Hi Gus n Gals,
I am off with a couple of friends later this year (August) from Calais to Ramsau, Austria (SE of Salsburg) and we are looking to go via Colditz on route. This is not an area I have any experiences of ans was wondering if any of you could recommend decent lodgings (not too expensive obviously) and perhaps some interesting places to visit for ladies.

We had been thinking about 2/3 days to get to Colditz and once the tour is done head the 400 or so miles south to Ramsau for a week and do the various passes..... followed by a more direct route home following the older roads.

It should be a good trip - my longest on the GTR but I would like to keep the ladies happy too - hence the request. Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

I went to Colditz last April, you can stay in the actual place itself and i recommend you do this, you get breakfast as well, and before you say anything they have heard all the jokes about hanging sheets out of the window etc, oh and do the tour of the prison itself, you learn so much more.

We did it across in two days staying in Dortmund for one night in some cheap and cheerful hotel then took the long way back, actually thinking about it we started off from Ostend actually.

Nice bars and stuff in the town of Colditz, when you get to the car park in the middle of town you can see the castle, i shall let you explore how you actually get to it that's a fun bit, oh and when you come out the large main entrance and wander down turn left to a pub, awesome food and beer.

Used this place twice now.. Within a 15 minute walk of the castle, nice rooms all themed...and reasonable rates

Car park round the back, on a quiet road

Owner speaks English too

Another thought.. Prague is only a half day's ride south.  :scooter:

This is from memory as we could not understand German either, we booked it using www.hihostels.com if my memory is correct, they charge the same as the hostel (that's what it's classed as) and we had confirmation via email.

Ah right, well there were two couples and two guys on our trip and the girls went one way and us four guys went the other, heaps better.

Have fun when you get there, it's one place I intend to go back to.
