I bought my  2yr old 4800 mile GTR 2nd hand, the previous owner had just renewed the transferrable extended warranty. When i checked with Colchester Kawasaki about keeping the warranty upto date i was informed i would need to ensure that the mileage/age related services would need to be kept to. So my low mileage but 2 1/2yr old bike now needs the "big" services even though it has not covered the miles to warrant the work(always kept in a warm dry garage so hoses etc will not perish due to climate coditions). I had  a fruitful discussion with the general manager and the service manager and they very fairly agreed to do me an interim service and stamp the book up to date at a very reasonable price, but the point is you have to spend £1000 to £1800 to keep the bike serviced just in case something major goes wrong to need invoking the warranty. I calculated that it was far more cost effective to do all my own servicing (except the shims as i once got this wrong on my 1978 GS550, but it was 30yrs ago and serviced in the street with less knowledge and less facilities) at least I will know its been done and save money into the deal. The money saved can be put toward any unforeseen future problem and i then dont have to fight/plead with a warranty manager who will try to get out of honouring the agreement anyway

I totally agree, if you do lots of miles at these service rates you could quite easily spend more than the value of the bike in 5 or 6 years.
