Just been looking at the new MOT criteria introduced on Jan 1st. Vehicles fitted with HID lights must have headlamp wash/clean facility which must work to pass MOT, What about retro fitted HID on bikes, not seen one yet with headlamp wash, don't BMW fit HID on the 1600?

Is that the MOT criteria for bikes or cars?

Appears to be all vehicles, apparently HID is not efficient if the lens is dirty as the dirt deflects the light, causing dazzle.TBH I don't think they've even considered bikes may have HID.

Boomer

As with most such it only applies to vehicles fitted by the Manufacturer with HID headlamps.
Why this would make a difference I have no idea.
HID is a bulb. It's the reflectors and lenses that determine the light pattern and any headlamp can get dirty.
Now if it related to Projector headlamps then that makes sense as they are bloody awful if you have one coming towards you.
At certain angles looks like they are on high beam.
May be good design for lighting the road ahead but crap for other road users.

It does apply to retro fit, along with accessory wiring and tow bars and tow bar wiring.

Interesting read , also noticed they have no included "Tyre pressure monitoring systems fitted to vehicles first registered after 1 January 2012 must be working correctly and not indicating a malfunction"

With the GTR ones and I think most TPS systems the vehicle needs to travel a distance before they become active - does that mean they take it for a test drive or do they put it on the rolling road?

It'll go on the rolling road to test the brakes so I guess that'll now serve two functions.

Kwikasfuki

I'm not sure if that applies to bikes though? My bike is due for its MOT in March so I guess I'll find out

Hi

As a motorbike is a "vehicle" they will be tested it but only on vehicles registered after 1st Jan 2012

Kind regards

A rolling road capable of testing a motorcycle is a different animal than a rolling road for a car

I wonder how many current MOT stations have a bike rolling road..

I know that they have brake tester rollers, but that's a different item altogether

The legislation only refers to cars. i.e require headlamp washers and self leveling prior to HID conversion,
i have been running HID on bikes for 5 years and I also work in the Legal profession, relax and fit HID to your bikes, no law against bikes conversions at present.
