A few quick photos of a wee ride out I had today up into Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

I've been intrigued by the program Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, so I thought I'd go to Appleby in Cumbria where there is an annual horse fair to see what the attraction is, apparantly travellers have been descending on the villlage since 1750 so there must be something there which draws them in.

The photos aren't in any particular order apart from the ones I took at Appleby, basically the route was Kirkby Lonsdale, Sedburgh,Drtbeck and then to Appleby.

I like to photograph village churches so here's a few.

The  main destination.....Appleby in Cumbria.

Firstly parking is free which is always good but you have to display a token which you can get from the Tourist Information Office. If it gets nicked or blows away I was assured I wouldn't get ticketed. Thankfully I never had to put that to the test as it was still on the bike when I returned.

Plenty of local produce.

Rusty this is what your flowers should look like.  :whistling:

A shot of one of the few main routes into the villlage, or is it a town? I'm not sure.

All this talk of what does your garage look like, well I found this small workshop in the village, A Norton 850 Commando, haven't seen one of them for donkey's years.

The river where it is customary to wash the horses at the Horse Fair.

Coal still seems in demand in this area.

A couple of nature type shots for the nature loving members amongst us!!  Spot the difference.

Again, another sight you dont see often where I live. Why do these monsters need to be so big? I was speaking to the young lad who was driving it and who commented that its easy to pass your test for one. I can remember driving one when I was 20ish for a couple of years, I didnt know you had to take a seperate test!!   :whistling:

A very satisfied pooch having just had a run and then a swim in the river.

Another shot of the main street. Tourist Info Office on the left.

Evidence that coal fires are still widely used.

I had about an hour in Appleby, (which included a very decent bag of chips) before I set off to Hartside Cafe at Alston.

I passed this interesting sight on route, a boat on stilts in someones rather large garden.

Arrived at Hartside Cafe. Just a small handfull of bikers up there, possibly still too cold for the majority.

And last but not least, my beast.

Two youngish lads turned upon their Kwaks,  :help:   One of which definately needed a bit of TLC!

Just look at that chain & sprocket!!

From Hartside cafe I headed to Hawes to get some cheese. Came across a minor wooly roadblock

Still on route to Hawes I came across this very unusual and unique residential, property. Love it!

I like to try and keep my eye open for unusual landmarks or similar and I must have passed this before but just not noticed it. Very strange, right out in the middle of nowhere!

I have to ask myself why, what's it for, what does it do?

I know what this does, it puts a smile on my face. :mfr_lol:

And these are apparantly very nice with orange, poor little things!!

So there you have it. A brilliant day out, I have to admit I did laugh to myself when I thought of everyone else working while I was out on a 200 mile+ jaunt of this stunning area. However as we say in the trade, oh dear, how sad, never mind! Hope you like the pics. And for all those Southerners on here, this is right on our doorstep.

Some great pics there and it certainly looked like you had a fantastic day out. Loved the look of that house with the tower - I want one!

Bag of chips ..... trip to cafe ...... cheese shop ...... and eyeing up that poor duck ....... wonder what the main purpose of the trip was  :whistling:

Lovely pictures and you obviously had a great day out ....I must go to Appleby again, as I haven't been there for ages

You were lucky with the weather too

I took my bike to Autorama in Batley today for a service. It wasa miserable day, cold and wet. but forecasted to improve this afternoon so the return journey of 120 miles should have been enjoyable, up the A65 past Skipton & Settle

It was bloody freezing 3 c all the way hailstorms, howling bloody wind plus rain until I got to Devilks Bridge at which point I was so damn cold that I just passed by and made my way home for a hot drink

Brrrrrrrrr... I'm still thawing out

Ah yes Mr Wolf it's plain for all to see that it's grim up north. Lovely pictures, and a great day out for you. When I retire later this year I think I will be joining you on some of your mid week adventures in and around the dales. Oh and my good lady thinks that the cone shaped thing with a wall around it is a shelter for sheep.
What would you rather be   or a wasp?
