went to a kawasaki dealer and ask for the gear oil used in the shaft drive for the gtr1400 2010. and he sold me a bottle of rockoil ep80w90 gear oil. after reading the spec on the bottle its states for use for GL4 applications. the service manual for the gtr1400 final gear oil, states 80w90 GL5 is required. so it looks like the main dealer as given me the wrong grade! of course will enquire if this GL4 is ok to use! but the dealer said this is what they use in the garage! dose any one know if the GL4 grade can be used, will of course get the correct grade, but just want to know before I tell the dealer what I think of him. I dont trust dealers! and this just may confirm what I allready think!

If the service manual states GL5 I would use that. Just cause the dealer uses GL4 in their garage doesn't make it right. I was reading my service manual a few days ago about replenishing the gear oil and it made mention that if you dont do it right your rear wheel could seize, that woudl be interesting while you were riding......NOT!!

changing the shaft oil is no problem! but getting the correct grade is! I need to find out if the GL4 grade oil can be used instead of the GL5! of course I would only use what the sevice manual states, but this may just back up! what I have allready said about not being able to trust dealers, but need to find out if the GL4 can be used, before I tell him he a first class muppet! and if this oil would of damaged my bike I would have damaged is head!

dealer said it was gl5 they put in! but did buy a bottle of putolene heavy sae 80/90 gl5 gear oil, and re-done it my self. for the sake of £6.99 for the 1 ltr of oil and 15 mins of my time, result! I know it been done right! this is the problem with dealers. the only way you can be sure the correct spec have been used with engine oil and shaft oil. is to do it your-self!

Cant argue with that. You should be able to trust the dealers to do a proper job, but if they get a chance to cut a few corners they will.

dose anyone know. if the final gear oil drain crush washer on the gtr1400 2010 model is a special fittment of some sought! the reason am asking is because! have just change my shaft oil and engine oil. and bought a new engine sump oil crush washer which was only 40 pence! ok thats reasonable I suppose. but they did not have a final gear oil crush washer in stock, so just used re-used the original washer. just allowed a few more nm of tourqe to make sure it sealed. anyway just courious because as far as I know, the final gear oil drain crush washer dose the same job as the engine oil sump crush washer. and the engine oil sump crush washer is 3 times the size of the gear oil drain crush washer, so why dose the gear oil drain crush washer costs £1.20 than the engine oil drain washer!
engine oil sump crush washer costs 40 pence!
final gear oil drain crush washer costs £1.60!
can only asume the final gear oil crush washer is a special fittment! untill we find out for sure. either re-use the original or make sure you get the correct oem washer!

if its a copper washer and I have no idea why not just heat it up to cherry red then dunk it into cold water? This will make it usable.

Sorry if it's a special one.

I'd personally just re-order a correct one and be safe in the knowledge that it wont leak. I wouldn't want any type of oil dripping out near any of my wheels when I'm riding. But thats just me, over cautious.  ;D

its not a copper washer, its just a soft alloy washer like the engine sump washer but approx 3 times smaller in diamiter, no reason why you can not use a copper washer thou! if it dose not leak after you have tourqe the bolt. can not see a problem using a copper or any type of crush washer thats fits!

Deon

Hi guys,
Need advice please !! My manual states SAE 90 ( GL5 ) gear oil to be used. I want to put in a full synthetic oil. Do you reckon 75W-90 or 75W-140 Oil ?

Hi, I'd just put the right oil in as per the manual. One bottle will proably last well over a year.
