Evening folks

Some more interesting reading for you....

I'm been a bit obsessive about oils lately so thought I'd check out my final drive oil.  See pictures below and let me know whether you think its normal or needs replacing.  The oil is very thick, dirty dark lime green colour with slightly metallic look.

just change it , ignore kawasakis service schedule on this and change everytime you do your engine oil , get a 1 ltr bottle of 80w 90 , right the mileage on the bottle each time you change it and it will be good for 4 or 5 sessions

Final drive oil change failures have been known and many dealers are not aware it has to be changed
BTW , it does look a bit skanky

I can sort that next week as well.  Only needs 150ml

I've never seen green oil before! Get it changed, I take it you know how to replace it, i.e. don't turn the wheel after you've drained it or while you're refilling it?

Stupid question maybe but why not ?

It affects the indication as to how much you've put in, or think you've put in. The manual says that when refilling the final drive oil, the rear wheel should remain static. If it accidentally rotates then you should wait thirty minutes for the oil to settle before continuing so that you replenish with the correct quantity.

My local independant told me final drive oil is good for 20 thousand miles and not to worry about it.
When did anyone last change the diff oil in their car? Probably never.
However I had mine changed along with the oil at 4k, as it's a five minute job , 160 ml oil , so why not.

Put 4k on her since last oil change so will have that changed at easter, but won't bother with the final drive

he is probably correct, but as the oil is so damn easy and so damn cheap to do then why not do it more frequently. Average milages in bikes are much less than cars and some bikes take several years to get to 20k. The main problem with unit failure is that the oil was not changed after break in, my kawasaki dealer failed to change it on first service !

Just be careful when tightening the bleed bolt. It doesn't need much torque at all

good tip thanks Asif  I'm currently in the process of prepping for spring with an oil/filter change and some PR4's. After such a torrential winter, I feel a long hot summer coming on...surely?

I've got a filler/level plug and a drain plug, but I can't see how to bleed it, or why

:agree:Yes I totally agree; the oil should be changed on the first service. I bought my my bike with 1600 miles on the clock and doubt it was ever done which is why i changed it at 4k
