"Heat Soak" is basically the metal of the engine being warmed up by the combustion and burning of petrol that gives off heat which is absorbed into the metal of the surround ...... if you then remove that source, ie .. switch off the engine the metal will still be hot and may even increase in temperature for a short time as the metal is "soaked" in heat ... after time it will naturally cool.
Hope that's clear !

Ta Rusty I'm enlightened....every day is a school day ya know

The stock fans are plastic, there are 2 fans of different sizes, a large and a small.
Like Kwikasfuki wrote in an earlier post, aluminium fans are the answers. I installed the 2 Muzzys 6 blade fans and since then no problems, my fans will only come on at 4 bar level, I only hit 5 bars in Malaysia once under extreme heat but that was with the stock fans.

Hi folks,

I just arrived in the s of Fr after about a total of 900km.
The last 60km was in absolutely torrential thunderstorm rain and big hailstones. When I arrived the tickover was up at about 1500, which is normally what it does when i just fire it up from cold. The temp guage was normal 2 or 3 bars, but tickover way too high.  I also noticed a kind of ticking noise from the engine (maybe valves or something) that i haven't noticed before.  It just sounded a bit "rough"

Does anyone have any idea what I should check?

I added to this thread because the OP appeared to have a similar concern.

Thanks folks - excuse crap typing... I hate iPads.....

Cheers

Btw, 2010 model, full service etc. with about 15,500km

Hi Guys
Lets have a bit of common sence on this subject, its a temp gauge and it will go up and down and when the engine is getting to hot the fans will cut in. You should not get a too hot message only if there is a fault.
I have just done a 1200k tour of the south of France and guess what the gauge did go from 2 bars to 4 bars at which the fans cut in.Some days the temp was 37c plus and every thing was as one would exspect it to be.
Stop worrying and just ride it.....

Hi Howard, thanks for your reply.

Maybe I made a mistake by adding to this thread: I searched for high revs using the search form and this thread came up.

Just to be clear, I do not have a problem with the reading of the temp guage.

For some reason, the tickover is now at 1500 to 2000 revs all of a sudden and it is making some unusual ticking sounds coming from what is usually a smooth sounding motor. (noises associated with engine regime)

It may have had something to do with an excessive amount of precipitation going up the air intakes...  I have no idea

I just wondered if anyone had experienced such a phenomenon and if anyone had any idea what I should check before I ride to a dealer and have it checked out.

I would be surprised if the rain which was obviously extreme, has found its way into the intakes.

I would suggest that you back the revs off to a normal 1000 rpm (or thereabouts) and keep an eye on things

Make sure you check oil levels too

Hey Olde Coney,

This morning, after a cold start, it seems to be behaving itself again.  After playing with the tickover yesterday, it was idling too slowly so I corrected it again.  I let it warm up until the fans kicked in and nothing untoward happened... Stopped and started a few times to make sure and it seems to be ok.

I'll tear up and down the road in a minute and make sure...

Doesn't seem to be owt serious...

Was a bit concerned for a while!!!!

- yes , definitely a go back to basics.

- perhaps check oil + coolant levels , give the bike a good clean and check battery connections.

Sounds like it may have sorted itself out

Just cranked,on another thousand or so kilometers and absolutley brilliant. I love this bike.

If I could get it into the lift of the hotel i'd snuggle up to 'er tonight.

Mined ewe... The wife would probably have something to say about that...

Problem self fixed. So I'll just press on as if nothing happened!  Looks like mine just doesn't like shitty weather.  Can't blame it, I don't either.
