I've just bought a new lens extender and was going to get a filter just for protection. However I've found out that most professionals/keen amateurs say not to bother because they can cause problems with colour correction when used with modern day digital cameras.

Any thoughts?

Every lens I've ever owned has had a UV filter fitted - as a sacrificial lens protector if nothing else.

This may be worth a read: https://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/filter/filter-UV.html

I always use a clear glass filter on my glass, like everything buy the best you can which will ensure you get minimum distortion and no colour displacement. I've never experienced problems with colour temperature differences but if you did you'd just amend the kelvin.

It's never worth binning a lens off for the sake of a filter.

I'm in agreement with you. It's something I've always done and TBH I will continue to do so.

Lenses do have coating on them to protect them.  having said that, for the most part my lenses always have filters on them...but not all can take them.

I have a Nikon 14-24 that you simply cant fit a traditional filter on it for protection.  I'm also terrified of using the lens in case I scratch the bugger thus it doesnt get used much..

I used to have a Nikon camera until I switched to Sony mirrorless. I couldn't fault it, but when I decided to go full frame, for me at least, the best option was to switch to Sony.

I too had a Nikon, D5500, which was a great camera but switched to a Fujifil XT-1 mirrorless, which is superb....far better than I ever will be  :mfr_lol:

I liked my instamatic 25

I can still remember my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic.  I think they used to take 110 cartridges, the negatives were tiny. My current Sony camera has a 42mp sensor and the average file size of each image is 30mb, how things change.
