This has been posted over on UKGSer.... seems to explain things

I like the sound of that.
I guess everyone will be buying on the 1st of the month in future.
Thats good news really,,,,,it now frees a printing machine up to print more £20 notes.... :whistling:
no more big ugly tax disc holder bolted to my front fender anymore!
I'm going to tax my MSX125 by direct debit, just to annoy them....
Direct debit for £1.42 per month! :-p

Respect!
I'd guess it will be like the difference between 6 and 12 months tax... the longer you take the more you pay :asshole:
"When selling a vehicle to a new vehicle keeper, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferable. Vehicle tax will end when a vehicle is sold and the new keeper will need to get the vehicle taxed immediately before the vehicle can be used."
So what happens with refunds then ?
As far as I can see, you claim whole months the same as now.
So the seller will want to sell by the last day of the month, the buyer will want to buy on the first day of the month.
Unless it is SORN'd by the seller, and the deal is done on the 1st of the month with the buyer taxing it right away.
I like this. As already said, no ugly tax disc holder. I already do it online anyway so it wasn't exactly a problem, although I always forgot to actually put the tax disc in the holder when it arrived. This will mean I no longer need to worry about forgeting to do it.
I wonder if there'll still be a discount on getting 12 months worth?
Will this affect the plod at all? Stopping cars with out of date tax and finding a multitude of other stuff. I guess it'll come up on ANPR will it? And the DLVA database will catch anyone else that hasn't declared their vehicle SORN if they do not renew their tax?
Sounds like an overall improvement to me.
And DVLA will now be able to sell on (in mass) your bank details! Bargain :death:
We can still display the disc holder with a poppy inside instead?
PC Pete :agree: :agree:
Fab idea mate
Kenny :devil2: :devil2:
I would imagine it will go on ANPR however the downside of this is that if every single piece of intel on ANPR was passed over the radio and expected to be acted on you'd probably need a separate Police Service just for that alone, I think we get over 10000 hits on ANPR a month for one thing or another. Only the most serious intel links ever get passed to us and the rest just get ignored.
Question for the 'in the know' guys :whistling:
Adding to Stephens post, with the ANPR thingy, doesn't that work from the front number plate or is it both or what ? :surrender:

Depends on the ANPR system, some are fixed and tend to get front plates as you approach them and there's the ones fitted in the traffic cars which are in the front and rear windscreens and sometimes even on the roof's of the traffic cars, these will get either front or rear plates. Then there's your mobile ANPR systems which are sometimes set up at the roadside to catch passing
trade, I mean motorists. :whistling:
Well I've no problem with them at all, if caught with no Tax you should have to pay 3 x the amount due, from when it ran out !!! :gun_bandana:
"10,000 hits a month" eh Steve ??? .... I'm really biting my lip here ! :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
:tank: Bloody good idea  RESPECT

It could have been 1000 hits but I'm sure I was once told 10000. Either way the majority get ignored.
What I don't understand is why my bike is more expensive to tax than my car. Surely a bike should be cheaper. Less use, road damage, emissions etc.

its a very good point, there is a movement at the moment to rectify this. Bikes have always been taxed on engine size rather than emissions just like cars used to be. Many bikes would have a zero tax disc if they were taxed the same as cars.
Emissions have never been part of the mot test for bikes so that would be added if the taxation rules were to be changed,
Hmm, yes an interesting point, I'd never considered that before.
I am amazed this has got the go ahead. This new system will rely entirely upon :police: stopping these vehicles and dealing with the driver at that time after ANPR has been activated .... As Steve says 10,000 a day or a week it won't matter. If you can find an officer that's going to stop someone as a result of this then I would be truly amazed. Having said that having stopped a car/ bike it then may become apparent that there is no tax on it which is currently a £100 FPN but a " hit " on ANPR for no tax won't even get put out on the airwaves.

does the continous tax dept still exist, a dvla initiative that automatically fines owners of none taxed vehicles that are not sorned?
You know what Mr Viper I don't know the answer to that question. There have been so many cutbacks in so many departments I don't know what exists on a day to day basis... Anyone else know ?
There are never any cut backs in your department though are there Lord Rusty.
this paperless thing is already in, we picked up our new car today and the dealer had to convince me that no tax disc dsplayed was legal!, they said its been in since last july for new vehicles
If a dealer has told you that then I guess it must be true, cant see them risking pissing a customer off for the sake of simply putting a piece of paper in the windscreen.
We picked up a new works car however only last week, 63 plate, from one of our workshops and that has got a tax disc displayed.

mmmm a bit confused , Ive googled this and when you buy a new car the dealer does not physically put the tax disc in the car like they used to do before you could drive it away. It now gets sent direct from Dvla within 2 weeks, so Ive misunderstood what they have said. I will make sure that i get something off them when i actually collect the car to state that tax is paid.
One good thing I have noticed is that come October we wont have a disc on the bike saying "Kawasaki Bicycle"
