Hi All, I recently bought an '09 GTR, and I love it !!!

One small issue is that the key is stuck in the ignition and won't come out when turned to FSS.....I've noticed a few people have had similar problems but can't see if there is a good solution to getting the fekkin thing out !!!

I'm a bit nervous about the mole grip solution if there is something mechanical actually locking it in....

It would be useful to be able to get the thing out as ferreting around for keys in 3 layers of winter clobber is a bit of a pain.

I would try a bit of wd40 , if you have a spare key ,then get a keyless petrol cap , leave it in place never to be touched again , only needing a key for the seat and panniers , the key and holder always seemed a bit like a accident waiting to happen , with a keyless petrol cap you never have to take it out, far safer,  :biker3:

if its stuck tight then some WD40 should ease the situation

I have for some time recommended the use of proper lock grahite powder which if used should NOT be used in conjunction with a product like WD40 which is solvent based and will cause a mighty blockage within the barrel

Here's what I recommend. ....hope this helps and good luck

Unfortunately it may be bent, especially if it's been used externally to the ignition switch itself like the cases and gas tank.  The only way short of a locksmith would be to keep wiggling/prying it and hope for the best.

Here is some entertaining reading on stuck key syndrome from our site..  However, the gist of it is to get a big pair of vice grips and give it a good yank.

Do people leave that key in the ignition when the bike is left etc. I thought you just took the the fob with you. Must admit it all seems a crap system.

It may be crap, but it's our crap.  I never take it out of the ignition.  I have a spare key that I use for the cases and tank.  That stove key is easily bent.  It's made out of  :censored:.

.               It's a good system , all you do is put the fob inside your jacket , walk to the bike and turn the ignition on and away you go , no looking or fumberling about looking for your key or any chance of losing it , do away with the lockable fuel cap ,and it's ideal ,just use a another key for the panniers

I wonder insurance wise then are you supposed to remove the ignition key ?

virginiajim

Beats me.  I've never had an insurance company tell me that I needed to remove it but I'm in the States.  No telling what your ins companies want you to do.  No one can start it without the fob or the rfid card.  Course if you are silly enough to leave the fob on the bike then all bets are off.

The fob is the ignition key ,without that the bike will not start , lose that like some. One did on holiday and its £1500 to put right , my BMW car has a starter Button but without the key it will not start , all it does where the key is ,is to just make it live so you can start the bike ,

The Kawasaki KIPASS system, which the key and fob are integral parts, is an insurance accepted anti theft system

Never had a problem in 110,000 miles of ownership in terms of stuck key.

if your going to use pliers or similar - use a folded tea towel or something similar so you don't scratch the key, be forceful, but only inline with the barrel would be my advice. i.e not sideways.

does the lock click when you push it in?

For the three years that I had a GTR, I didn't ever try to remove the "Stove Key". The fuel cap and panniers were accessed by using the key in the fob, which sat in my wallet whenever the bike was in use. Carrying the fob in this way was prompted by a local dealership sending someone on a demo ride who decided to stop some fifty miles away on the coast for an ice cream and then couldn't restart the bike. The fob was found on the Sales Desk in the Showroom.

I don't see how that could happen, surely the bike cannot be started unless the stove key is in the ignition and in the 'on' position, then surely the stove key cannot be removed when the bike is running ...is it me or have I missed summat
