Mr Zed, please don't shoot the messenger but that no longer applies unfortunately.
I had to do a power point presentation on this exact topic last year or the year before at work and if I can upload it to Photobucket I'll post a link to it on here, however Burton v Evitt 2011 is now the benchmark which the Courts will apply.

Couldn't upload the power point but here's a link to an article about the new benchmark.

With a bike as big as the GTR filleting is difficult at the best of times especially with the panniers on. My rule is that as soon as traffic starts moving I stop filtering.

However, when filtering there is always some driver that decides you ain't going past them and sets out deliberately to cut you off. Then there's the idiot who inches out so they can see the cause of the traffic jam. And now there's those on their mobiles who aren't paying attention and just drift all over the place.

Interesting Steve..........................confirms the doctrine "Ride Defensive Not Offensive"  :ninja:

The key factor seems to be 'speed'.

The Courts have decided that you should not filter past other vehicles at a speed greater than 15mph above theirs.

O.C.

What happened to common sense..you should only ever filter with extreme care.

Couple of interesting videos on filtering:

The actress is a bit wooden, or maybe her leathers are too tight:

Some interesting studies and statistics at the end:

Stephen, the second video I have seen before.
I have to admit and I'm sure Asif will testify to this I have previously been backwards at coming forward re filtering when out on rides. I've always considered it a bit 'aggressive' and 'too risky' however since I did my RoSPA & my IAM training in particular, which I preferred over RoSPA I have become a more assertive and confident rider.
I do now filter whenever possible and in retrospect should have done it more, years ago! Done safely and responsibly it's perfectly safe and I have found that you do to a certain degree learn to 'anticipate' what others around you are planning to do. I do however still ride my own ride and will not be coerced into making decisions which I don't feel comfortable with.

O.C.

I see there's currently a T.V commercial advising about the dangers of 'filtering', the advert is aimed at motorcyclists and advises them to take care when filtering, which is very good advice.

However some car drivers need to be educated about their own awareness when they are stuck in traffic jams or are simply travelling slowly, its a time when they are distracted by mobile phones, adjusting the radio, partly pulling into and adjacent lane to get a better view or simply to stop a motorcyclist from filtering through, and sometimes they may just be oggling a blonde in the car next to them.

OC, your last paragraph above, totally agree especially where HGV drivers are concerned, a bloody menace on the road they are.

Debs, that sums it up very nicely indeed. Clearly a very simple scenario which presents itself or could present itself with every single car you filter past.

Thats what I thought Steve... I will be taking a lot more care when filtering from now on..
