Title: Insurance Time Again
Post by: Lonewolf on May 31, 2011, 02:35:03 PM
My insurance renewal notice came through from Bennetts this morning, approximately two weeks before its due. Opened it up with some trepidation and saw that it had actually increased by £80+ despite the fact that I had an extra years no claims and hadn't obviously made a claim! What the hell is that all about?

A few phone calls later accompanied by a bit of browsing on comparison web sites and my blood pressure is slowly returning to an acceptable level.  ;D

I always play one company off against another and managed to get Bennetts to significantly reduce their quote but I haven't signed on the dotted line yet.

The cheapest quote I had on line was £140, fully comp etc but with a £1000 excess. What do you do, do you go for the cheap quote and crippling excess or do you go for a mid range excess, £600ish and a higher premium? Decisions, decisions,

All advice greatly received....

I believe I saw on one of the news sites that insurance premiums have generally gone up by around 30% ish mark

My insurance is due for renewal on Monday so I am going to start hunting around for the best possible deal over the next few days to see what deal I can get.

Kind regards

Steven

Insurance has gone up completely across the board for bikes and cars I appreciate that but please, please, please  dont pass it onto me!! So many claims being processed these days, many of them fraudulent it affects us all.  >:(

Andy, the link to that site, is that just for riders with advanced qualifications?

I've also noticed policy excess shooting up. Too many claims companies, the law really needs to stamp down.

Try H&R Insurance, I got a significantly lower quote than anywhere else.

Andy, I've just tried your recomendation, very, very helpful people, They were quoting me £2 dearer than Bennetts but with a much lower excess. The chap I spoke with, (and this is where customer service varies) is going to have a look at some quotes again in the morning, because its a bit late in the day now and try and get me a better deal and call me back.

Thats impressive, but I'll be even more impressed if he does get me a cheaper quote.  ;D

I'm with Footman James, have been for two years they offer a lot of extras in the quote so stuck with them this time round but will look at moving next time around if they are not competitive enough  8)

Hello Lonewolf,

I use Bennets on some of my bikes, but have just switched to Carol Nash, who was £100/s cheaper.

Some of the reason why insurance has increased across the board, is that our lovely co Goverment have added a stealth tax of 10% on all premiums.

So the insurance companies add a little extra for themselves!!!

Hope this helps,

Cheers B/F

We've all had our advanced permits revoked as of last week. Would I still be eligible to join?

Well I started the merry go round of searching for insurance quotes this morning  ???

So far the cheapest quote via Go Compare for Social Domestic & Pleasure is Motorcycle Direct @ £169 but that excludes Legal Assistance, Helmet/leathers, Personal accident and breakdown recovery. If I include all of those then Motorcycle Direct Diamond offers the best deal so far @ £253 with a £250 voluntary access with £500 mandatory excess.

I am waiting for a call back from IAM Surety and Adelaide. H&R insurance were more expensive than Motorcycle Direct. The Kawasaki Insurance web site isn't working this morning and interestingly the Aviva web site doesn't recognise the bikes registration  ??? ???

So far the quotes are better then e-bike renewal of over £400 - so after 5 years with them they obviously no longer want my business.

Kind regards

Steven

I've managed to get Bennetts down from £383.86 + approx £20, for NCB protection, total £403.86  to £337.82 for everything thrown in. Legal Expenses, NCB protection, fully comp, 90 days Euto cover etc.

I guess thats some sort of result.  ::)
I still haven't committed though, I like to keep my options open.  ;D

I had the same issues on a couple of internet sites; they either didn't recognise the registration, or insisted that the bike was a ZZR 1400. The registration was recognised on other sites OK though.

I've moved from Direct to H&R, saved over £200 on the renewal quote, maybe a 'new business' discount applied?

Highest quote was over £1000!  :o

I also have had the bike listed as a ZZR1400 and interestingly when I spoke to Aviva they had the bike listed as a Z1000  ??? and they also provided the highest quote which was in excess of £800  :o - thanks but no thanks as they don't like me having a GTR and doing between 10,000 and 12,000 miles a year on Social Domestic and Pleasure riding.

Aviva did recommend Carole Nash which quoted about £253 but I have heard that so many people have had problems with Carole Nash that I probably won't bother.

My insurance is due in July and I think I'll start getting quotes now.

eBike used to be the cheapest for both car and bike for me, but in the last couple of years their premiums have really shot up. Insurance is really starting to be a PITA. If we not getting shafted by the high pump prices, we're getting shafted by insurance.

Carole Nash never gave me the R&G protectors which was on offer if you took a policy out with them. So I won't bother using them again

I ended up with Aquote @ £360 for Fully Comp, £500 excess, 25,000 miles, bike is garaged.

Finally I am sorted.  ;D ;D ;D

Massive thanks to Andy for putting that link up for Adelaide Insurance. The guy I spoke with, Rory did exactly what he said he would and found me a satisfactory quote, He rang me early on this morning and I have now paid out my dosh. Fully Comp, + legal assistance + NCD protection, allowed to ride other bikes, multi bike policy, EU 90 day cover, (should the wife ever allow me to leave Bradford) ;D, and only a £450 excess. All that for £252.29. I'm well chuffed with that.  ;D

I'm convinced I wouldn't have found anything better than that.

Winston, I rang the IAM today and they said that I would be eligible to join, so thats a good result. They said to download a form off their web site and then send in my certificate. Thanks for the advice, I didnt think I'd be able to do that at this stage.

Fully Comp incl commuting - £125.54
£800 excess, other bikes covered, European 90 day cover
AND - They're organising a BBQ/Treasure Hunt/Dealers Stands show this w/e.

Chuffed to bits

Glad you have it sorted  :)

The best quote I have had so far is with Motorcycle Direct which includes Legal Assistance, Helmet/leathers, Personal accident and UK breakdown recovery. A couple of companies have come very close but some companies don't seem to like the 10,000-12,000 SD&P mileage I am doing each year - although I am enjoying every mile of it.

I still have a couple of days to go, so will sort it out over the weekend.

The second worst phone call from a call centre I have ever had was with IAM Surety, the chap was very nice but his microphone was picking up every sound and phone call from within the call centre - which meant I could barely hear a word he was saying but I could hear the quotes his colleagues where giving out.

Got mine insured for 212 fully comp with MCD (includes overseas riding, riding other bikes and breakdown cover). This time they added all my accessories and modifications as well.

I hate the annual ringing-round insurance game :(. All of the bikes I want to insure have been modified which means I can't use the on-line forms and have to call. It takes forever not least because despite me offering a document containing all the bike details they always want me to tell them over the 'phone; they usually give up on this idea after I've read through the first sheet of A4. SWMBO usually deals with most of this type of stuff but of course the insurance people insist they have to talk to me.

I tend to get lazy and stay with the one I'm currently with as it's the easy option but Bike Team, a subsidiary of Equity Red Star, told me this year that they would not insure the Hayabusa now it's been over-bored. The cheapest was Carole Nash @ around £750 who insured me with...yep you've got it, Equity Red Star!

I listened to the forum, did the tel round, and still found for what i require, Carol Nash was streets ahead of everybody. I do believe they pick and choose, age, mileage, no claims %, etc plays a BIG part in the yearly fees.

Bennets would not insure my 3 bikes? they said their brokers were not interested.

Wait until the winter, the will want to know you then.

Just my thoughts.

Just renewed myself Swinton last year renew price £230 had a look on web and got it for £120 through AXA excess £600. Do these insurance companies think I'm not going to use the compare sites? Didn't give Swinton the chance to re quote, if they could reduce the price which I'm sure they can then they were ripping me off in the first place. Always shop around for best deal

:)Hi Guys, I am new to this site picking up my GTR next Tuesday 58reg Black one. Shopping around for insurance was surprised to find it was only £145 fully comp for a group 17 bike with a £250 excess. This is with Bennets, from past experience first year cheap, following year big hike in price. Then time to switch company. As others have said shop around.

Lockers, welcome along to the form and congratulations on the pending purchase of the GTR. You have got a great deal there with Bennets, I was with them but they hiked my renewal quote up to £400+ I think it was from memory. I aint paying that much!
As you have said it was probably a sneaky introductory teaser, how many years no claims discount do you have if you dont mind me asking?

I've just renewed with Adelaide. Just under £20 more than last year and they have confirmed that the business cover does include escort work on non British Cylcing events such as charity cylce events and athletics (full and half marathons etc). They were also happy about my strobe lighting (as long as they are not blue!).

I have just started the process of playing one broker off against the other, 8) I honestly think the insurance companys are pretty much all the same as regards the cover offered but the broker mark ups vary wildly :o . As we all know it does seem like you get a better deal if you change brokers every year as to get your business they do seem to offer tempting quotes in the first year. My best quote so far is from "Bike team" at £226 with 9 years ncb  1 sp30 :'( ::) inc legal cover, but I'm sure I can better that. I'll keep you updated ;D

Hello Lockers ... nice to have you on board old fruit .... I too am with Bennets and have always found them to be very good .... I hunted around earlier this year just to see if I could better them when the Gtr was still in the box and they came back as the best quote by a country mile  ;D
