Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has had this themselves. Get into second gear and gun it a bit and as the revs increase to around four thousand and upwards im starting to hear a clattering sound almost like loud tappets. Its done 56 k now and ive not done the tappet check yet so is it possible its the cam playing up or a dreaded little end bearing. I thought these engines were bullet proof.
Appreciate any input 👍👍

Really?  You might want to do that as you've missed two of them..  Wild guessing here but it could be the valve clearances.   Oh, I haven't heard of cams playing up or 'dreaded' little end bearing issues with this engine.  It is 'bullet proof', but only if you keep up with the maintenance like valve clearance checks and oil changes.  Where are you getting your information on cam and bearing issues?  I've had this bike since Aug of 07 and there really isn't anything 'dreaded' about it, quite frankly.  Now if you were speaking of a bike manufacturer whose name must not be mentioned (BMW), I could understand your point. :mfr_lol:

Ah forgive my use of words i didnt mean its a dreaded fault with this bike i just meant its a dreadful big job if it is. Ive actually had the bike since 50k so ive only done around six thousand on it but im always tinkering with service issues so im on top of its maintenence always. I wont let anyone else touch it and mechanics was my old game but cars not bikes so wondered if this noise was a common fault and easy fix. O well looks like its a tappet check. I have to assume the first tappet check was done at 25k but have no way of finding out. 🤔🤔

When you start the bike up, does it rattle for a few seconds?

Ah cam chain tensioner no not really it goes straight away. I have a noisy can on it so it may be there at low revs but i cant here it. It doesnt smoke at all so if it was a valve playing up because of a tappet it would probably show some smoke signs but theres none. All very odd. Is it possible the tensioner is week at high revs n allowing the chain to slap a bit. Slthough it does sound a definate rythmic rattle or chatter.  :help:

I don't think so.  Mine only lasts for a few seconds and then I don't hear anything after that.  If it rattled continuously or rattled for more than a few seconds I would say it would be suspect, but in this case, no.  However, I'm not a Kwackers mechanic (I only play one on tv) so my advice is anecdotal at best.

Ill have to do a tappet check n see what shows but cant do it anytime soon so its gonna have to lay up for a while till i get time. A thought comes to me  i adjusted the balancer shafts so maybe they are adjusted up a little too much although would it rattle. I would say either squeal or vibrate more likely. A real puzzle 😫

Wookie

Yep after reading ya posts on balancing shafts THAT'S were I would put me money .
In my experience if you can hear a tappet 9n jap 4 cylinders Alls pretty much ok ... its when you can't hear em it's a worry as they can recede into the seats and really bugger the party.
Never had a bike that needed balancer shafts tweaking and yep I so high mileage in excess of 18k pee annum 😊
Hop this helps 😊

Ye thanks wookie eases my mind a bit. Il av another crack at balancer shafts n see what results i get. Have to say they didnt want adjusting very much compared to other owners who had to turn theres half turns or more. Mine was only a few mill each. O well ill see. 👍👍

Gonna redjust my balancer shafts tday and see if i can get rid of my engine rattle/chatter at revs. Ill let yall know if it works. Its worth knowing the results of over adjustment for anyone who does attempt to do theirs 😉
