Title: 2013/14 ~ 1200 GS
Post by: O.C. on December 20, 2013, 03:35:32 PM
Can anyone shed any light on these reports ?..

I wasn't aware that there had been this number of recalls

not sure. I will trash my GS tomorrow and report if my gearbox goes to bits !

Let me guess , you don't like Beemers ?

IMHO , back to back , its not looking too good for my GTR at the moment.

Methinks you miss the point - the satisfaction of a good old gloat is the issue here.  :mfr_lol:

No Point missed on my part, the question should be asked on the BMW site, ( no offence intended to OC ) would the BMW owners ask of the GTR Recalls ????, why gloat over something i am not remotely interested in, recalls or not.  :innocent:

First, I wasn't gloating

Second, I was asking a genuine question

Third, I do not dislike BMWs, I've owned a couple myself

Fourth I would have expected a more mature response from members on a forum of an upmarket bike like the GTR

Obviously I was wrong  :hammer:

Maybe a forum member with more ability to respond correctly will come along and let me know if they've heard anything about this situation  :whistling:

I'm emphatic with all parties on this one but..................

I would like to quote.................. :hammer:

"General Discussion
Feel free to talk about anything and everything in this board.

Moderator: The Wolf"

Good to see somebody else is not brainwashed by the press on this site................and for that alone it is worthy of its place within this general area giving a balanced and measured response to all the pro-BMW comments posted on this specific brand and model site.

Hang on a minute. On the home page of this forum there is a section entitled "General discussions". and under this section it says " Feel free to talk about anything and everything". And over a period of of time contributers to this forum have talked about erm, almost anything, including cars, aeroplanes, what they have eaten for their lunch, and all manner of different subjects. So what all of a sudden makes it so wrong for a member to have the audacity to comment on a motorbike topic?. What's going on?.

From what I've seen over on UKGSer  ( where I've been a mod since 2004) there are issues arising with the new WC Gs's ..... problem as always is that the issues become magnified through the lens of a dedicated forum.... It doesn't seem to be stopping those who have bought one enjoying their new wheels

To clarify that..... I bought a 118d for SWMBO in September  and immediately joined the appropriate forum  ( babybmw.net)  seems all the 1 series diesels trash their cam chains eventually , leading to 5k worth of repairs, or so it seemed.... until I delved a bit deeper , and it turns out about 1% suffer from problems....

Steve....if I am to take your post seriously then I can only assume that you have had some sort of mental aberration, as Geoff has already said I posted a serious Motorcycling related question within a General Discussion section where all manner of non motorcycling related topics have been discussed for literally years..are you nuts or something    ( that's another serious question) I suggest that you check the topics recently discussed within the "General Discussion" section, I'll help you
Cars
Aircraft
Push Bikes
Afghanistan
Honda Pan European
Triumph Bonneville
Hypnotism
The list goes on and on

I'm left wondering if the last topic might have had some adverse effect on you, a "moderator"

My initial posting was a serious enquiry about a serious topic which is directly motorcycling related, as I've already stated it was in no way intended to gloat or trivialise the topic, to say I was shocked by the juvenile level of some of the responses would be an understatement.

I would suggest that some members on this forum need a reality check, and whilst doing so to step down from their lofty perches and show some respect for other GTR 1400 Forum users, of which I have been one along with a few others on here, for a good number of years.

I don't profess to know all there is to know about the superb GTR  but I have owned three, and as such have gained some experience of this superb machine, I would have another in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the fact that my health along with a change in my motorcycling activities has denied me that pleasure. Furthermore there are other members of this forum who also enjoy biking with machines from manufacturers of other products, perhaps they too should expect the same level of inane comments.

I have happily made several financial donations to the upkeep and maintenance of this forum, in fact I have regularly promoted the idea of such contributions in the past. Some of you may remember that I actually offered to organise, have produced and to distribute GTR branded T-Shirts  on behalf of this club, an exercise which I might add, almost personally cost me a great deal of money. I also organised along with another past member 'mid life crisis' (graham for those of you who have never heard of him), the Lakes weekend way back in 2008 (I think it was) I consider my contribution to the GTR 'cause' to have been greater than many others on here in the more recent past, some of whome only seem able to make unconstructive posts, which are not to be confused with those of a jovial/banter nature.

My support and loyalty towards of the Kawasaki product goes back much much further, and I still have and ride the 1970s examples which currently reside in my 'Rev Shed' I would ask "how long have some of you been loyal to the Kawasaki product ? "

So to re-emphasise my original question......has anyone heard of the detailed problems/issues with the latest incarnation of BMWs GS, which I acknowledge is a very capable bike, but not one that meets my biking requirements................I'm genuinly interested to know

Steve I look forward to your explanation and/or apology regarding your remarks

This is a great forum, with people that I've met personally!   Let's be nice and not kill it off to the point where nobody wants to post anything.

I have to agree with OC here, it is in the 'general discussion' area, and if this had been a pub conversation, it would be over in about 20 minutes, not the 20 hours it has taken to get this far!

And that can also make a big difference when posting, as people you have met don't take things the wrong way and you can have some harmless banter with them.............all the more reason to have regular meets around the country, even if its just for a cuppa

since some of you guys want to talk about beemers. Lets get it on.

I just broke in my new GS LC today (did about 600 miles , mostly backroads and and some highway).

This GS is a real revelation as far as its handling is concerned. Very planted when leaned over and takes mid corner bumps well. Transitions is so fun with this bike !

Compared my GTR , I cannot tell you how far apart the two bikes are now. The GTR is so lethargic in comparison. The only one point in the GTR's favour is its stonking straight line speed.

so there.

.

and to address the people complaining about the gearbox / clutch / tankslappers / etc : well , the proof is in the pudding. This GS of mine has the best gearbox I have ever tried on a bike. Very very direct , no slack at all.

great great bike.

Just to point out that whenever I post a  :mfr_lol: it's to identify the humour associated with the text. It should also be pointed out that Zeds post had the same  :mfr_lol:at the end of his post. The remarks were therefore meant to be taken in jest - this is an open forum for everyone and everyone's sense of humour as well.

But on a serious note - isn't this site going to be slightly more in support of the Kawasaki than any other marque. Enquiries of other makes here are courting a partisan response which should be taken in good sport.

As I was the one who started this thread it's time  I responded...The GS is  a fine bike, I've owned one although it was a pre WC model, it just didn't suit us and that why I changed back to another GTR.

Pistole I'm sure that you will have many many fantastic hours of riding on your new bike, good luck with it and enjoy, I'm very pleased for you

It doesn't look as if anyone on here has heard of the apparent issues with the, ahem, BMW GS, I also thought the 'reports' strange which is why I posted a  emoticon in the first posting, out of interest the links I used were copied from another biking (non BMW) website, (the members of which are always interested in  other marques),    and not originated as a result of any research on my part.

It has been interesting to read all the 'responses' ( :shit:)  to my original posting, and whilst I may be of 'senior' years I can confirm that I do have a long memory, and very big balls   :mfr_lol:

OC I was surprised at the strength of endorsement for this machine after it had ripped the lock stops off the frame on several bikes at press launch.  The press launch was cancelled after an incident which may or mat not be related.  As yet we the end user have not have any official statement from the manufacture with regard to this events premature closure.

Your initial post with regard to the birthing pains of a new product was of interest as being a certified petrol head I'm interested in all technical issues and their conclusions.

As you imply in your open reply.................BMW like all manufactures have product issues and the strength of any marque is its speed to recognise an issue and provide a quality response to that issue.

OC please keep bringing food to this table........I for one may not always agree with the flavour, texture and temperature  of the dish that's served, but variety is the spice of life and life is for living.

I finish with this thought................If a bike is stable and selling well, why erode your profit by fitting a steering damper ?

Mr pistole.. where was that pic taken? it's a very smart and more capable adventure bike than it's competition  do you do a fair amount of "off road riding" I chose the Kawasaki versys 1000 because I don't  just wanted a completely different second bike to my 2013 ZZR1441 but it also needed to be comfortable, have some decent grunt and handle well and the versys 1000 hits the spot just spot on   I also like the new 2014 K.T.M 1190 model with Motorcycle Stability Control "M.C.S" "check this out" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h9MVbkpLZQ  and before the dithering dodderers "Geoff and Rog" say.. you should do all braking before a bend and not on a bend! is of course right  but if you needed to brake on a bend "for what ever reason" the M.S.C would come in very handy  but the new K.T.M 1190 is about as much use to me as a ashtray on the bike  with a seat height of 890mm I would be ok till I needed to stop :surrender: :hammer:

Roger, that is very naughty putting a picture of a steaming pile of poo with that badge sticking from it. You should be aware that a good friend of ours owns one, (a bike ), and apart from pouring vast quantities of oil down its neck, and feeding it regular supplies of headlight bulbs, it has actually been rather good.  :whistling:

here you are  simple really :whistling: in a nut shell.. motorcycle stability control (MSC) that ensures safety and stability in all riding situations. So if you are braking hard while leaning into a bend on a slippery road or accelerating on wet surface, the MSC system will ensure that you can do so without a mishap. MSC supports the biker during both braking and accelerating, and while riding straight as well as while cornering.. but like all safety aids their there to assist should you get it wrong :sweatdrop: and not intended for you to get your self in the  :shit: in the first place  and in which case I don't recommend you test if it saves your  :shit: ter :mfr_lol:

hi.

That pic was taken in Malaysia. It was basically the break-in ride which was undertaken 2 days into ownership.

And yes , am very keen to learn off-roading but have no experience there. So , its going to be a slow process of getting up to speed there.

Indeed , there were 3 bikes on a shortlist , ie :

(a) KTM 1190
(b) Ducati Multistrada
(c) BMW R1200GS LC

The KTM was out because of (1) no local dealer support , (2) the chain drive. And if you believe the internet , this big KTM has a list of issues as long as your arm .... nevermind.

The Multistrada. Now , this was almost purchased. But it wasn't because (1) the local dealers are stupids and more interested in selling you boots/shirts/caps/jackets , (2) the local Ducati crowd are more and more resembling the idiots riding Harleys , (3) the Ducati is very on-road biased , and (4) the build quality is VERY poor for the bikes made in Thailand.

The BMW GS : it got the call up because (1) there was a year end sale , (2) local dealer opened up and (3) all the rep that accompanies a GS.

Now , I have always hated BMW. Whether it was cars or MCs . I thought their cars/bikes were unreliable , over-rated and their owners generally self important pricks.

But having said all that , this new GS LC is a revelation to me as far as how well put together a package it is.

The GS is not the most powerful , neither is it the lightest , nor the fastest , nor the most stylish , nor is it the one with the most street/dirt reputation.

But when you ride the damn thing , you realise that the bike was made as one unit , to be presented to its owners as a singular riding experience.

I can only compare her to the bikes that I have owned / ridden before (my harley FLSTC and the GTR , a 650 Versys , etc) and this is easily the best mc I have ever ridden , by a substantial margin.

Back to Back with the GTR , there is only ONE THING that the GTR does better and it is straight line big speeds.

But , now I realise that there are SO MANY THINGS that the GTR does badly when compared to the GS. This is a GTR forum , but I think the riders here are more mature than the "my ride is the best ride" thing.

Alot here have ridden all sorts of bikes and have all kinds of experiences.

Long story short : this GS is very good. Go and test one !

.

Had  1 650 Gs single
1 650 twin
2  1100's
1 100 Paris Dakar
2 1150 Adventures
2 1150's
2 1200 GS's

So you can see I like 'em. Thing is her indoors reckons the back seat on the GTR is more comfy than any of them....and gave me the witches warning about getting another.  :nono:

Whatever floats your boat or tickles your fancy.
I've ridden GSes and whilst they are a capable (especially the Adventure 1150) they are not my type of motorcycle.
I need the scream of a tortured 4 or 6 cylinder motor that only Kawasaki & Suzuki seem to be able to deliver, and I prefer the K scream.
If I win the Lottery a GS Adventure is high on my list but if I was limited to just one bike it'd be a GTR1000.
Yup, I said 1000. The 1400 is a great bike but I am now finding that I still prefer the older model.
The perfect bike would be the 1400 motor, brakes & suspension in the 1000 frame.
So, for now I have both. :-)
