I got spare lamps from Halfords...they are well boxed...pop in a small tupperware container with some bubble wrap...hey presto!! ;D....ps you only need one main light and one indicator lamp ;D
It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

I've seen H4 based kits in Pound Shop, good enough for spot checks :-) My OE H4's are sat in cupboard, I've had Philips lamps in from new.

A friend got pulled in France and they got really upset that he didn't have a spare tail-light bulb.
When he pointed out that they were LED's the cop went quiet and soon waved him on his way.
You also have to have a Hi-Vis jacket or waistcoat with you in France.
Emergency triangle is not required (is for cars) but you still have to carry an approved 1st Aid kit.

I got one from Aldi for £3.50. Its a car kit in a plastic case so it has 2 of everything. Cheap and nasty but enough to satisfy the police requirements.

Hans

GTRTONY: Why? You can buy bulbs anywhere?  ;D

Hmmm... strange! Those rules dont apply for bikers... only cars!  (ie. Hi-Vis jacket etc.)
And that goes for 1st Aid kit as well...

Nope.......Hi Vis Jackets, spare lamps, first aid kits are required by bikers...its just the Breakdown triangle that isn't ... but more to the point, why wouldn't you carry these items on tour with you in the first place

If your Headlight dies on a sunday in France......well then you can't buy a bulb from anywhere...in factg you can't buy a bulb anywhere at all!!.......think about the areas most bikers go in France, often rural, and very often 'closed' ;D

yes that's what I've heard. the reason for the box etc is somewhere to keep them safe in case I do need them rather than making something myself. was just wondering if anyone out there knows of such a kit. as it is mentioned they do them for cars so why not for bikes?!! ???

Fatharry:  Hmmm... strange! Rules dont apply for others than UK residents. I just checked with the Danish Foreign Ministry (transport & service) and they said that this ONLY applies to cars and trucks.

Regarding the purchase of bulbs in france or anywhere else (on the other side) - there are so many, large and well equipped service stations that sell standard H4 bulbs - it's not a problem. And incidentally, there is also mounted not less than 2 units H4 bulbs in our glorious GTR1400 machine ... surely one of them will survive? Or?   ;D

Driving Touring is not about to burden and overwhelm our beloved motorcycle with a lot of equipment that you do not need. And besides, it is possible to have roadside assistance anywhere. Why all that gear? Was it not something you did back in the 70s?  :P

So what do people do with cars/bikes with closed units for headlights where you can't replace the bulb? Do they have to carry a whole light unit with them?
Who comes up with such stupid rules?
The later you brake the longer you go fast.

Hans....I suspect it is different rules for the Danes ......

Says lamps are recommended for France but not compulsory, but seeing as daytime running lights are compulsory....the police take a dim view if one has failed...despite the fact that the other is working. Personally if you want to take a chance on a petrol station being open......then crack on my friend, I think you've been to a different part of France to me.....rural France, mostly everything closes 12-2 everyday, all day sunday.....petrol stations are just pumps unless you are in Large city, no shop...no bike spares, no coffee...just petrol. First aid kit is now compulsory in most European countries .... So if I were you I'd always carry one

Touring is in part about being prepared.... First aid kit, hi viz and bulbs take up very little space...despite the nay sayers, these should be carried, especially if you're roaming through more than one country....like from denmark to France, where you would have to pass through Germany, where first aid kits and bulbs are a legal requirement ..... And hi viz must be worn at the side of a road in France (accident or breakdown).... So just take em....or not.....but you take your chances and could be handed an on the spot fine ;D

Which bike has sealed headlight units......?

The tail/brake light before you mention is and led unit an theoretically should never fail....if it stops working, it's considered a breakdown and should be fixed!....I believe

I don't know for sure if bikes have sealed units, but I thought my 1250 Bandit actually did have one.
But I never had to change a light bulb on a bike yet.
I know that nearly all modern cars have them these days, though.

But if the frogs have such stupid rules I better buy a car bulb kit at Aldi before I go over next month.
I wear a hi-viz jacket anyway, but that with the 1st aid kit can't be right.
Where do all those French sports bike riders hide them? It sure won't fit under the seat.
Even though it won't help them much when they come off since most of those idiots whizz around in jeans and t-shirt.
