model came with two fobs

I wasn't aware of that. As you say my model, the older model came with two keys. On the newer models then, can you have a spare fob programed, just in case?

Kwikasfuki

Yes, you can have a new fob programmed. I don't know how much its going to cost - fob + reprogramming. You might be better off getting a fob of eBay and getting it programmed.

Am i correct in thinking when buying new you get a large key which fits in the ignition, plus 2 x fobs, one slimline and one normal both of which have keys in? The one i am thinking of purchasing has only the slimline fob and that key is missing?

I dont want to buy the bike and find out the fob goes pop and i have to replace the ECU

Thanks

Alan,

My new 2010 model came with one fob, and one thin credit card type key. The fob contains a removable key blade for tank, panniers etc if needed. The credit card type key has some sort of very short range transponder for KiPass, i.e. it will start the bike if you lose the fob, but you have to mount it in a special slot on the headstock.

Long winded way of saying, yes, the 2010 only gets one fob. My dealer told me £250 to get a second fob supplied and programmed, and I'd just need to prove that the bike was mine (ID, V5 etc) to get a new one coded - OK to do so even if the original fob is lost.

I think you should get one stove key, one fob with key, one slim fob with key. If you don't have the main fob that would be more of a concern than the key being missing from the slim fob.

Holding on thats what, went to the bike show and hate the green one, looked at the BMW 1300GT as well, I reckon I will hang on until the new reg comes out in March and make a decison then.

For the minute my Sprint is in the garage, not worth it in the snow even though I use it every day.

I have to confess I am tempted by the BMW 1300GT as well.
When the time comes to upgrade its going to be a very tough decision

Two GTR's for the price of that. Its not a bad looking bike from a distance, but the layout of the clocks and the facia is bloody ugly.

One day I want a Goldwing, but I dont think I could be swayed to buy that.

Kwikasfuki

Can't say the Goldwing does it for me tbh.

By the time I come to get a new bike I'm praying that Kawasaki have an equivalent. The GTR is a great bike that could be made better by a few tweaks. Its a tourer ffs so add on the tourer extras that people want.
