Thinking of getting a tent and having a go at camping in France next year ,never camped before but fancy the idea , where I can jump on bike and go for a 3-4 day trip to France or longer and not have to book in some where ,but just stop at a small campsite , has any body experience of doing such a thing, if the weather is crap can always B and B it  , after last years trip I found that all the expense was on the places where we stopped , at campsites should meet folk to chat to , is it easy to just stop any where or are sites hard to find , with modern sat nav I thought it should be easy , the tents and associated gear is all light weight so should be easy to carry , the cheaper I can do it the more times I can go ,  or am I just a tight northern git , who's going to struggle, any views welcome ,

It seems that you are indeed a "tight Northern Git"...........................Just like me  :mfr_lol:

Go for it, plenty bikers do

Many years ago.....pre wife period.....I biked down to St Tropez and camped. I didn't book any accommodation, plenty of campsites, your biggest expense will be the fuel costs. The further South you go, the more you have to cough up for the fuel.

For camping always try for municipal sites these are cheaper and owned by local councils and are well kitted out ,showers bars places to eat and always within 5 km of towns ,i have camped in france and always good sites.

We did France, Andora and Spain this year, 14 nights, no problems at all just turning up and finding a site.
Had sussed the first night out before we landed in Bilbao.
This site works well, and you can download the app

There are numerous companies who do organised tours, if you study the sites its easy to pinch the route ideas for some great roads ;-)

Our rough plan is shown here

I did the route de napoleons a couple of years back the only thing booked was the ferry.
I went Southampton zeebrugge.
Just pulled into a campsite when ready allowed enough light for erecting the tent.
The problem I had was her indoors insisted on a proper loo. So we had to check before checking into the site moving on when ready 1 night or 3 our choice.
Go for it and enjoy

Done it many times.. The weak point on French sites is the loo.  Some are fine, but I have been on municipal sites (especially small towns and villages) where its still just  a long drop hole in the ground.  Not good for my bad knees!

Recommend Holland as well as France.  This place is excellent.   http://www.campingzeeburg.nl

Stayed many times on a bike camping but they also have cabins to stay in if the weather is crap

The image sums up, completely, why I do not camp.  Ever.  :mfr_lol:
