Title: Sat nav position
Post by: BigAlan on July 02, 2017, 02:15:07 PM
I have had my tomtom powered sat nav fitted using the Kawasaki bracket between the handlebars since I had the bike, but now although I can hear the instructions easy enough I find I keep looking down to check the road (especially when making progress) so has anybody mounted there unit up higher, but not on the handlebars?

I have thought of removing the screen and making some sort of bracket up to fit it just above the dials still, allowing the screen to rise up.

What do you have, or think?

Same problem here
There should be kind of this mount , in our eye field :

Was looking some time for similar one for the gtr, but guess we have to make it ourselves ...

That's it, I think I will have to remove the screen and see what's behind fixing wise.

Is it that bad? I have mine currently on the left bar on a solid plate (because a Ram mount puts it everywhere except where I want it), but I want to put a Sena remote there - and I was going to move the GPS to between the bars.

Well I hav had tha screen off and the black plastic is cover, I can conclude there is nowhere to manufacture some kind of bracket to host the sat nav, I had the screen up and down and it can't be done.

Only thing I can think of is to actually bolt it to the screen just above the dash and allow the cable to go up and down but would the screen hold the weight I ask myself?????

I have the laminar lip on and I also have a spare screen, but do I risk it???

Alan, you may remember that I had mine superbly mounted on a RAM mount with an extension thereby allowing it to be positioned in a multitude of positions,

Oh nearly forgot, I used a handlebar handy mount from ProjektD to attach the RAM mount clamp

Rog, I am old, how DNA you expect me to remember what you had on your bike all those years ago?

It's hard enough remembering to get up in the mornings now I am retired.

I too have the same thoughts. Mine is between the bars and really want it above the clocks
If you get to sort this I'd Ben keen to get it too

I have a ram mount on the left but don't like it.  Really want it sat between above clocks.

call me odd but I like it between the bars, dont find it a problem to glance at it at all.

Would be slightly easier though if I actually got a BT speaker (back) in my helmet, heyho

I was thinking of putting the screen up and then taking the fuse out, therefore making it fixed.
Then using the screen mounts to work off, as I also would like my nav above the dash.

Blimey Rog that looks way to "busy" for my liking.

So this afternoon I have been playing, stupid I know but playing, I got a ram mount thing which has a ball onthe top, mounted it using rubber mounts on the screen, yes I drilled the screen (measure ten times drill once) and mounted the power adaptor onto it, I will post some pics when it's done. So far it looks the business, I need to feed the power wire downwards which looks easy enough.

Mind you, the prof is when I scoot down the road with it working as to if it's any good, but what the heck I have a spare screen so if it's no good it can go back from where it came and the new screen can go on.

I like playing.

mmmmm, drilling the screen for a mounting may be okay, but don't forget that whatever is mounted to that fitting point will rise and fall with the screen, the fitting point may also be weakened as a result,  also the supply cable will need to be fitted in such a way that it allows movement

I was able to use differing length RAM extenders in order to move the Sat Nav device away from direct eyeline and instruments.

It did make things "busy" at first as you pointed out but I soon became used to it, and wasn't distracted

I agree with the above, I will test it and se how it goes tomorrow.

But we have a friend from over the pond who has sent me some images of how he did his and as I have a spare screen if I don't like it then I will then "scrounge" a bit of ally from a mate of mine and carry out his idea (which I dismissed in a second when looking at mine) which now seems feasible.

Again I shall report back tomorrow.

I would've thought that there would be way too much weight on the screen and mechanism after fitting the sat nav. They're not exactly light weight.

I once put it on the screen, but dont do it,  it will shake whole the way.. So you cant read it
It need to be mounted on the dashboard itself . It will be steady there.
Here also, be carefull to check when the screen goes up or down...

Disaster, as beegee stated it wobbled horribly, when your sat in a leather chair in the carpeted garage fixing it to the screen on your lap seems a good idea, don't, never got to the end of the road before I stopped and removed it and the fixing.

But there is another idea, one which our American friends says works, so a call to my old employers workshop and some various bits of ally are on there way to me.

If it works then I shall publish pics.

Let round two commence.

I know a certain bavarian manufacturer does a bar for one of the models that sits above the clocks and beneath the screen I wonder if you could copy and adapt this idea if there is a fixable place and you could use the screen as normal

Just got back from an Isle of Man and Wales tour.

I had the satnav on the bracket between the bars, despite being a little low it was fine for me.
I have a bar handy that is used for the Virb camera.

I think what I try next is to mount a ram ball to the Kawasaki GPS bracket between the bars, then use an extension bar to another Ram Ball mount fitted to the back of the Garmin 590 Cradle.  Whilst still in between the bars, it would be much higher.

Eg:
Kawasaki GPS Bracket - Ball mount <> Extension bar <> ball mount - Cradle

This should raise it at least 6-8 inches off the current mounting point between the bars.

It's a shame that a bike which is made for. Touring has not had a it more thought on where a sat nav would go , on top of the clocks would be the ideal spot ,it would be easy to see and be out of the weather , my ktm1050 has a metal frame around the clocks and a bar above to fit sat nav on ,as the same as most BMW gs ,  :biker3:

The pics might be on my phone and god knows how I get them on here but I will give a good description and if you need pics I may have to send them.
