This may prove useful if your tps battery is dead and you're out of warranty

Good thread, good idea and something that may come in time.

that's an excellent idea  but useless to me now I don't have the gtr anymore  that's the one thing with the gtr that wound me me up "sideways" the fact that if and when you need a new battery it was off to the stealers to remove £250 smackaroons from your wallet  for the sake of a £2.00 bloody battery. what was kawasaki thinking off when they designed a tyre sensor that when the battery failed you would need to pay for a new full sensor then pay to have it programmed to the e.c.u   bloody idiots... lets hope the idiot that thought of that idea as been "BINNED" and sent to the looney house

Can anyone confirm whether the TPS have a 5 year warranty? My front one keeps telling me battery is low..

I spoke to simon chitty at kawasaki customer services about this  he said he would expect the batterys to last 2 years and would be replaced if they were to fail with-in the warranty. after that, it's up to their discretion or if they would offer a discount if with-in "grace period" shortly afterwards!! to be honest it's a really bad design which lets the rest of the bike down.

The irony is that I don't think this is confined to just Kawasaki bikes
in a year or two time TPS is to be compulsory on new cars; no doubt bikes will be close behind- the argument is not just safety but carbon footprint reduction too ( yawn )
My mazda 6 had tps failure due to corrosion of the valve stems; it let go at around a ton. They were replaced under a recall ; eighty pounds each plus the fitting but mazda wiouldn't pay for my fried tyre!!
Because the air was let out so quickly the tps was in effect useless although i did slowto a stop cos i saw the warning light
the RAC chap that came out told me that they were usually useless; most tyres were damaged beyond repair (rapid failure at speed) which rendered the tyre repair kit useless too. My car had to be recovered, the tyre was unrepairable
So it seems that as technology moves forward, the price of repairs does too.

So far i am not getting any low battery warnings on the bike, despite going for a ride in the snow last week

Ok thank you 2kwacks.

I will just have to put up with it until I need a new tyre and try and replace the battery myself..

On the link Teacher posted, one of the guys 'joe in calif' (bottom of first page) said.. "Great ideas for when the unit is out of warranty, when my front sensor was replaced the dealer told me the battery had a 5 year warranty on it. So if the 08 battery goes dead it is covered until 2013. I don't plan on replacing any myself for at least 5 years"

Maybe its 1 rule for them and 1 for us.

Hey all, here in Oz at main towns/cities there are some places that (at a price, but low enough!) you can get your tyres filled with nitrogen rather than plain old air. I'm wondering if this, being more inert, might add some life to the TPS's (as tyres warm/cool etc, some moisture will build in the tyre - and this may, if the TPS is not completely sealed, cause issue on contacts and the like). Just a thought!. So far we don't pay for air at the petrol stations, and so for now I've not tried nitrogen, but if it gets to the point where it costs and difference is little, I'd be tempted after I get my tyres replaced to let out all the air and fill them with the good gas.

I'm not sure what the tyre man will say (not the dreaded money-hungry dealer!) if I said, 'hey, by the way, while you have the tyre off do you mind if I just grab that TPS out & whiz home to replace the battery - be back in an hour', while he has a shop full of bikes to do. Solution - get a group of like-minded together & get our own tyre change station between us......

Sooner or later someone will either fit a micro-generator to their TPS, fit a solar cell or 2, or else find some way of beaming power to the TPS.
Batteries is a stupid idea for something like that, even if it is possible to change just the battery.
TPS are a good idea but the companies implementing them seem to think that people will just stump up the stupid amounts of money to keep them working.
I do my own maintenance and will be fitting new batteries myself at the next tyre change. I will also probably be powdercoating the wheels black at the same time as I am sick of cleaning them.

My wheels are minging and been thinking the same thing

O.C.

Debs, why do you think that changing the colour of your wheels will help them stay cleaner

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know...only teasing...... :whistling:

the tyre sensor on the gtr is the "direct system type" and in cars the batterys are designed to last 10 years so kawasaki need to take their chicken :shit: design back to the drawing board  my car uses an indirect system but doesn't actually measure the tire pressure. It uses the wheel speed sensor which is part of the ABS system to measure very minute differences in rotational speed between all four tires. When it senses a difference from what a nominally good tire is, it will turn on the tire pressure light. but you will need to check the tire pressure in all tires, as it doesn't indicate which tire is the problem. Once the tire pressure is adjusted and all tyres are inflated to the correct pressure you reset the system by simple holding the control button in on the dash for more than 3 seconds  it's a simple but very efficient way of monitoring tyre pressure and is maintenance and cost free
