Jeez! Thanks all for all the comments!
I never appreciated that taxi / hire could be so effective, but living in the sticks a bit and travelling 40 miles each way to work it just wouldn't be cost effective.
Would love to use the bike every day, but think that would kill my hobby, and not in all weathers!
Do about 5k commuting on the bike annually, but only used when I fancy it.
After thinking long and hard, just bit the bullet and a 2013 VW Golf will be immanently arriving.
Thinking of it as an insurance, Stoli's comments hammered home my fears to hopefully fears negated.  :agree:
As doing about 20K miles a year in the cage, went for the 2.0 oil burner again, 150 bhp, £20 tax and hopefully 55+ mpg.
If the last TDi in the A3 was good for 150k hopefully the new one will!
Time will tell!

A good few years ago there was a study into the cost of running a car the deprivation etc ..com pared to using taxi for all journeys .
Findings were it was over a 12 month period it was 60% cheaper  to use taxis .
And I expect the same would apply now to care rental .

Car rental has got a lot cheaper over the years relative to Mars bars
