had a go today at taking off the fairing  . went very slowly   the only bit i had trouble with was the lug under the headlight  i took the push in screw out  and after much swearing  relised that you had to part the plastics with your finger so the top bit can slide out , give it all a good clean and copper slipped all the bolts and put it back together .  that i found was the hardest bit  was to get the middle section to aline right . did both sides     checked all bits  then found i had 2 big fairing bolts left , all i can think off that they must be hidden behind the fairing  as all the other bolts are in place . are well more pratice taking it of again . its the hardest one i have ever done ..............

The fairing on the pre 2010 bikes are a doddle to take off, but the 2010 + models require a bit more thought. I've only taken mine off once so far and it was a bit faffy.

removed the both sides of the top, middle and bottom fairing panels, screen, e.t.c of mine last month, give it a good clean, replaced the air filter, engine oil and oil filter, lube the throttle cables, greased and lubed the screens mechanism and cables and top the coolant to just under the max mark. coolant was fine at minimum mark, it was on the minimum when I picked it up from new 2 years ago but prefer the level just under the max mark. didn't have any trouble removing or refitting the fairings  but I had removed my zzr1400 fairings panels a few times which use similar fixings. the key is to take your time and when you remove each panel, screw the bolt back into it's fixing so you know where it lives when refitting all the panels  then you know the right size bolt lenth is where it should be
getting on now...  but not as old as Rog or Geoff

i found taking off the middle part the most difficult . without taking off the top or bottom first  in 10 years time  i could see lots off bits of plastics snapping off. also there was lots of rusty bolts and brackets hidden in there.
