Title: 08 vs 10 model year
Post by: Billabong on February 24, 2015, 08:14:49 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking to change bikes in large part because I now have tinnitus in both ears and want to protect my hearing! So a touring bike with an adjustable screen seems to be the answer, and the GTR1400 is one of the main contenders.

I've done some research but wanted to ask the people that ride them - are the differences between an 08 plate and a 10 plate worth paying an extra £1500 to £2000 for?

Thanks :-)

styling changes
higher screen, heated grips, traction control , different functions on the dash , centre glove box moved to side

loads more stuff I cant remember

yes its worth the extra

Go for the latest models 2010+

I've had both and prefer my 2010.

Thank you - that's 2 votes in favour of the newer model so far then!

I'm testing an 08 plate tomorrow which has Oxford heated grips and a taller screen but at least I'll get a feel for the bike.

Are there major differences with the amount of heat thrown out on the 2 models? The FJR1300 went through the same thing a few years earlier...

I've also had both and agree with Debs that the 2010 + model, if funds allow is the way to go.

As a benchmark I sold my 2011 model in August 2014 with 24k miles on it for £7k. It was mint with full service history and 6 months Kawasaki warranty remaining on it.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

The Wolf - Blimey! The cheapest one I can find within a couple of hundred miles of me with average mileage is £8k. The 08 plate just up the road is £6.5k but guess I need to ride both to find out :-)

The later model improvements sound good though I'm not a fan of linked brakes - I'd rather decide which brake I'm using and how much it's applied...

Fully agree about the linked brakes, I hated them on my 011 GTR.  Tecno overload, that nobody asked for, nor needs.

Billabong, this is what I sold for £7k. I even threw in the top box cos I'm super generous!

It was my pride and joy but not in the same league as my current two wheels.  :whistling:

As for the linked brakes,  I wouldn't
get hung up on them, it's something which in my opinion is something you don't even notice. I'm sure others will disagree but that is as I say just my opinion.

Wow! Looks fantastic - someone got a stunning deal!

Looks like you have a K1600GT now? Along with the GTR1400 other potential bikes on my list are K1300GT, R1200RT, FJR1300 and Trophy 1200. All because of bloody tinnitus  :censored:

a couple of things here.....

if someone posts a non-gtr... non-kawasaki....  do we really have to quote the post (aka picture) an additional number of times and make my eyes bleed in pain?????    :surrender:

anyway - back on topic - had 2008 (20k) 2009 (30k) 2010 (54k) and still have it.

not sure I still like some of the design elements- i.e. mirrors which don't line up with the body work, but otherwise, coming up to 5 years of ownership of the 2010 model.  On the way home from work tonight - pissing rain, but its still sounds great, still fast and you can play with the traction control by spinning up the rear - a little bit -  (don't try this at home kids)...   BUT I still love it....

I would like something Austrian, Orange, 1190 or 1290cc, off road capable, but I'm not a traitor and my loyalty stays with the big K.

Let the good times roll!   :-p

Neil

It's good to see that despite the Cumbrian weather you have managed to retain your sense of humour Neil   :mfr_lol:

Bilabong...like Neil I have owned a 2008, 2009, and 2010 model GTRs, the 2009 was not my favourite and prompted a disappointing foray into BMWs (K1300GTEE & R1200GSA) both of which were unsatisfactory for differing reasons. The 2010 was, for me undoubtedly the best, linked brakes and all

I now own a 2014 XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere....You'll have to google a picture as I wouldn't wish to upset Neil any further   :biker3:   :mfr_lol:

BTW I still have a strong allegiance to the Kawasaki product having owned a great many of them over the years

Anyway, back to the original post, I have  a GTR, I've had it for4 yrs and I love it, i am in no hurry to change( although I also like the look of the big Orange Adv types)

BUT
if you have tinnitus it may not be the bike for you. There are numerous posts about buffeting from the many different types, sizes, makes of screen, some including me never resolve it. The best solution is a Schuberth C3(thanks to the Wolf as I would never had paid the full price to try one but am now a disciple) be sure you can live with the airflow before you make an expensive error

Thanks all, some really helpful stuff as well as some good banter!

Funnily enough I've just stumped up for a C3 Pro as it's supposed to be the quietest helmet on the market. Painful expense but I really do want to protect my hearing. Wind noise in general and buffet in particular are what I need to avoid. I still want to ride a bike though so a car is not the answer before some wit suggests it!

I've tested a Trophy 1200 with stock screen and from the lack of buffet/noise side of things it was awesome. Handling was a different matter though... I've also tested a 1200RT with a barn door V-Stream screen which was also awesome noise wise, but I'm not so keen on its engine and gearbox.  Yesterday I tried an 08 GTR1400 with stock screen. The screen didn't come anywhere near high enough for me so I ended up with it in the fully low position for least noise. I was a little cramped on it (I'm 6'2") but I'm sure there are footpeg lowering kits. I also noticed it throwing a fair bit of heat onto my legs - great yesterday but not in summer. The handling was fantastic though for such a big bike and the gearbox was one of the slickest I've ever used. I'm now trying to find a 10 plate with a tall screen to test ride as I can't really buy another bike thinking  a new screen will cure the problem only to find that it doesn't for me...

That just leaves an FJR and K1300GT with tall screen to try.

Having said that, if I could lower the pegs on a GTR and find a screen that works I'd buy one - I thought it was a cracking bike :-)

The heat issue with the pre 2010 models is a common factor. You don't get that issue with the 2010 + bikes, I hope you can test ride a newer model, especially if you find one with an aftermarket taller screen on it. There are foot lowering pegs out there and some on here have fitted them and for them they have worked. They still might not for you, I agree with what you have said though, the engine is super smooth.

Keep us all updated won't you?

On the top of my screen I have the Laminar Lip. It deflects the wind over my head and I also wear the Schuberth C3. Sometimes with ear plugs for extra comfort.

Updated FJR is a nice bike.  Small but wide.  The earlier ones (pre 2012) have terrible suspension.
Yamaha don't supply (or recommend) top box AND panniers.  Cracking engine though - phenomenal!

K13 has as high if not higher pegs than the GTR.  Great handling and another great engine.

The GTR is an awesome piece of kit though and I think I would have it over the FJR - would toss a coin between K13 and GTR though!

FWIW, I have terrible tennitus, too.  I never ride without ear plugs.  My 08 has a VStream screen and a Laminar lip, too.  I can go from full breeze to no breeze with the set up.  I've found that riding with the screen combo lust below my line of sight gives me no noise and no buffeting.   I added the foam inserts I found on the US brother sight and it knocked out at least 75% of the"heat on legs" problem.

The only item on the Gen 2 bikes I would kike, would be the ECO mode, as we have lots of long super slab roads in TX, and the improved MPG would be nice on those trips.

As far as BMW's go, I've had four and still have an 1150RT.  It's a great bike, more sedate, but more nimble than the Kawi.  Almost bought a K1200RS a while back, but it was so smooth, quiet, and gave NO sense of speed, I knew I would either lose my license or my life on it, so I passed.

Thanks tomp. I always wear ear plugs too - I paid for some moulded ones at last year's bike show in London.

How tall are you? That's two votes for the laminar lip now - sounds good!

What are the foam inserts you're referring to? Not heard of them...

One of the issues I've noticed with sitting in the quiet behind a big screen is you lose some cues for speed.  I didn't find it so much of a problem on the RT I tested but on the Trophy I found myself barrelling along a couple of times :innocent: Just needs a bit of getting used to I guess...

Here's the link I used for the inserts, but seems they are no longer available.  May see if others are making them, on ebay or amazon, or make your own with 1+" dense foam, should you get an 08-09.  I've used laminar lips on all my bikes for years now.  They have always helped with wind noise and air flow.   I know you will enjoy which ever Gen you get.  My Harley never gets ridden anymore, and it's still being paid for every month.  tp

Interesting. What didn't you like about the BMWs?

It's quite a long story really and has been 'aired' on here before, so to save me boring everyone I'll condense the issues.

K 1300 GT EE
Poor finish
notchy gearbox,
electrical issues resulting in the bike cutting out and falling over !
Resulting damage claimed to be unheard of by BMW despite a recall for the same issue

Plus points
Comfy
Stonking engine

The GT was eventually swapped for another BMW as no other franchised dealers wanted it

R 1200 GS (A) pre W.C

Too agricultural..plus other issues, which led me to testing a lovely Green GTR again and from there on in it was a 'no brainer'

Can't say that about any of the Kwaks I've owned.  None of them leaked.  None of them used oil.  Owned one Honda and it had the same track record.

Has anyone that's ridden a pre 2010 and a 2010 on bike noticed a bit more leg room on the later model? I know it's only a guide but according to the motorcycle ergonomics site it looks like the later bikes are slightly better in this respect, with slightly less knee bend? Having tested an 08 I'm going to try a 10 but just thought I'd tap in to the wealth of experience on here! Thanks all

Pretty normal for some BMW's, especially Boxers, to consume oil until completely broken in, 20-30K miles, the distance needed to fully seat the rings to the insanely hard cylinder material.   My 04RT has 33K miles and no longer consumes like it did early on in its life.
Virtually no oil needed between changes for my Harley, C14, or Ninja 650R twin.   :punk:

That's the site I was (vaguely!) referring to. It's really useful though I'm not sure how accurate it is, hence the question. The only real way to find out of course is to ride a 10 plate GTR - yeehah!

Debs, that 2010 model in the video you posted is an absolute beauty  :biker3: being a short arse 5'7" in my boots the GTR was just too high and heavy for me even though I have no problem with my zzr14, I ended up buying a Moto Guzzi Norge which is fabulous but no GTR which I longed for.

I'd gladly trade in/swap my MG for that

They also make parts and I asked them if they could make me some wishbones to raise baby, but the cost of them wouldn't have been worth an extra inch or 2..

They have a very good reputation in the area.

OK here we go Bill... I have been to look at the bike today and it's really nice even though it is a CAT D. That was because of the cosmetic damage due to the previous owner dropping it at very low speed.. . I have taken quite a few pics for you but you do really need to come and see it.. I would have it if I was looking for one.

Slightly ripped seat on the nearside front.

As it's a Cat D, if and when you ever want to sell, nobody will touch it. It's older than mine was when I sold it, the mileage is much higher than mine was and it has well over a grands worth of damage to put right. Mine went for £7k.

If the dealer fully repaired it and sold it for £6k that would make the deal a tad sweeter but personally I'd never buy a Cat D, or anything else which had been thrown down the road. My opinion only though for what it's worth, oh and while I've got your attention Debs, congratulations on passing the IAM.

Whether to buy a Cat D bike or not is an interesting one. I'll have to give that some thought and also check with my insurance company as I've been told they may well bump the premium...  :censored:

I think it's still worth a look though so I may well drive down there tomorrow and go for a test ride in the sunshine

Well I had a very pleasant ride following Débs round today - thanks Débs  Nice to see a brace of GTRs out and about too

The ride confirmed that the stock screen on the 2010 model is still way too short for me. I did notice it flexing quite significantly at its highest position at around 70mph - is it a case of "They all do that sir!" or is it just this one...???

They all flex a bit, the aftermarket screens are generally thicker and therefore less flexible.

Have a look in The Market section on here, there is a 2009 GTR for sale, less mileage than the one you've just looked at, and I don't believe it has been dropped like the other one, oh and it's cheaper.

Having ridden an 08 and a 10 now I definitely prefer the 10 onwards model. There are a couple of 10 plate bikes around with much lower mileages but they cost around £1700 (ie nearly 30%) more and they don't have the rorty exhaust

If they were £7000 (like yours was Wolf) then it'd be a different matter. Decisions, decisions...

It's a shame you weren't on here last August when I sold mine.  :whistling:

Do most GTR owners fit engine bars or bungs? R&G do bars and bungs, both around £160 which seems reasonable...

Charlie has both!!  :whistling:

I think the engine bars look better than the bungs and they are functional as you can attach accessories to them.

I agree. Think I'll start this as a new thread (which I should have done in the first place!)...

Before committing yet more cash for yet another bike without knowing if I can truly find peace and quiet for my tinnitus riddled hearing I tested an FJR1300 today. Really smooth (smoother than the GTRs I've tested) but it felt really small compared to the GTR, which is odd for a bike weighing 300kg. Anyhow I felt more comfortable on the GTR so just got to find the right one for me now...

Considering the bike has been around for a while, how have they managed to make such a hash of the sidestand? It's probably the most difficult one to kick down I've ever experienced - not good for a heavy bike

Do you remember that a few minutes later you punched the living daylights out of your seat as it wouldn't fit right?  :whistling:

Early C14, GTR seats really sucked.  My 08 seat eats into my inner thighs after 50+ miles..  Always moving around to get comfortable.  Only complaint I have with the bike.  Bikes built in the 60's and 70's had much better/more comfortable seats than any OEM seat today; at least for me, and I've owned 60 bikes and God knows how many different seats since 1970.  tp
