Title: Stebel horn(s) fitting
Post by: Kylinski on February 04, 2017, 06:16:09 PM
Hi folks

My next job on my "to do" list is fitting the two Stebel horns I removed from my ZZR before p/x it.

Anyone fitted these or similar horns?

The standard horn on these big bikes are pathetic at best!

Well ... I myself didn't fit it as some on here will know too well of my DIY incompetance, but my friendly K dealer did so and it was a Stebel ... the result ? Fantastic. You are right to say that for such a big bike the horn was pathetic

I also fitted the PIAA ones as OC says easy job.
Used the same standard bracket and with the wire that comes with them made the horn link just needed the crimps which I bought for penny's of E-Bay

A wiring diagram below showsthe stebel horns description it's the same for the PIAA.

Silly question. Does the GTR have twin horns? There are no relays then?

No mate a single horn just in front and above  the radiator on a horse shoe shaped bracket that's why it's an easy change holes are in the bracket for the twin horns a single fixing bolt hole use the original wiring to the new horn and make a link to the second horn

Cheers all 👍 Seems much better than finding a mounting spot for Stebels then wiring in relays etc.

Please excuse my idiotic question but  do you need any relays with these or can you just fit extra wires in to the existing horn wiring for these to work ??  (I'm an electrical dunce)

The original horn has a relay but it's "upstream" (closer to the horn fuse/battery) than the connectors that clip onto the horn. So no, you dont need an additional relay for these. You can wire the two together as shown here - in electricians parlance is called "wiring the two in parallel". Each horn will see half the total available circuit current, but if the mechanics of the replacement horn are better than the shitty original, then you end up with a better sound. As others have posted though, it will never be as good as the air horns (which seem like a dog to mount on the GTR and draw even more current - that's why they need a separate relay).

Ordered these today. According to the specs, they're the same db level as Stebels at 115 db.

We'll see.

 :help:

I've fitted my PIAA's this morning. Pressed horn button - Nothing!

Fuse is ok.

Wiring, as far as I can tell to diagram is ok. There is no colours on the wiring diagram, nor is there any + or -  positive/negative on the horn terminals.

The instructions are in Japanese!  :surrender:

The only thing I'm thinking of is that I have removed the Y bracket.

I don't have a voltage test meter so can't test anything!

I'm scratching my head here . . .

OK. Sorted now.

I refitted the Y bracket. Must have been acting as an earth.

Nice sound

I agree nice sound.
the only thing I added to mine was a piece of sticky backed waterproof foam between the horns as they are quite close only thinking about vibration
