Out of interest who does the servicing for you and what does it cost?

Autorama @ Batley (Kawasaki dealership) and last cost was £250

Mr Blek

Has anyone attempted this modification on a 2010 model?

Rawman

Non-abs 2010 will be fine.  The ABS model on the other hand would make the KTRC not perform as it should.  KTRC (Traction Control-prevents rear wheel spin, like on gravel) uses 3 things to control wheel spin; Air, Fuel, Engine Timing.  The secondary butterflies control the Air Portion of KRTC by closing them.  Removing them might disable KTRC or may not affect it all.  Someone just needs to try it (keeping all the screws and flys to re-assemble, if necessary) and report back on the KTRC.  I wouldn't hesitate if I owned a 2010, because KTRC isn't important to me.

Some riders in the states have pulled the flies without issues. If you are going to try this with the intention of undoing the mod bear in mind you will probably need new screws and some sort of mild agent so they don't come undone. Don't use any agent medium strength or above as you probably won't be able to get them out again.

I am gonna be doing this in the spring.  When the time is right would appreciate a chat on how this is done.  Given I have a 2010 model we can see if the KTRC goes to sleep....

Did you get a custom map done?

Nope, didn't get a custom map. I bought the auto tune which I ave yet to put on. The hinderance is the existing O2 sensors. At the moment I'm running with the map for the '10 model which is fine. I'm looking to get the AutoTune setup sometime this summer.

Removing the flies isn't that hard - just gut wrenching as you don't want to mess the screw head up. Apparently if you apply some heat first to the screws it makes the job easier.

When I come to sell the bike I'm probably going to put the flies back in. Any idea what size screw and what thread locker to put on? If I use blue chances are the next person will never get them out, and put on something too weak and there could be engine trouble.

Or should I just leave them off?

I'd put them back in otherwise you'll scare the living daylights out of any new owner. Plus it could affect their insurance if the bike ever got examined after an accident if they hadn't declared any modifications because they didn't know about what you had done, it could null and void their policy.

Rusty

More like null and void him !!

Kwikasfuki

I will put them back in, just need to know the screw size and what thread locker to use

Hmm. This means a new bike coming next year.

I'm still waiting for Kawasaki to offer the interest free finance again and I'll be there with you. I'm not convinced I'd get rid of the current GTR though.

I do think to myself why do I want to get rid of my current GTR as it ticks all the boxes. But I also like new toys :D

Andy

Hi Andy
The purpose of the secondary throttles is primaraly to smooth out airflow to stop bogging then surging when the throttle is opened sharply, and to generally give a smoother power delivery.
They are also used to reduce power under certain circumstances, such as traction control operation or gearchanging.
On the 1400s the secondary throttle shaft also has a cam on one end which can open the main throttle and is used as a fast idle device for cold starts.
I know that owners of the early bikes removed them as the 2006 model had their operation set to make power delivery smooth and docile below 5000 rpm.
Removing the secondary throttle can lead to a coarser power delivery and less driveability.
Hope this helps.

I assume he's talking about the ZZR there.
Drivability? Makes my GTR even more driveable!

No, I asked question about GTR (he refers to traction control) but he seems to refer to original ZZR's also.
