Yep, I'm after one of those new fangled dehumidifier thing a me bobs. Summat suitable for a single garage. Anybody got one for sale or can anyone recommend one please?

Richard

Hi

From experience, have one in the house (stone built in 1896) for the winter months and one in the workshop store room (part of the Chapel)

Get a proper one: -
Refrigeration system with a compressor, refrigerant gas etc, not a crystal thing
Don't worry about automatic humidity sensors if it hasn't got one, just stick it on a time clock so its on for 3 or 4 hrs a day
A drain system you can connect to a pipe is handy, saves emptying the tank, assuming you have somewhere you can plumb it too

O.C.

I've used one of these for about three years now, it works well and keeps the investments dry and condensation free

Hi

I have one of these (or at least similar)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Delonghi-DEM10-Compact-Portale-Dehumidifier-10LT-24Hrs-/390413984873?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item5ae67ca469

It worked so well it upset the gf's skin because the house (yes -house) was so dry.....

Steve ... Mine came from B&Q a few years ago .... It's on from October to about March 24/7  .. No idea of running costs and TBH I don't care ... The bike and all my kit is always dry .. Paid about £120 .. Is that about right these days ? Get one.

ADVICE,i have an out building about 50 yards away from the house, with no main power, however i can run an extension lead to it,i have 2 bikes parked in there,a gtr1400 & an xjr1300,in the past i've noticed they have been damp, will it pay me to get a dehumidifier & only run it for a few hours a day, will i be wasting my time & money if not running it 24/7,will it benefit me to do so.i have had condensation in the speedo & rev counter on the gtr,it's to be discussed with my dealer on the 12th of july when it's in for a service.

Lonewolf

Tapps it certainly can't do any harm. I haven't used one yet so I'm unsure how long it should by run for.

Taps,  :agree:but in my opinion in a place like a garage, shed lockup etc you're wasting your hard earned dosh.  Your bikes probably getting warm during the day and at night condensation forms on the cooled bits. It happens on cars all the time and they don't fall to pieces (well some might). If however, tumble driers are running or at some stage it's been flooded then maybe it could do with a humidifier.

 :agree:
A bike is made for riding in the open rain or shine not for preserving in a shed!

Of course you can always put the bike in the house and move into the shed.  :mfr_lol:

The problem with my garage is I get a lot of damp on the garage floor coming up through the concrete. Either that or the concrete is sweating a lot. If I had the money I'd demolish it and start again and have it built right.

I went down the dehumidifier route but if you've got a damp problem then I'd try and cure the problem than battle the symptoms. I have separate garage with concrete flor lower than the ground level outside. Consequently I got moisture ingress which until last year was a pain. I was emptying the dehumidifier tank by a fish tank pump from the house and extracting 5L every other day. My R1 was brought into the house but Tigers remained and suffered. The GTR and Tenere are protected now as I treated the exterior walls with stuff called "ultra cure" injection cream and rubberised tanking paint. Touchwood I haven't had any issues. The carpet remains dry against the wall and my Haynes manuals remain non-damp ( paper is a dead giveaway)
It's really better to remedy it if you can.

SirToU

Agreed, fix the environment if you can....

Alternatively a dehumidifier will work, and mine has a pipe that you can connect to something else(hose) and put to drain or outside.

Tapps .... If your shed or garage whatever you call it is pretty solid and wind proof then I would go down the DH route but leave it on ... No point using it for a few hours a day as you will achieve nothing .... If its not then look to rebuild if you have the £ or the know how or look to rent something more solid. I know it's easier said than done but just my thoughts mate.
Steve ... Have you thought of sealing your garage floor ? Seal it and paint it with  stuff from Wickes ... 17 years later its still good and if I was at home now it's one of those jobs that needs doing in the warm weather .....

Lonewolf

The problem with my garage floor is that its about four inches below the level of the house, the concrete is uneven and cracked to buggary but solid. Ideally it needs a a thick layer of concrete dropping in it, possibly even with a membrane between the existing surface and the new layer of concrete. Then a lock of paint and a small leak in the roof fixing and it could be a half decent garage.

Rusty

Well Steve what are you waiting for ? Take advantage of the warm weather and get on with it .... Next time I come up I expect it to be done  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
