Need some advice please guys. My mate has a 2009 GTR. Riding the bike the whole week without any problems. Parked yesterday and when he wanted to leave, the bike would not start. In fact, when he turned the bike on, nothing happened. Screen did not even come on. He did place the FOB on neck of bike but still nothing. Checked the battery but that is still OK.

Any advice/ideas ?????

Thanks

If he's turned the knob then the fob must be ok.  I'd be looking initially at the bikes battery.

Ignition does not come on
Dash does not come on
Fuel pump does not prime
All fuses checked - all OK

Is there any current passing through the fuses?

Do not know. Anyway, bike is now with a sparky so we'll see what he finds.

Before the key is turned, does pushing down on the key illuminate the dash display? The first thing that has to happen on a C-14 (GTR) is that the KiPass activation switch must be closed, which in turn powers up the KiPass system along with the dash. There is a pretty well known problem with that activation switch sticking down or 'ON', and when that happens KiPass will de- activate the system to protect it from killing the battery. The problem comes to light when one again begins the starting process by pressing down on the ignition switch key at which point nothing happens- this is because the switch is already ON and the circuit must be broken to reactivate it. The key has a built- in ratchet mechanism so it will not be broken off should someone try to turn it without a valid fob so that may be what is turning, the key but not the actual ignition switch.

I can expand on this as to possible work- arounds, and there is a commercial product that I sell but I do not want to go any further if that violates forum rules: Mods- please let me know what is OK to post.

In the meantime, sometimes the switch can be shocked into freeing up; the well known method on this side of the pond is known as the K-rock fix, which is taking something heavy (like a rock) and beating on the ignition switch housing until the switch pops free. A somewhat more elegant solution is to push down on the key until it bottoms out and slide your thumb off the key sideways to allow the key to snap back up under spring force as hard as it will- this will occasionally free up a sticking switch.

The better and 'official' solution is to have the dealer take the ign. switch apart, clean and lube the internals and then put in a heavier spring supplied by Kawasaki. Unfortunately the bike has to be towed to the dealer unless a work- around solution is used in the meantime to get the bike going when it strands the rider.

Just some feedback as a matter of interest.
As I said, he took the bike to a well known "sparky" in town. After a thorough check and strip, the "sparky" found 2 dead shorts "deep" in the harness. One from the aux lighter housing and one from the ignition switch. Seems like water or moisture penetrated the harness and caused corrosion.
At least the cause was found and he should be up and running today.

Thank you all for your feedback on this issue.
