Just been reading this blog and quite like the idea of a cheap inexpensive GPS tracker. Not rocket science to wire either.

Aye, its a fairly cheap and inexpensive GPS tracker. You can also get the additional wired charger for 6 quid.

Think I'll order one ...

EDIT: Ordered ~£42 including wired charger

I actually worked on the design of one of the first of these.
I worked for a company called ISG Tracer back in the mid 90s.
That was back in the days of early GSM and huge hockey-puck GPS antennas.
Our unit cost almost £2000 each.

Even with something that small, you need to be aware of 2 things.

1- It needs to be well hidden.
2- The box needs to be able to "see" the sky or it won't get GPS lockup.

You can put it under plastic but not under metal.
Should work from under the saddle but would be best inside the front fairing as if someone was sat on it there is a chance it won't get lockup.
If the thief chucks your unit in a van then it won't get GPS and will just keep reporting it's last position.

The really clever units now combine GPS and GSM-triangulation to verify the positioning, but they cost more.
Most of these also feature Geo-fencing and other such features.

So, worth the dosh on a Norbert semi but perhaps not for a bike where it would also be very problematic.

Of course you could just use one whilst riding thereby giving the wife (PC and software) access to where you are when touring solo (or with other that SWMBO)   :help:
Just because many do it does not make it right. Just because many think it does not make it true.

Hell no. You can get tracking software for your mobile already.

I'm just doing this as its a cheap solution to keep track of the bike. Appreciate if it gets chucked in a van it ain't going to work. Just another gizmo.

EDIT: However, I've read modern GPS devices are more sensitive. I'll have to try and see. Its been shipped anyway
