Title: PUNCTURE REPAIR KITS.
Post by: clarky on June 04, 2015, 07:06:17 PM
Hi Guys, whats the best puncture repair kit for getting you home? Can anyone suggest something thats reasonably easy to use on the roadside?

I've used the standard "Plug and glue" with CO2 charge / refill on 2 occasions, worked a treat for me. :scooter:
I'd like to change to an aerosol stylee repair, the Petronas Durance gets really good reviews, but are these OK to use with the Tyre Pressure Sensors, or will they be damaged beyond repair if any solutions added to tyre?   :undecided:
Expensive fix if so!

I use something similar to this (mine comes with glue, cutting balde etc): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-VAN-TYRE-MOTORBIKE-PUNCTURE-REPAIR-KIT-WITH-10-STRINGS-sale-/161706741307?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a6790e3b

And I carry a portable tyre compressor that works off 12v.

Works fine for me

because of the tps issue I no longer carry a sealant or have slime inside my tyres ! I just carry a plug kit with a 12v mini compressor. if you have never repaired a puncture at the road side  id suggest that when your tyre is next ready to be replaced id have a go at deliberately puncturing it and then trying the plug method with one of the readily available kits . I also carry the correct tools that would enable me to remove either wheel and practised wheel removal when I first got the bike .

What do you use to keep the front end up if you had to remove the wheel ,

The old trick is to put the bike on its centre/mainstand and apply weight to the rear of the bike, thereby raising the front, you often need help to do this though

Good idea. I now know how to do it properly, but the first time was half a job.

With the long sticky sticks, you hook them onto the tool midway, and then push right into the tyre (so only the tool is visible, not the sticky stick). Then you twist and pull out, which brings out the sticky stick doubled up on its self. Then you cut the excess.

I know its a temp fix, but I rode my bike for ages with it in without any issues

I use the glueless Plug n go.

It's simple and very effective.   The trouble with the glue/mushroom kit is if the glue doesn't set properly you can't redo it.  With the glueless one you can.

Also I found that there was only enough glue for one repair.
The glueless kit is about £25 and I think it's worth its weight in rubber.

Any links to glue less kits that anyone can recommend?

I carry one of these in my top box plus a 12v compressor I run of the socket on the dash.
Just make sure the plugs don't dry out they need to be kept lubricated like when new to help fit.
There is a link below to watch a video .
I also carry co2 cartridges instead of the compressor about 4 16g one the bike will need around 3 to inflate

I had it fail to plug once called the AA they put that green slime in and that failed as well then when the Rear tyre was replaced the slime had to be washed of the wheel and TPS sensor with warm soapy water.
Mind you I have attached a picture of the Welsh slate I bought back across the border  :mfr_lol:
A pound coin and tape to show the scale

That turn and go kit, if it works, looks quite good , although I never personally got those c02 cartridges to work properly so I just carry a mini compressor . nice kit

I'm assuming the normal personal roadside assist service will fix a puncture. Does anyone have any negative experiences of this from the AA, RAC, green flag, etc.?

ive no experience of a the AA ect doing a roadside repair , but I cant imagine that they would be trained or even set up for such things, I think they will just recover you to a garage ect

I phoned the AA once from craven arms.
He installed that green slim can't think of the name inflated the tyre got me to go about I mile down the road and back to recheck the pressure but the hole was too big for my plug and the slime to seal.
The AA man  said if it worked it was £7 if it didn't no charge  :mfr_lol:.
I wonder Why all plugs are round in my case ( there is a picture in an earlier post ).
No one to my knowledge makes a square/ oblong plug

As regards the "turn & go"....... i was on a country lane & a piece of fence wire ( like barbed wire about 3mm in diameter) went in my tyre, didnt lose pressure but heard the wire hitting the hugger on my GSX1400. So i stopped, pulled it out (with turn & go in my other hand) & screwed it straight in then rode home 80 miles doing 50 to 70 all the way & tyre never went down even a week later when i had it plugged.

I dont know how good the gas cartridges are, maybe ok in an emergency to get to a petrol station & get more air.

Quoting from the U.S. GTR/ concors site they say 3 16g cartridges will inflate I use a tyre gauge with a button to release air if required so to much is easily resolved.
I haven't used it yet but I carry 4 cartridges or my 12v compressor
