I know when I've been out riding with Chris and going down steep hills or tightish corners he's commented to me that I should perhaps be in as low a gear as 2nd. I used to think that that would be too low however I respect Chris, he has immense knowledge and what he doesn't know about biking technique probably isn't worth knowing.

Now having applied this technique for some considerable time I've learnt that it does work, the engine isn't going to blow up & I'm not going to rip the gear box out etc, and most importantly the bike feels solid and the stability of the bike is spot on.

the bike does 90mph (apparently m'lud) in second. Never be afraid of the red line.

Twisty 'B' roads are devoured using 3rd and 4th.

Time and again I see riders who ride their bike like they drive their car, engaging in a race to get in 5th/top gear. Bikes are meant to rev and they are easier to ride and more stable when in a responsive gear.

The GTR, despite 1400cc and lots of horsepower, will still go 'blerrrrr' when you open the throttle if in too high a gear, just the same as it will run wide/need brakes when you shut it (like any other bike).
