I am thinking of fitting a fitted camera to baby... I have already bought a small DVR but I am undecided which camera to buy and where to mount it..
So far I am considering this on and mounting it on the cowling. It would have to stay on the bike if I sold or part ex'd it..

Ideas welcome please..
Also if any of you :police: can tell me where the Police mount the front camera on their GTR's
I cant help you with the specifics debs but please keep us informed on the instal and eventually footage quality . id also like to do this as fitting and removing the gopro everytime is a bit of a faff.
I just like to have something fitted that records when the engine is running with no input from me, records loop automatically and if I have an incident its all there on my memory card, a bit like a blackbox recorder, fit and forget until you need it

back of the mirror housing is another option
Neat camera, where can I get one?

This what I am doing Viper. THE DVR Recorder that I am fitting records on to an SD Card, does loop recording and can be set to record when power is switched on. ie by ignition..
The other option I have for a camera is this one mounted on the mirror.

I have a spare mirror cover that I can drill a hole in, but to hide the wires they would need to go through the mirror hinge.. Not sure if I would be able to drill a hole big enough for the RCA plugs to fit though... Hmmmmmmmm
its a great idea and it will work, its all about the quality of the recording, I set something up a few years back with a bullet camera into a dvr, the images were awful.
the camera you have shown is 420 lines , cant remember how good that is
ive seen this dvr, I wonder how good it is

Interesting project, but the resolution on the recorder is not great.
Perhaps rather than reinvent the wheel modifying an in car recorder may be the way to go.
This one gets a great write up for the price...

It doesn't need to be great. As long as it picks up other traffic incase of an accident thats all I want. I'm not trying to 'reinvent' the wheel... This is the set up I want.

I have looked into fitting cameras + SD recording on the trike (after nearly getting taken out by a SMIDSY)
Having done a load of reading and looking at the material that these systems record on Youtube some of them are very poor, and will not meet the standards required to be used in a court should the need ever arise. A bare minimum standard to aim for is a car registration number needs to be clearly read.
Richard
Further to Richards comments re quality which is absolutely spot on, an example I can offer is a cyclist who was knocked off their bike by a car, the cyclist had a Go Pro on their helmet and this is the only reason the car driver was traced after they drove off. CPS were very impressed with the quality of the footage which was indisputable.
I'm not saying buy a Go Pro but certainly use the quality of the Go Pro etc as a benchmark for what you should be looking at if your are fitting a camera to support any potential prosecution / Court case if the worst happens.
I got the DVR today.. Need to get a camera to connect to it.. I will just have to see how good it is..
BTW you don't always see the number plate in an accident so will wait and see...
I think the route debs is going down is correct as long as she can get some credible quality, her set will be discreet and automatic. The car dash cams are not waterproof and she has to go through the PITA of setting up dismantling everytime she is off the bike,
Im getting fed up of setting up my gopro everytime , worrying about charging, theft ect ect.
I use my Drift Ghost HD in this way, which automatically comes on with the ignition and switches off when with the ignition. The problem is that whilst the footage is excellent they are quite expensive cameras and therefore might be prone to being stolen.
However, I have considered permanently mounting it to the bike somehow. I wonder it it would fit behind the front light fairing with a custom bracket and a plexiglass window??? Or perhaps under the nose of the bike, providing there is sufficient suspension travel clearance, again with a custom bracket but permanently fitted fixings so it cannot be removed.
I sold my Drift Ghost because of the risk of it being stolen.. If someone saw it mounted and knew how expensive they are, it wouldn't take much to rip it off.
I have emailed GoPro suggesting they should make something similar to what I am trying to achieve.
Several people used to sell this but everyone wants 'Action Cameras'.
http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/minidvr-hd-bullet-camera.html
You may find one on eBay or direct from China.
I too have a Drift Ghost HD because of it's excellent picture and external mic input (commentating on the bike I'm following). As you say, no real way to hide it away, so I only have it on the bike when dilming something specific.
Quote from: Débs on October 09, 2014, 08:29:42 PMI sold my Drift Ghost... it wouldn't take much to rip it off.
Yeah I saw you listed it... I was considering buying it myself and permanently mounting it by epoxying a bolt into the thread and then bolting it to the bike.
This company does what I want but the price put me off..

police mount there cameras exactly where you pointed too and the recorder is mounted in a pannier! yes it was that big when I saw one last!
Have you completed your IAM or RoSPA course yet Debs and got a F1RST or Gold?
I know, I know - but for £140 it transfers to ANY bike you ride, without drilling holes or having to turn something on! ;-) (oh err missus, this is a clean forum - please behave!)
Neil
For the cost/inconvenience etc for a 'might happen' I agree with Neil.
Protect yourself and avoid any 'situations' with RoSPA or IAM training.
What about rear end shunts or side swipes? Do the training and keep a skill for life

I don't intend changing the bike for a long time, so fitting it permanently don't bother me.. I will leave it on the bike if I do sell it.
Still doing IAM Neil. Off out again tomorrow. Looks like it may pi$$ down..

whey cool Debs, so you went with the mirror location in the end, was the wire route over the mount and down through the fairing a pain?

Yes it is waterproof. It's not a brilliant res but ok for what I want, so don't expect too much.
The DVR was £35 and the camera was £13. You can get better but of course it will cost you far more.

It's self stick but you do need to use a hair dryer to soften it so you can wrap it round corners and curves. I did use alcohol cleaner on the covers first to make sure they were clean..

Why should I need to do RoSPA once I have IAM? I'm not one for collecting "Badges"
Nothing to do with 'badge collecting'
You never stop learning, only a fool thinks that, and you may learn something new or different from another training provider - same goes the other way from RoSPA to IAM.
I am a member of both, for both cars and bikes in addition to Police Class 1 in both, and I am still learning, even from riders with 'less' credentials.
Personally I believe the RoSPA accreditation is more valued due to it's direct, not bastardized, use of the police system (RoadCraft) and tri-annual re-test to keep you on your game as well as the graded test system - Bronze/Silver/Gold.
I know IAM are starting to emulate aspects of this, but RoSPA is more established in this respect.
Both are worth doing and anything that improves your personal safety and awareness has got to be worth a punt.

Alan
That would be nice Alan :whistling:
your camera is rated at 420 lines, if you could improve on this then your images would be better. I think you will need to be able to read number plates and see a situation developing in the distance to give the footage any credibility for an insurance investigation.
Debs, I've just watched the video clip and I thought it was going to be worse than it actually was based on what you said....to be honest, I think that's more than good enough for the purpose you intended. If someone fails to stop after an RTC then no, without additional witnesses who may have taken a reg number you would struggle to identify the culprit responsible but those circumstances are the minority.
Your video quality would be more than adequate to support your version of events as to what caused the collision so I reckon you've achieved what you intended.

First of all new to site so saying hello
I would be interested to know how your camera etc is going for you.
As a motorcycle instructor I was considering a camera to record pupils so they can relate to mistakes made during a ride.
Thanks

It's good for what I need. If you watch the youtube clip it may not be brilliant for showing where pupils can improve.
If that's all you want a camera for I would go for the Drift Ghost HD or a GoPro. If you want one fitted to the bike permanently then I suggest this one.
