Title: Hi Viz clothing .... Opinions
Post by: Rossendale Rider on August 27, 2012, 03:05:54 PM
As Justin Haywood once said ...."and darker days are drawing near" :whistling:

What's peoples opinions on Hi Viz jackets that look like police clothing?  We had a little discussion about this at the Lower Lode Inn meet and was undecided whether it constituted impersonating a police officer (unless you are one :police:).  I'm thinking about wearing one over my jacket that has the blue/white battenburg reflective strips but no 'police' markings (albeit it clearly is).  In the past, I've seen white pan europeans marked up with wannaby police officers and thought ...Knobs!

Being seen is one thing; being seen as a knob is another?

I use the Hi Viz bib with the Blue and White striping and big lettering on the back that says 'POLITE' ...  :gunsmilie: not been pulled yet and the company that supplies them assures me that they have been examined and approved by the the MET plod.

in my opinion dressing to look like the police is very sad, especially the jackets that say POLITE.

there is a guy round here who has the white pan with almost all the markings , the police outfit with the Polite jackets, even the pole on the rear of the bike with a purple light on it , he rides around intimidating other drivers. my bike cop police friend says he is well known but until the day he actually stops someone pretending to be the police , there is nothing they can legally do about it.

however , wearing a high viz for safety is each to their own, i have dark jackets that has the scotchbrite tape on the arms ect, im not a fan of a neon green jacket.

I wear the same POLITE top which Mogs wears, it says POLITE notice, Think Bike. http://think.direct.gov.uk/ (http://think.direct.gov.uk/)  its a variation of the Govenment inititiave to reduce statistics regarding KSI's These tops are perfectly legal, they are eye catching, impactive and effective in encouraging other motorists to be aware of your presence and hopefully drive/ride accordingly.
My bike does not look anything like a Police bike nor does it have any high viz markings suggesting that it may be. I dont ride in a manner which may intimidate others while wearing the top, I simply wear it because hopefully it will improve my odds of being seen.

Rusty mentioned only recently that he and many other civilian bike riders in London wear unmarked Police high viz style jackets to 'protect' themselves. I see no issue with this, each to their own. I personally dont care what others think I may or may not look like, for me it's about self preservation 100% . Regrettably in my former role I've been to incidents involving bikes and their riders which have even made paramedics puke in front of me at what they were looking at. Any opportunity to avoid that is a win, win situation in  my book.....

Now where's the ladder to climb off my soap box :mfr_lol:

Wholeheartedly agree with all the above, never thought I would advocate hi-viz bibs, but having done a Bikesafe course wearing one it is defo the way ahead. The instuctors said in the briefing that it would be your best days biking, no knobs pulling out in front, everyone giving way/room. Now if thats cos they think I'm a copper then let them, all I know is that it was like Moses parting the sea. I just dont want to be made to wear one !!

well if you are wearing these polite jackets for reasons other than people thinking you are the police then fair enough. Im sure there are people who buy such tops to get a buzz or ego trip out of it, they are the ones who are sad, personally id just wear a normal high viz top  if it was a matter of visability. Wearing one in london is probably a must , remonds me of the ad with the biker and the flasking light sign above him, riding his scooter in london.
I dont do the dailiy commute thing on my bike, it just goes out a couple of times a month when the weather is good. im thinking twice tho about the colour of my new helemt, i always have black , maybe the white would be more sensible

my own hi-vis dose not have blue and white markings, do use the blue and white markings hi-viz jackets as supplied but only when riding police bikes. hi-viz vest with blue and white markings with "POLITE" written on the back can be at a quick glance mistaken for "POLICE" but people see what they want to see.. and this tends to be when they have been riding or driving like a "KNOB" or have got something to hide! it's all in the mind.. "me thinks" ho! providing it dose not say "POLICE" then can't see the arm

Here's my tuppence worth. For 4 years I've been commuting the A303 (plus 50 miles each end) on Friday and Sunday's. Most of that on a tiger. I've got HG Tuareg goretex for summer and HG voyager goretex IN HIVIS for winter. Also have white and metallic grey multitecs with boom mikes.

I can say 100% that the HIVIS gear plus the white lid gets me seen more (or gets drivers to drop the phone, check their speed or correct whatever the dumb thing their doing as I go  past). In that half second of "is he or isn't he" time,  I'm out of danger and making progress. I usually go by slowly at wide berth shaking my head despairingly. The effect is more pronounced now I have the GTR!

These dumbass drivers on their mobiles can't multitask at best so working out whether you're the old bill or not as you sweep by is beyond them. The POLITE jackets are great but not for me - at least not until I've got my white 1200RT !

The standard Tuareg gear just doesn't get the same response except from the usual courteous drivers who I always thank.

With the high vis on I've always found people do a double take. Which, as tommytool, is great as it allows you to make progress.

Obviously there's no accounting for everyone's action but high vis IMO is a must

I have a high vis jacket from H.G and a silver C3 helmet

Gillian wears an Oxford High vis bib over her H.G clothing

I reckon you should give yourself every chance of being seen ,and evidence suggests that wearing high vis improves others awareness of you whilst on the bike

mmmmm, after reading what you have all riwritten, i may have been wrong on this one, if the polite jackets / vests are about promoting safety and allowing good progress through traffic then its got to be a good thing, If some tool mistakes you then I guess its his problem.

I was behind a numpty today who was on a beaten up bandit with a small child  ( approx 8 yr old) on the back, wearing jeans and trainers and a very large adult helmet, he was ripping wheelies from the lights and hammering it to the next set where i would be behind him again. I thought to myself i bet he would not be doing this if I had one of those Polite vests on

HATE IT!!

Fundementaly if someone is not looking they won't see you, it really is that simple. However having said that if it's dark or raining I do slip a hi-viz (REv'it) waistcoat on over my kit, just to make me even more obvious to the miopic box jockeys. In daylight, especially in the sun, I see no need, if someone doesnt see a 6'3" bloke on a very large, well lit bike, wearing a yellow and white helmet, then wearing a hi-vis vest will make no difference.

I spend a lot of money on kit to keep me warm, or more importantly cool, and a vest ruins all the lovely advantages of gore-tex etc. I have no wish to look like a policeman or a road mender either!

So in summary I do see some advantages depending on conditions, but I want to choose when and if I wear one. Once upon a time biking was for rebels  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

But what will happen is that if you are involved in an accident in low light conditions and its a bit of a 50/50 thing don't be suprised if it goes against you because the other side bangs on about the fact that you have a duty of care to make yourself seen.

This has already happened with the mini indicators, insurance lawyers jump on this if there was any doubt as to whether or not you actually bothered to use them before being pole axed by a driver.

Now there is no bigger anti-social rebel type Biker than me, but even i use hiz viz when I go into london.

And Hi Viz will end up being compulsory because twats on fookin weekend bikes ride like c**ts on a sunday and annoy the fook out of everybody else, gone are the days of being able to Hoon without due care and attention, there are is too much distraction for drivers to pay attention, and waaay too many riders that think just because they've done an advanced rider course, they can ride above their own ability.

If you want to stop Hi Viz, join MAG or the BMF or get off ya arse and write to ya MP.

Perhaps I'm happy to wear high viz because its just a natural thing for me to stick on a high viz jacket and I probably dont give it a right lot of thought. I completely understand why some folk dont want to wear high viz and that's absolutely fine. Take Asif for example in his recent spill over at Bradford, he had high viz on and two additional lights on the font of the GTR. So that's six lights and a bright high viz bib and yet someone still pullled out on him.
You can only do what you can, the advantage is that the other party's insurance company will seriously struggle to suggest that you were not doing your bit to protect yourself and be seen thereby hopefully making the process of your claim relatively easier and less complicated.

Viper, no it wouldn't go against you as you are under no obligation to wear high viz, (currently) but I would just like to be in a strong position if I ever got knocked off and be able to say, I had four lights on, a high viz vest and the GoPro will prove that I wasn't speeding how the hell didn't you see me?  :gun_bandana:

Yup thas the one.... and no thas not what meant... the point is if the plod aren't interested to atributing blame to anyone and it goes to a small claims court, both the insurance companies with do their level best to wiggle out of it.

for example ...In cases where 'whiplash' is being claimed for, insurance assessors are now instructed to see if the seat was adjusted properly in accordance with recomendations found in the owners manual... if not they will use it to wiggle out or reduce payment.

I know that this happens as one of my clients is a consultant for the insurance industry, his job is to look at instances where there is are high payouts and look for loopholes and find ways that companies can get out of paying ..... this is all the fault of the 'Ambulance Chasers' btw....
so you are looking at things like,
Dark tints on windows and visors when the light is poor.
Are the tyres reccomended for the vehical (ooh err PR3's ) and are they at the right pressure... so could it have effected braking?
Shitty mini indicators,
Badly adjusted seats... usally being sat in by some oaf in a 106
Children in the rear seats.... yes really!!

The the list is long and petty, but this is what happens when you make a claim, someone looks very hard and sees if they can wiggle out of it...
soooo do ya self a favour, if you are going out in the gloom of winter put a Hi Viz on... would it really hurt that much..

Ride safe..

What a truly idiotic post! If you really think that hi-vis will save you from a fatal accident you shouldn't be out on your own. Riding skill, observation, correct kit, advanced riding instruction are all more important to staying safe than hi-vis. Using the same logic should we paint all cars hi-viz yellow? Thus reducing road accidents to nil?

I dress according to the conditions and ride the same way, it's served me well for 25 years and counting.

If you think biking is that dangerous just stop and let the rest of us enjoy it. Attitudes like this are why we are walking blindly in to a spoon fed, totally risk averse society. You accept compulsory hi-vis then it'll be airbag vests, then what? stabilisers, power restrictions, type approval and then the end of biking.

Cartman, perhaps you didn't understand Mr Trousersnake's post. Nobody is saying wear a high viz and you wont get hit, it's about giving yourself a better chance out there. Why does anyone undergo further bike training? I'll go out on a limb and say it's usually to further their skills and improve their chances of survival on the busy roads. The same can be said for making yourself more visible.

Anyway I'm more than happy to wear a high viz and if others think I look like a tit then I guess I look like a tit. But at least I'll be a bright tit in my high viz.  :mfr_lol:

Clearly making a link between hi-vis and road deaths, no proven connection, no evidence that hi-vis even reduces risk. Consider that if hi-vis was made compulsory then, as the law stands today, I could ride with helmet, a pair of shorts, and a hi-vis vest and be legal  no one wants to see that :mfr_lol:

Agree with advanced training, done quite a bit, but the onus is on you to apply your skills.

Personal Opinion
Not talking compulsion, but the choice to wear.
If it increases your chance of survival by 1% of 1% then why not wear it?

I do not wear it so much for it's value on the bike, but for increasing my chances if I come off the bike.
Dark night on some country road, get taken out by a rabbit, fox of heaven forbid anything larger. Separted from bike and laying unconscious in the road or a water filled ditch. If Hi-viz makes me easier to spot before I get run over  or die of hypothermia in the ditch, I'll wear it.

But my choice, I don't preach to those who choose not to.

Well, the whole debate just sounds like what we had before helmets became compulsory to me.
BTW I wear a hi-viz jacket and all the protective gear all the time so I don't care if they make hi-viz compulsory or not.
I also use the 'all the  :asshole: s out there are trying to kill me' attitude when I'm out on the bike.
Has served me well so far and nobody has succeeded to knock me off in over 30 years of biking yet.  :biker3:

So what? Cycle helmets have been compulsory even in New Zealand for nearly 20 years now
So is having sex with sheep.... but I'm sure Cycling lids will be just as welcomed by our peddling brethren as they were back in the day by all you old buggers who used to ride leaky British iron.  :single fuck:

Right then guys (and Debs),  I certainly got some opinions which is great.  Anyway, back to the very original point of wearing high visibility clothing that looks like police wear.  I've concluded 'who gives a  :censored:.  Its not going to stop 93 year old Mrs Moggins or the 126mg/ Polish lorry driver pulling out on me; Citroen Saxo youth might slow down to 52 in the 30s and BMW driving sales rep man might think..knob. But, it just might get the attention of someone who was about to side swipe me!  Here's the offending article:

As you are all talking about sheep and hi viz I thought I would shae these with you..  :mfr_lol:

Due to the latest EU regulations, which came into force 01.04.2010, all sheep which are allowed to roam free within 50 metres of a main road must now wear Hi Vis jackets !

Ermm... Those sheep are all rams! I'm now more worried about who I'm posting to instead of "Saxo Boy" on his mobile on his way to KFC texting his spotty chav chums instead of noticing me turning right!

( I've had a bad day .....  alright!!!!!)

still does not sit easy with me, wearing a jacket so people think you are the police, there are plenty of high viz jackets on the market that are not police looking,

forgive me rossendale rider but your jacket choice appears to be a clear attempt to pose as a police officer, you could be vizzed up in a random looking jacket and still have the same safety factor , which im all for.

WOW ! I have been at work for a few days and I come back to this thread !!
RR ... nice jacket, someone says you look "snug" .... I think you need to loose weight !  :mfr_lol:
Interesting stuff and a lot of decent comments from Mr Wolf, Mecki, and all of you .... my day to day jacket has bright yellow shoulders and sleeves and about now I put on the "winter" reflective, which is very much like RR's .... mainly to be seen in the winter months and also to keep the winter shit off my nice jacket and also as an extra layer to keep the elements at bay.
Even if you are the brightest thing on the road with extra lights drivers will still pull out on you not because "they didn't see you" it's because THEY DIDNT LOOK and then of course they are not going to see you !
Insurance wriggling was mentioned .... there is no law to say you have to wear a high viz jacket, like The Highway code is ONLY advisory, but it has to help you in the event of a claim if you WERE wearing such stuff... it's just something else the insurance Co will try and beat you with because they don't want to pay out. It just helps. It just makes you a bit more noticeable. It just shows that you care.
We know there are "wanna be" Police riders out there in their jackets and white helmets and reflective panniers and I really don't have a problem with them if that's what they want to do ... they may be seen by many which can only be a good thing.
At the end of the day chaps it's a personal choice, and of course life is full of choices, but the main thing is that we must not forget the basic riding skills and education that we all have at differing levels to keep us safe from harm and enjoy the vey reasons why we became riders in the first place......

Viper, (forgiven) that's quite an interesting link to snippets and if I saw that rider 'on patrol' on that bike with that livery and helmet holding lane 2 thinking he was CHiPs, I'd say knob! However, I can assure you that if I venture out in my 'snug' (thanks guys) hi viz jacket, it is not in any way an attempt to look like a police officer. My helmet is patterned and my bike is green with not a smidging of reflective tape on it.  In any case, the jacket was free......sort of :mfr_lol:

*****UPDATE****

From my inside source at the insurance industry... from April 2013... in the the event of a SMIDSY accident, a rider NOT wearing some HI VIZ apparel is likely to get 15% less on their payout ..... obviously this not any form of legislation but is worked out as a 'Gentlemans' agreement with the insurance cost adjusters.

This is in the same way that if you have the drivers seat, in a car, set in the Chav position, ie seat back all the way back, you will get 15% less (or none if they can get away with it) in the event of a Whiplash claim.

Rant all you want ... thems how it ...

You have 2 choices in todays society... either you live within the rules, get ya arse taxed off, criminalized by councils and plod (no offence chaps) for minor offences, and generaly taken up the bum by politicians.
or
Live outside all the rules... and all the risks that entails..

There are no grey areas anymore, where one can be 'a bit naughty'

I spent 20 years living on the outside, I'm too fookin old to go back and play that game again... so for the most part, i am a pleasant and law abiding member of the community, and will put up with all the things i have no control over and are imposed on me...including looking like a twat in a yellow jacket...........mind you... it's gonna be fookin funny watching the H.A come roaring down the highway wearing Hi Viz back patch's ..... :mfr_lol:

If France's lead is the one that is taken, don't get too hung up about 'hi-viz'.

All the hoo-haa about that, and all they are saying is that the upper body must have the equivalent of a fag packet/CD of reflective material.  Reflective.  Not Day Glo (yellow/orange)

Evening all
nice jacket  but it looks like the water proof "over the leathers" unbreathable type if so, be warned.. you will be  :sweatdrop: ing even in the winter with this type on.. ho! infact, we've nicknamed this type the "boil in the bag suit" there is a cotton breathable version thats also goes over your leathers which is a much better option to have

They are a Gore-Tex (or similar) material - waterproof and breathable.  Excellent bit of kit, quality even.

Will wash about 25- 35 times too before they give up the ghost.

(I am assuming it's the waterproof one!)
