Is that code for "Sidewinder Missile System" ?

If so ........................Big Al / Debs / and I will help fit it .....................after the electronic cruise control the three of us are hungry for our next tech challenge

Less technical it may be, but a bag of poo thrown through an open window may be just as satisfying.

The old hi viz debate, does it work, does it not work? I do like to wear mine when I'm out, peace of mind I guess just in case. Hopefully if the worst ever happened at least I can say I did everything I could to ensure I was seen.

I'm not sure how much you've just paid for your vest but I tend to buy mine from builders merchants these days. Although mines not an over jacket its just a bib thing I only pay £4.99 for them. The high viz vest I bought a couple of years ago and paid £45 for, from Get Geared in Leeds for my trip to Scotland self destructed on the way home. Popped into a local builders merchants who sorted me out for £5. Cant go wrong at that.

When they get too grubby to wash and come clean I just bin them and get another.

Which is exactlly what i do. If nothing else the insurance company cant say i could not be seen, and i am also a cheapskate.

As Steve says the debate surrounding 'to Hi Vis or not to Hi Vis' has been well covered on many bike forums for years, and the opinion as to whether  it works or not will, I suspect, continue for some time yet.

Tapps my View, for what its worth is....if it makes you feel safer and more visible to other road users then wear it mate

Steve is right about the inflated prices charged by some outlets and a 'construction' variety is just as visible and a whole lot cheaper

You can always check out the stock on here

I wouldn't go for anything that looks like Police apparel though in today's current climate of unrest among certain individuals.

tapps

Ant

Unfortunately vehicles will always pullout in front of you no matter what you wear or ride like.

My thinking is, if you think everyone will pull out, your ready if they do.
If they can't see lights, they can't see !!
Don't speed or over overtake near junctions.
Car drivers generally can't judge speed and are in a world of their own.

If wearing hi vis helps, then great....i only wear my waterproof hi vis if I'm cold, its wet or at night.

Debs

There's quite a bit of sense in what you said Ant.

I wear a pink vest over my jacket and have hi viz on my bike. When I was on my IAM I was told that even though you can see my bike coming from a mile away, drivers can get distracted by watching me and not the road. We all know what drivers do when there's a fender bender on the motorway, on the opposite side to them..

I won't change what I am doing, just hope it makes that one extra idiot take notice..

I'm going to add my 2p.....  firstly this is the SMIDSY....  Sorry Mate, I Didn't See You.

If they are not looking, you can wear whatever you like, including nothing - and they won't see you.  ride in the country much around autumn time? - Hi Vis will make you even more invisible with a back drop of yellow leaf trees.  :-)

Active driving is what you need to do - if you see a car that you don't think has seen you - can you see the drivers face? when you do - move the bike 1 foot to the left or right and you will be more successful, if not - slow down.

When a light (or two on the gtr) is seen by a car, the bike can change approximate distance very rapidly... 100m? maybe?  but the perceptible light or brightness of the lights won't change and will look like it is not moving or static and people pull out....  By moving either side (not erratically), you will change the perception and angle at which the driver is seeing you - Human eyesight is designed to pick up movement and will highlight to the "blind tin can driver" that something is moving..... it may not stop them pulling out, but your playing with the driver peripheral vision... also - sound your horn - thats what it is there for..... if you can't do any of those things - your going too fast  :-(  <---  usually me.

Thats the theory anyway - I hate health and safety grrrrr....
