Just wandering what oil you use or reccomend ,engine oil and which oil filter is better ,also what shaft oil i know gl 5  but which make.

Lonewolf

I used a genuine Kawasaki oil filter which I think was about £5 approx. Motul engine oil, 10w 40, & Castrol Differential EXP 80w-90 gear oil G5.

At what frequency is everyone changing the shaft oil?

I just changed mine when I changed the engine oil which was 4000 miles approx after the last dealer service. The gear oil was as black as black could be, I dont know what time scales it should be done at for best results.

Old gear oil...

New gear oil....

Done One:

  • Go to garage/back yard/place of storage for GTR
  • Ensure Fob is present and start GTR
  • Ride to Dealership - Leave GTR for service
  • Return at set time, pay dealer and ride home

Now where's the fun in that?  ::)

Engine oil & filter every 8,000 miles.
Use a Kawasaki filter and Halfords 10W40 Semi-synth (green bottle).

Final drive oil every 18,000 miles.
Use Halfords EP80/90 GL5 http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_220229_langId_-1_categoryId_165750

I pretty much stick to the service intervals in the Service Manual.
Didn't get the spark plugs changed until 27,000 miles though.
Glad I didn't as would have been a waste of money.
At 27,000 miles they were still in very good condition.

1 more question any reccomendations on anotyher oil filter as nearest kawa dealer is 220 miles away and would cost to much to ship.

zedmeister

i give the bike a mini service every 4000 change both the oils then, i use genuine kawasaki filter and 10/40 semi syn  / 80 gear oil and chain lube for the linkages / pegs / levers / seat lock.
get a grip and deal with it

George - I thought the Green bottle was the car stuff?

It is but it meets all the requirements in the Kawasaki manual so I can't think of a good reason to fork out more money for something that says Motorcycle on it or has a particular brand name. I ran the same oil for over 250,000 miles in my GTR1000's and apart from damage I personally caused they all thrived on it.

The whole "this oil is better than that oil" is a load of old bollox, IMHO.
You can't use an oil that has a friction modifier due to the wet clutch.
You may get slightly cooler running with a full synth but is it worth the money?
I replace the oil filter every oil change.
