It ain't no job for a novice - especially if they need adjusting.  Precise measurements are critical - to state the obvious.  More than one owner has been sorry to have gone into it.

It certainly won't be a cracked head!   More likely a loose hose/clamp.

Should be easy to find with plastic off.

Don't bother fitting a battery from another bike, just use jumper leads from it or your car.

Here's a pretty wiring diagram for the series 2 bike.

You cannot view this attachment.

The ABS unit is bled/flushed when bleeding at the wheels.

Your description of the problem would seem to indicate to me that there is air in the front circuit.  When the rear brake is applied first it pressurises the front circuit, as you know, using the ABS pump, not the rear m/cyl.  I would suggest that you reverse flush the front circuit from both calipers with a reverse bleeding kit or a moderately larger syringe filled with brake fluid and tubing to attach it to the bleeders.  Ensure the reservoir is virtually empty before you start pumping fluid up.

Please report back.

your assistance is highly appreciated.

Only an external elbow fitting - screw it on to add air then remove it.

Have replaced the TPMS valves in my 2011 with the angled variety suggested above (in blue, lovely). Did'nt touch/alter anything else. No warnings, all works fine. On the dash modes the tyre pressure info page (?) just shows ----

If you disconnect the battery earth lead for a few minues, that -- -- will disappear as I stated in 3 above.

You need to disconnect the battery earth for a few minutes.  This will allow the dash screen to reset and not 'look for' the sensors after they have been removed and the bike is in motion.  Ensure you mark which sensor went in F & R wheels so that they can be reinstalled correctly at some future time if required.

If failing sensor batteries is the problem why not replace them if they are the early type?  Later type can also be done but not so easily.

On your bike it's hidden just behind the foam insulation where the line from the m/cyl attaches.  On the earlier bikes it's exposed.

I recently had the same problem as the OP but it wasn't air in the system.  It was a loose nut - the one that holds the star springs and clutch basket together.    I'd had it off 4 years, 20,000km ago and hadn't fitted a new one like the good book says.     I found the cause after fitting a repair kit to the master & slave cyls and copious amounts of fluid for bleeding.   :whistling:  Lesson learned.

The very same adjuster is fitted to some Honda models - VFR1200X for example, where it's mounted horizontally.  They have the same issue, only more so and Honda were replacing them if seized while under warranty.  They now come with a square section O ring that sits against the knob to keep most of the crud from entering.

I did mine a few years ago.  The PO had tried and failed.  I drilled the hole in the top and used a punch to knock the cylinder down after supporting the knob on the vice jaws.  The lock pin is on the inside of the cyl and needs to be tapped in about 3mm in order to remove the knob.

You can access the fault codes only while they're active, so you need to do the button pressing thing then - not after the warning disappears.

Chapter 17.9 in the FSM details how to retrieve fault codes.

It's been an irregular occurrence on the earlier (series 1) bikes over the last 5-6 years. It happened to mine.  Kaw gave me a new one as they wanted the faulty one to investigate.  The cause has been put down to not changing the fluid every 2 years as per service schedule.  The ZZR1400/ZX14 unit will do the same job.  It is calibrated just very slightly differently due to the slightly lighter weight - hence the different p/number, but only those prior to 2012 without Traction Control.

Due to the low number of failures worldwide, Kaw said they will do nothing about it.
