Hi all,
I have stripped the fairings off the bike and will shortly be replacing the broken ones and getting the scratched one re-sprayed after a recent 'parked drop' ......DON'T ask!!!!

Anyway.. I have found the 'spare' accessory wires 'hidden' under the rubber boot on the left hand side, and am tempted to use these to wire in a double USB charger socket into the spare L/H side socket.

Anyone done this ? Any advice, hints and tips?

Also, Iv'e trawled through the forum and can't find the post(s) detailing which wires are which, so a reminder or pointing me in the right direction would be HUGELY appreciated.

Cheers
I came, I saw, I rode off....

Just did mine last weekend, I have a 2008 vintage, the tank cubby hole works a treat for housing the USB and Sat-Nav connectors, and phone when charging on USB fits a treat!
Wiring as is on mine........
Black = the +ve feed from the aux relay, this is the insulated female connector.
Black / Yellow = ground or earth - the male bullet connector
Confirmed in user manual - http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/downloads/ownersmanual.pdf - page 109.

Debs has done this she fitted it on the dummy cover on the left simular to the socket .
Try finding her post I recall the post saying there was steel behind the plastic and you may need a tank cutter and file.

if you want to put a proper cig lighter charging point in the spare left cover then you will need to holesaw out the metal bracket directly behind the blanking plug

make sure your charging point has a good quality rubber door/cover on it

i put the usb into the glove box so my phone charges up on the move and also i can connect my sena headset when that goes flat. it's ace.

I did mine and then drilled the hole Deb's wanted aqs I had the cutter to hand - really simple job and fitted a twin USB outlet with rain cover. Did it about 18 months ago and not had any issues as yet.

I couldn't use the glove box on my 11 plate as the damn phone (S3) is too tall with the charging cable plugged in :(

Perhaps an angled USB cable would work?

The connector sticks out 14mm, rather than the usual 25mm+

I don't suppose anyone took any photos of where the accessory power can be taken from the front of the bike? I can see the rubber boot but before I start dismantling my shiny new bike I want to make sure I know what I am attacking! ;)

I'd like to attach my GPS to the accessory feed and the front seems the most logical place to do it. Unfortunately the dealer wasn't sure where the power was... I'd rather not start splicing wires if a connector is available.

This question crops up time and time again. If you can see the rubber boot to the nearside under the fairing then you have found the accessory leads. Just be careful taking the nearside fairing off, its easy to do but be gentle so that you don't snap any lugs off the plastics.

Debs

They are very easy to find Ant..

This is what I did with the help from Pete to drill the hole out.

Most things nowadays are charged via USB, so fitted both sides.

Is there a guide anywhere for removing the side fairing to get at the accessory leads? I think I can see how to do it from looking at the various fixings. But a guide is always welcome before I snap a panel on my new bike ;)

exBanditOwner

remove windshield
remove the little push fitting
remove middle tank cover bit
look in glove box - undo the screw at the bottom
undo the allen head screws holding the part in place
lift top fairing off.
disconnect wires for heated grips and glovebox solenoid
