I have it on reasonably good authority that there will be quite a few changes to the 2014 model year GTR, which may include amongst other things the installation of the 1441 engine
im sooo excited, what other changes ? hope to god they make a lime green one
http://m.kawasaki.ca/product/concours-14-abs
Same spec as the current model?
Love the red though
Checked here as well: http://www.kawasaki.eu/Product/Details/3408EEACCCE
Defo same as current model.
Black and Gray available. Colours are getting boring
I got all excited then, and was just about to pick up the phone!
I guess I'll have to wait another year.... :-(

Actually no Steve it wasn't a wind up......Canadian and Euro spec bikes may vary along with KHI policies between now and the next model year, previous Euro spec machines have 'featured' restricted engine power
Anyway more power wouldn't be much use to you Steve ...eh :mfr_lol:
My info may prove to be totally inaccurate ~ but it has come from a good source...anyway it's not really important to me personally I just thought you might be interested.......obviously not
DOH :2guns:
Roger, don't be like that. Of course I'm interested, 1441cc, sounds good.

Would have been nice had they done something like this for the GTR market...
oc maybe right here. A Kawasaki dealer told me 18 months before the gtr got launched that he was "leaked info " on a new big k tourer and he was right. Kawa aint stupid and they will " leak" info to generate interest and forum activity. OC obviously knows one of the chosen oracles !
Well, I'll be keeping a weather eye on the horizon for a new model GTR.
Active suspension, I think is a marketing gimmick.... But more power is always a bonus. Proper traction control makes things more interesting...
Design wise, it's pretty good, and little things would be better - helmet hooks for touring.... Panniers and top box full of two weeks of gear... You find a little museum and nowhere to secure lids... Grrrrr.... End up carting them around....
Other little things would be nice... But hey... I'm not complaining....
Neil
I was discussing this with the dealer principle earlier this week whilst mine was in for yet another service.
His view was that there were only colour changes to the GTR for 2014, but the Z1000SX was getting some fairly serious revisions - traction control, riding modes and better brakes appear to be suggested elsewhere on t'internet. I would imagine that this is what is generating the 'new K big tourer' type comments.
He also told me that the Z1000SX is easily their best selling Kawa road bike, with the GTR hardly figuring on the greater sales figures. If this is a reflection of the global picture, then it makes much more sense for Kawasaki to invest in the SX rather than the GTR.
Of course it is a Catch-22, if you only ever change the colours, the sales will naturally tail off further removing the R&D spend that can be invested in a model. But, in a tough motorcycling climate, you have to spend the R&D money on the proven sellers I guess.

Correct about the 1000SX 2014 WILL see the following
Great power and torque especially within mid range
Tokico radial-mount monobloc calipers (first time ever on a Kawasaki)
New ABS unit giving precise control of bike and surpressing rear wheel lift under braking
Enhanced intake note
Quicker handling from more direct response to rider input
'Perfectly' integrated panniers each capable of holding a full face helmet and reducing overall width by 70mm
remote rear pre - load adjuster
Improved rear view mirrors
taller 6th gear Better more comfy seat construction
Kawasakis latest 3 mode traction control as fitted to ZZR 1400
Power mode selection Full and Low
Improved instrumentation
I reckon this demonstrates that Kawasaki do listen to customers and are prepared to act positively in order to improve products within this competitive marketplace

I do hope you are right, but I don't think sales volumes justify it. Looking at the HowManyLeft website, as far as I can see, the following sales numbers are valid (this assumes all bikes sold are still taxed/not written off, a fair-ish assumption on a new-ish bike):
2011 GTR, 186 units
2012 GTR, 66 units
2011 ZX1000SX, 553 units
2012 ZX1000SX, 439 units
If these numbers are true, I have to wonder how much longer they will continue marketing and selling our beloved GTRs - in the UK at least.
Martin.
I think the GTR is a fantastic and lovely bike.... but is it really £13500 worth of metal and plastic? with all the other bikes on the market?
I priced a KTM 1190 Adventure R with all the bells and whistles - for £16300..... with a 10% discount that would come down to £14700... its now in a comparable price range and is it really worth it?
the question is, what are you going to use it for? and is it worth that much extra..... To me, prices are getting to the point where I don't think they are worth the "money to use ratio"..... and I use my GTR..... its not just an adornment in the garage.....
Would I take my 16k bike offroad - why the hell not? its been designed to do that! do I ride my GTR like a tourer - yes, how about a sportsbike - yes that too.... can I use it to show up sports bikes - hell yes.
at the moment the GTR is the right bike for me..... If they tweek'ed the equipment, I would certainly consider it... :-) but it definitely requires updating - ZZR 1441 engine and electronic in a GTR frame is the one we need on the street....
Neil
It all depends on the cost of manufacture Neil
We all have different requirements due to different reasons, the GTR is a fine machine...no doubt about that

Horses for courses Gentlemen
If we knock 10% off MRP of our bikes across the board the difference in price is the same (a level playing field) From a salesman's point of view there is no bad product....................just some that suit different people in different ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have loved to have been able to keep my GTR but as you may recall ill health forced me to get a lighter machine :hammer:

- is your switchgear still working ?
- hehe.

Pistole - Yes. 18k and it is fine.
It is very unlikely that K will make any major changes to the GTR for some time.
The GTR1000 was essentially unchanged from 1986 to 2006 with just a wheel/fork/instruments/saddle update in 1994 and colour changes most years.
The ZZR is a different beast. It is generally bought by "faster than everyone else" types who tend to be younger.
The GTR is bought by more mature, more sensible riders who need a fun but practical ride.
Once the GTR gets too sporty for them then they buy BMW tourers and Goldwings. Old mens bikes.
Just love your analisis of the market George :mfr_lol: ...................so if I've got your thoughts on product and its target market correct.......................

We're going to sell our FJR and Hayabusa and replace them with something else. I'm thinking new FJR - cruise control, ESA - or Ténéré- I definitely do like the 'adventure' bikes - but Lyn is pushing me towards another GTR as she was so comfortable on our last two. This is despite me reminding her we'd need to spend money on a Power Commander (again) to give it some low-rev torque and it would be just as uncomfortable on potholes as our existing FJR. I definitely think she views the GTR through rose tints.
We'll definitely end up with something we both want to ride but I was hoping they would update the GTR this year to give me a push towards Lyn's POV, otherwise it doesn't seem like a step forwards.
Kevin
The introduction of the 1441 engine does, on the face of it, seem the obvious thing to do, whether it happens or not for the 2014 year model remains to be seen, it seems likely that there will be the usual 'facelift' changes.
- maybe the new FJR is something to consider.
.
I've always thought and am on record as saying that the FJR is a bloody good looking bike, apparently the latest incarnation is good to ride too ~ I can't speak from experience
I did look at the FJR before I bought number one GTR, I didn't dislike it but the dealer seemed too pushy to get rid of it, I can't recall the exact price of it, (it was new) but it was pretty expensive especially compared to the GTR. It was in a shit colour too which put me off.

I've had 3 GTRs and only had one small warranty issue with one of them, where the headlight adjustment knobs fell off, there was a couple of recalls but besides that the bikes proved to be outstanding...I don't think that the GTR is ay better/worse than any other manufacturer at the moment...There are other makes out there with substantially worse warranty records
Would that be 3 GTRs in 5 years OC ? How many miles did you do on them, 30k ? 40k ? Just intrigued as to why you kept changing...
The GTR, as OC says , is no worse than any other machine on the road.
A couple of recalls, which in fairness were belt and braces jobs, unlikely to cause issue, but just in case, where a lot of other manufacturers would have just awaited warranty jobs as a cheaper option than full fleet recall and amend.
Other issues which are intermittent/not safety issues per se, i.e. warping discs (more down to owner not cleaning them properly - I was one of them!), ignition issues with earlier models, flaking exhaust paint, were sorted quickly with no quibbles through warranty.
Where there have been slight quibbles, Kawasaki have met owners half way. Biggest issue with any of the above has been poor dealerships trying to fob off (no pun intended) to avoid having to carry out warranty or go through the process (like they're that busy with new deals now-a-days?!!).
I was impressed with my GTR and the back up and warranty that came as part of the deal.
I don't think they are any worse than other bikes/marques
And before you ask, I sold mine as I was offered a deal so good I couldn't turn it down on the K16 which is in a different league to all other GT's currently on the market - And I am not 'dissing' the superb GTR which I still rate as one of the best bikes I have ever owned and still enjoy when I test them!

My first one was Black 2007/8 bike which did about 9000 miles, the second was Blue, which was not such a good bike, it had the "buzz" and choppy suspension, I changed it (foolishly) for a K1300GT EE, which I then changed for an R1200GS both of which were horrible, for different reasons, (the K1300 does have the most superb engine though), and my third one a Green 2011 model which was/is an absolutely stonking bike, and was changed due to personal health problems, for a much lighter brand new 2013 model Versys 1000 in late June this year .
The Versys has now covered just over 4000 miles since June

ive had a GTR since 2010 and have had zero problems, 100% faultless bike. However before I bought it I rode the fjr and was impressed with that. My wife didn't like the riding position of the fjr as It put her too low to see around me
the gtr was better priced, a few more extras , a better engine and a Kawasaki .
FJR was prettier, a more sensible layout in terms of twin low down pipes, lower panniers easier to get on and off due to it feeling lower. the ride and handling felt better . I felt more confident on the FJR.
Id consider moving over next time round
Is that why the questions re the value of your GTR?

kind of, ive been thinking about changing the bike and would look again at the Fjr , id also have another look at the Pan. If I sold mine id probably do it in the spring
The new FJR is fantastic, but has lousy weather protection compared to, well most other tourers!

My contact is a reliable well informed source of information. It's fairly common marketing practice for companies to leak a few dribbles of information to 'test the water' its a practice that has been common for years.
Maybe there will be some changes in late 2014 for the next model year, who knows, alternatively the bike may remain the same as it currently is for yet another year, which would leave it somewhat dated and uncompetitive.
Looks like you may have to consider looking for a more 'exciting' machine Viper

I have considered changing the GTR but have decided to hang on to it for a few more years, however if kawasaki did make some significant changes to the model and a colour I liked , then Id strongly consider changing up.
+1 with Kevin ... 3850 miles between services is ridiculous ... The VFR 1200 is 8000 I believe or something similar.... Had I kept the Gtr I would have just serviced it every 6/8000 miles and be done with it. I know you're all busting to know but the Gs is every 6 ... And no it hasn't broken down yet. !!!! :mfr_lol:
I have been having a look at the Triumph Trophy and Explorer, they have service intervals of 10000 miles now that to me is a more realistic interval for a bike that is meant to be doing big miles. There may even be one in my garage by the end of the year

This is the biggest con trick in history.
Do you think that Triumph will specify a different oil than the one that most other manufacturers recommend?.
If Triumphs will do 10,000 miles between services, so will any one elses.
I had a new Explorer when they came out.... sold it and bought the GTR.... Funnily enough I still get letters from Triumph... the latest one is telling me that my Explorer is subject to a recall... it needs a new ECU as there is a problem where it could shut the bike down whilst you're riding it
Along with suspension issues etc etc etc. Have yet to ride one so it's a maybe as of now. Do quite like the look of the new part liquid cooled 1200 RT that too could be a maybe.
