Title: GTR Owners meeting 2017
Post by: O.C. on June 23, 2016, 06:46:25 PM
THE NEW DATE IS NOW 14TH  AND 15TH JULY 2017.

So adjust your plans/diaries and change you sock drawer sorting or hair washing regimes accordingly  (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/Smileys/default/mfr_lol.gif)

We are staying at this venue, which is easily accessible  from  the A1

http://castlearmsinn.uk/ (http://castlearmsinn.uk/)

Rooms are as follows

There are 9 rooms in total of which 6 are doubles, two are twins and one room (6)  can be arranged as either double or twin

Four of the rooms including room 6 are designated as superior rooms and as such they offer King size or super King size beds

There are also a couple of over spill properties in the village which are a very short walk away from the main hotel and they provide an additional four rooms, they are located in high standard properties where guests would take their breakfast if desired, the rates for these rooms is the same as the standard rooms in the hotel and bookable and payable through the hotel.

All hotel prices quoted include a full breakfast as follows......

Double rooms 160 -180 per room for two nights
Twin room (shared) 130 - 160 per room for two nights

You are responsible for your own bookings, so first come will be first served....... When booking quote "Kawasaki GTR meeting"

An extra 'laundry charge' will be applied if you only stay one night.

Gill and I sampled the hospitality of the Castle last night and the food drink is very very good.

The Castle hotel is situated in a truly stunning part of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales where biking roads are a well known joy to behold, there are some beautiful towns to visit on a ride out and lots of other attractions to see and visit....see the links below for some ideas

The date for our meeting looks like it may have to change to the following weekend, 16th & 17th June

The reason is that I am struggling, even at this relatively early stage, to find a suitable and affordable venue/accommodation, by suitable I mean offering the type of facility that we need and expect. by affordable I mean not paying upwards of £90.00 per head per night. (Holiday areas do have a higher tariff)   :hammer:

By moving to the following weekend I can secure a suitable and acceptable venue at a reasonable price.

I will be visiting this venue this weekend, I hope that it will be ok, it does come recommended by one of our members (iamkwackers) who has stayed there several times before so I'm confident that it will be ok, and I have spoken with Syd about it, I have also spoken to the owner.

So, leave it with me and if you don't mind please keep your diary dates open until I can confirm arrangements  thanks very mucho

Oh and he changes his bike every week and the GTR is about the only thing he hadn't tried. Wonder what he will come to the meet on  :mfr_lol:  K1600???

We do indeed have history, and yes your GTR ( and back and neck problems) convinced me to ditch the ZZR.   Do not think it will be a K1600, have been there and done that with most of the BMW's   ....  The GTR is fitting the bill nicely thank you, and I may surprise you come the meet  :mfr_lol:

It's still some time to go before the 2017 rally, but I'm bumping this thread so that new members are made aware of our meeting and also to 'nudge' other members who haven't yet decided if they will be attending.

If you are intending to participate then can I  respectfully suggest that you book your room a.s.a.p

To repeat ~ rooms are limited so sharing is an obvious option where possible .

New members........you should read this thread from the beginning so that you are up to speed with the meeting plans.

I'm looking at producing some possible suggested ride out routes or alternatively you are quite welcome to do your own thing.

I can't promise perfect weather for the meeting , but, if its anything like it has been here today it will be stunning,  it was actually really hot riding the beautiful roads of North Yorkshire  today.

I will try to handle any questions you may  so just let me know

Absolutely right and good shout, thank you

I had considered suggesting a couple of routes as ride outs, but didn't want to pressurise anyone, so I'll more than likely leave individuals to do there own thing

There are lots of great places to visit which are all easily identifiable from any good tourist guide

Ride to Pateley Bridge via masham over the tops ( pot bank ) then onto all the back roads through Harrogate / weatherby / Boston Spa / tadcaster, some brilliant roads and scenery then onto squires for a good cuppa and chin wag.

We are aiming to come up Saturday Mid Morning ( 95 miles ) if all goes well.

well guys, after organising a venue and promoting the same I'm afraid that its looking extremely unlikely that I will be attending the gathering.

However those of you who have made accomodation arrangements will be ok, the venue is excellent and you will enjoy the wonderful scenery on your ride outs

As a few of you know we have moved house and now live in Northern Ireland,  the move has only just taken place so there is a mountain of things yet to do, consequently my priorities are elsewhere.

If there is any chance of me attending then I will do all that I can to be there,

All you need to do is confirm your bookings, turn up and have a bloody good time.

Reports and pictures will be expected

Thank you, we are just about unpacked after a frantic week or so, and life here is already proving to be more relaxed, it is a beautiful country with the added bonus of great biking roads

We both know N.I very well and a move here has been on our wish list for some time.

Hi Guys, due to a change in circumstances, both Moayling and myself will not be able to make the GTR meet. We did have a shared twin room booked, so if anyone wants to go this room will now be available.......sorry that we will not see you OC and I hope your move to NI continues to be happy and fulfilling, all the very best to you for the future.

I have just spoken with Lisa at the Venue, and she confirms that there are bookings and that there may be one room still available

Can I respectfully ask that if you have booked and no longer intend to attend that you immediately inform the hotel of your change of plans.

I will not be able to attend as there is just too much to do here at the moment.

I know that you will enjoy the hotel and that you will have a great time

Reports and pictures are of course required

I was planning everything meticulously for this coming weekend and then some doubt started to creep in, is it this weekend or is it in July. Having checked with the organiser, OC I now know it is July when currently I cannot go due to my shifts.  The meet was originally booked for this weekend.
If I can't work my magic and blag some time off work in July this will be the first gathering I haven't been able to attend in about five years....and if that's the case that will be proper  :shit:

Its a fair trek up from the Sunny Sussex coast so I have built in a breakfast stop in Central London with my old team who are on shift that day .... then a little trip to Kings Lynn to see an ex team mate then into York to the BM dealer .. just for free coffee etc and then onto the venue at The Castle Arms Inn !
I have a room booked of course and breakfast is included
I can book in from 3pm onwards and hope to be there late afternoon ... I shall get one of those children badges made up with "RUSTY" on it !!!!

I purposely didn't sort/suggest any routes as there are so many places that you can ride to and visit over the weekend, in my opinion (having lived in and ridden the area) it's far better that you make your own decisions about where to go and what to see, I don't like the idea of dictating where to go and what to do ..BUT here's a list of locations that are worth visiting and will all provide a good and enjoyable ride out

Masham - (Black sheep brewery centre) this town is close by and has cafe's in the Square,

Devils Bridge - Kirkby Lonsdale (ever popular bikers meet & gateway to the dry Lake District) good grub and lots of bike chat with hundreds of others you will use the A684 and then the stunning (on a good day) B 6255 to Ingleton

Richmond to Barnard Castle and then Middleton-in-Teesdale via the B6277 will provide enjoyable riding and good cafes , then on to Hartside Top near Alston over the B6277 with a spectacular descent (be careful) to Penrith on the A686

Try Leyburn which is very nearby then ride on towards  Hawes on the A684 but turn left onto the B6160 towards Kettlewell/Grassington and Pateley Bridge which is lovely and has a great olde worlde sweet shoppe on the main street

Maybe ride to Settle to wander around and visit the cafe's (the Naked Man cafe is popular) clothes required  :mfr_lol:

There are lots of places you can visit and having provided this info, which is by no means complete, I now feel even more hacked off that I cannot be there

have a really great time, enjoy, ride safe and report back with some pictures/video please   :biker3:

I know Rusty is planning on coming up from Worthing, thats a fair trip by anyones standards. Oh
I think with Charley working that may leave myself and Bristol Bob and one other ... more
With no offence to anyone here but I am coming up from the Sussex coast and for a 3 man meet up I simply don't think its worth the effort, plus I only have until Tuesday to cancel my booked room for free.
Perhaps next year when, as Steve says we can get a group from this great forum that is truly representative of all the threads and members.
So as they say in The Dragons Den ... "I,m out"
I am sorry if my decision is the final nail in the coffin that puts an end to the meet but I just can't justify the expense and time in these circumstances.

I hope that you have a great time Charlie & Darren, and anyone else who still plans to attend, I hope that your enjoyment hasn't been spoiled by others, Charlie, we will no doubt speak before the weekend.

I'm angry about the negative attitude demonstrated by some members who ought to set a better example - you know who you are and I hope that you are pleased with yourselves

I have done my best to provide decent accommodation for our group, which wasn't easy, in a location which is stunning and at a price, which although a little pricey, was the best I could obtain in the circumstances.

I'm extremely upset that I cannot be there but my house move has completely eliminated any chance of that happening this year. Obviously if any member decides not to go or cannot attend then that is understandable, but I cannot accept that there seems to be an attitude of "if I can't go, then no-one else should"    :gun_bandana:

For those who seem determined to spoil this years event for other members, I have a clear message - "You can organise next years event" I won't be supporting you though  :censored:

If you have booked and cannot attend then please notify the hotel out of courtesy.

Rog, I can see where Wolf is coming from with his view on viability. With any group activity there comes a tipping point when the original idea simply doesn't work if there are insufficient people to provide the different mix of personalities and background interests that these things thrive on. It seems that, in this case, that point might have been reached.

It doesn't mean that the activity cannot still be successful, just that it is different from that originally intended, i.e. a sizeable meeting of a group of like - minded people.

As Steve has travelled to all of the previous annual meets that I have managed to attend (and probably many more) as well as a few others that were unscheduled (Wheels Peterborough for instance in late winter) I don't think that anyone can really question his motivation to support such gatherings.

My own thoughts, for what they are worth, are that pointing out to anyone who still plans to go that it will probably be a very small gathering compared with other years and without the normal range of activities organised, might preserve and just save the event for the future?

Just so we are clear, I am still coming up from Bristol and with me will be my son on his 50cc bike!! He's able to do 50mph and is really looking forward to the ride up (whether that still stands when he gets there after 6 hours in the saddle is another matter). There's nothing staggering about it.

I wasn't able to attend, however those that did attend very much enjoyed themselves which is great news and exactly what was planned.

It's a great shame that more support wasn't forthcoming however the lack of support didn't spoil things for those who did attend.

Title: Re: GTR Owners meeting 2017

Well I'm pleased that those who attended enjoyed themselves, that's what it's all about at the end of the day.

Circumstances dictated that for various individual reasons it wasn't as well attended as previous meets, but that's just representative of the pressures and commitments faced by people these days through work, family life, etc etc.

I don't recall exactly when, possibly four years ago, an intended meet in Devon did have the plug pulled because of much uncertainty as to who could make it, these things happen occasionally.

The small soir'ee planned for The Belfry next month will hopefully give people a further opportunity to catch up with folk who couldn't attend this meet.

I will be compiling a short write up soon with a couple of photos. But, as pointed out by Wolf, I have work commitments and last week a Scout camp that have occupied every moment of my waking life since returning from the epic meet. Patience fellow GTR owners

You make it sound like an 'us and them ' scenario, when in reality we are all part of the same group/forum

Steve, Bob has already stated that he will post a report as soon as he can

You and Pete seem to be hell bent on stirring the pot and for the life of me I can't see what is to be gained from that behaviour     :whistling:

I'm not stirring the pot. Genuinely interested as to who went, hotel ride outs etc.

Roger we're only teasing you and trying to get you to bite which you do each time. It's a bit of banter, chillax, you're so serious with everything  :mfr_lol:

To say that its all banter and a bit of fun is a cop out (pun intended) and just an excuse. The art of teasing and winding people up is to know when to stop Steven, I have already received a totally inaccurate and personally offensive communication via Facebook messenger (which you are aware of), and so it really isn't surprising that I bite when I'm confronted with more of the same...enough is enough.

Knowing when something is no longer funny or appropriate is knowing when to stop, as Global Moderator I would that you expect you are already aware of this.

I have responded openly on the forum rather than by P.M so that others can see where I stand on the matter, I'm not asking for agreement to or support of my position by the way.

I do have a serious side but predominantly an extremely amiable and friendly relaxed style, to which all people who know me will testify, so to say "I'm so serious with everything" is completely inaccurate, additionally you have known me personally for long enough to recognise this fact.

I do not intend to continue this exchange as there is nothing more left to say which is constructive, so, as far as I'm concerned, the matter is now closed.

I now hope that normal service can be resumed, and that this post remains within the thread on the forum !

GTR Owners meeting 2017
Having joined the GTR forum to be able to meet like-minded owners and join up for the occasional ride, it was with some excitement that I signed up to go to the annual meet which this year was to be based at Snape in North Yorkshire. After consulting with SHMBO it was agreed that she and my daughter would go up in her VW T5 van whilst I escorted my son on his 50cc bike!
As the day approached to leave for North Yorkshire, there was plenty of negative talk on the forum regarding the number of attendees this year ie 3 official GTR members and 4 friends and family. Despite this, it was confirmed that we would still make the effort even if there was a limited turn out. On the morning of Friday 14th July it was necessary for me to be in work for 0500 and I was then able to escape the clutches of my employers at 1200. I arrived home for lunch before Kieron and I made our way down to the garage to mount our trusty steeds and head off into the wilds of Northern England (ie North of Gloucester). Leaving at 1430, we made steady progress with a couple of stops on the way for fuel for us and then for the bikes. Our 3rd and last stop was at Doncaster where we met up with my wife and daughter. It was from here that my daughter Robyn donned her helmet (and other suitable attire) and joined me for the final leg of our 270 mile trip.

We arrived at the Castle Arms on the stroke of mid-night and were kindly flagged down and directed in by a kind fellow. We parked up the bikes and were greeted by my wife (who was able to use the Queens highways to their full potential) and by two men (one of which was the fellow that had directed us in). Introductions then followed with the two being Charley Farley and his mate Darren – a nice guy afflicted with the ownership of a BMW whom Charley and I spent almost every moment trying to convince him to come over to the light side (if recent reports are to be a guide then we may have had a little success; time will tell).
Saturday morning arrived with Charley and Darren pacing the pub garden whilst I pulled myself together and got up whilst gently encouraging my children to do like-wise. It was agreed that Kieron would ride with me while Mother and daughter (and pooch) would visit the local area by van. Charley, Darren and I then briefly discussed routes and a plan was put together. Charley then pulled out a bag and from which, he then handed to each of us a coaster that he had made for the occasion along with a tale of how last year he had made side stand plates for all attendees but all thought that they were too good for their intended purpose and would use them as coasters.
Leaving Snape at about 1000, we headed out East with our sights set on Helmsley via A170. At Helmsley we enjoyed a coffee whilst trying to figure out how 1 man and 2 women were going to arrange themselves on the only bike that was visible!! Our computations were resolved soon with the arrival of presumably a second husband on 2 wheels. Our next target for a smoking break was to take us from Helmsley up the B1257 across the Western side of the North York Moors to Stokesley. This was to be a relatively short stop until we were met by the local old guy chatterbox that used to have this and that when he was a lad etc etc etc. Charley and Darren managed to quickly extradite themselves with the apparent need to go to the loo, leaving Kieron and me to try to bring our conversation to close before darkness fell!!

Photo 2: Darrens bike being shaparoned by the GTRs to protect from insults from outsiders!!

Our last stop before heading back to Snape was to be at Leyburn where Kieron and I picked up a drink and had a short wander round. Fortunately we were not accosted by Leyburns village old boy!
Upon our return to the Castle Arms we were met by the very nearly departing Kwikasfuki, who upon seeing us, quickly turned his bike around and joined us in the pub where he had been waiting for a considerable time.

The evening was spent over a lovely evening meal (thank you), with chat and drink. With Asif having to depart to make his way home we then settled for the night to prepare for the journey home.

Nice report Bob.

You obviously would'nt have been accosted by Leyburn's village old boy because he has moved to Northern Ireland   :clap

Brilliant and full marks to Kieran for making the journey on a 50cc bike     ......he should become an honorary member as I believe that it took about 11 hours (some of our members complain after 2 or 3 hours in the saddle on much more capable bikes) thank you also for posting your report as I know that you have been busy, its a great and interesting report

I'm glad you enjoyed the meeting despite the low level of support, it really is a beautiful part of the world with superb biking roads.

Ha ha MO,  :mfr_lol:    you are sort of right as this old boy has recently moved  to Northern Ireland, which is why it wasn't possible for me to attend, there is, however, an even older old boy still residing in Leyburn, who does 'lurk' this forum and he is still capable of riding out drinking tea eating bacon butties and the occasional slice of cake

Thanks again for your report and well done Kieran I salute you sir

Perhaps he meant the other one?

Many thanks for updating the thread and sharing the account with us. I don't think I would have had the enthusiasm to do the journey your Son managed on a 'small' engined bike. Fair play to him.

Did it bring back fond memories Tony? I am looking to be there most of the Saturday (maybe a bit of Friday evening). Sunday morning I will be running the Severn Bridge half marathon - not too far away but on 2 feet as aposed to 2 wheels.
