Title: GTR down
Post by: Kwikasfuki on July 22, 2012, 06:33:36 PM
Not the post I want to be writing.

Yesterday I was involved in accident in Bradford (Bradford gets it revenge for me calling it Bradistan!).

Car pulled out of a side road and I went into the side. Fortunately it wasn't at speed but the bike went down. Somehow I managed to get off the bike before it went down. My wrist and back seem to have taken the impact and are extremely sore today.

The bike doesn't look too damaged, however the forks are bent. I doubt replacing the front end plus forks will be cheap, so I don't expect the bike to be repairable. The R&G crash protectors did their job, and the rear pannier was slightly scraped. The front however ...

Neither do I expect to be back on a bike for a while. Whilst not a serious accident, it has made me think about the young family I have and the consequences of the bread winner not being about.

The customary pics

so sorry to hear that and glad you are not badly hurt, im sure every down'd rider initially wants to get out of biking after such and incident, but most jump back on the horse. Maybe just using a bike for pleasure rather than commuting may lower your risks. We only really use our bike on nice sundays!

So sorry to hear of your "off" Asif. The main thing is you don't sound to be to badly hurt. Understand how you feel about the dangers etc, only you can decide on how you feel about geting back on two wheels. Hope your feeling less damaged asap & that your claim against the car driver goes without any problems.

All the best.

Asif, the one thing you have to remember is that it was not your fault, you were riding correctly and they were the guilty party.

I had this a few years ago when I was taken out by a youngster and seeing my daughter in tears with her dad in an ambulance I also said I had better stop, it lasted about six months before I got another bike, even having two plates and ten screws in a hip I still ride, life is for living to the full and we both like riding bikes.

Chin up young man.

Asif, Been there and sympathise. But remember you can get injured crossing the road, in the car or even in your home.
(I am told more people get killed and injured doing DIY than any biking)

You are right to consider the family, and I expect they will not want you to get back riding again, but see how a few weeks change your views. The most important thing is for you to get recovered and of secondary importance after your 'repairs' is to get the bike fixed.
But I hope you and the bike are back up and running soon.

Get well soon mate.

sorry to hear about this asif.. main thing is your ok, if the forks are bent with quite a bit of cosmetic damaged. it's likely it will be wrote off  if you decide to get another bike will it be another gtr1400?
Title: Re: GTR down
Post by: Lonewolf on July 22, 2012, 08:29:24 PM
Asif, first impressions are that it doesn't look too bad but it's what you cant see thats a concern. As we've all said, you are alive, albeit with a few areas of discomfort which will ease over the next few days/weeks.

It's every bikers worse nightmare, a car pulling out from a junction after not seeing/looking properly. Six lights on the front of the GTR and a high viz vest, you have to ask, why did they not see you? How did they not see you?

The positive thing is that you had the Police attend and that the other party was insured. Small consolation I know but there are so many drivers in Bradford, especially that part of Bradford who are un-insured. Thats a statistical fact.

I'm sure your'e confidence will bounce back and you'll be back on two wheels soon, but at the same time I respect and fully understand your concerns for your family. Just dont rush into any decisions, we all want you back on two GTR wheels asap.

Keep your spirits up, Steve

Asif, so sorry to hear of your mishap. Did it happen whilst you were on your way home after leaving us?. As others have stated you sometimes think, and say things in the heat of the moment, that when you sit and reflect on what has happened after a few days have passed, things may not seem as bad. Good news is you were not injured to badly, your bumps and bruises will  fade, and life will seem much rosier. just remember mate that you could have hurt yourself far more by tripping over a kids toy, or doing an odd job around the house. As you say they will probably write your bike off, so best to start saving now for the new GREEN one. Hope you get fit soon.

Asif, if the insurance co do decide its not worth reparing you could either buy it back and do it yourself as you know the history or remove all the saleable parts and put the originals back on and either install on another one or sell them for cash.

and dont get a green one, you know the black is the best  :mfr_lol:

Also what colour was rear gunners bike for a lot of the day ??? (GREEN    )   :mfr_lol:

Asif, I'm sorry to hear about your accident, there are some real dozy pillocks on the road, some of them shouldn't be let loose with a wheelbarrow never mind a car.

As others have said the bike may well be written off if the repair costs exceed the market/realisable value of the bike, in which case get your bits off it.

Thankfully you are not badly hurt, and I fully understand that its made you think about riding a bike, but when you consider that you've done 50.000 miles on it with no problems its one of those things, and it wasn't your fault

I'm glad you're relatively unscathed, and I know that you'll make the right decision mate.

BTW it was real good to see you and ride out yesterday

Asif ... just back from work and onto the Forum after a few days away ... the first thread I read is this one !

So glad that you are ok, all be it a bit sore ... remember as others have said that the bike can be sorted or mended or replaced or whatever but you can't and so long as you are on the mend safe and well then that is the no 1 priority.

Your confidence in riding will return, I have no doubt ... you didn't spend all that money on Rukka kit just to get rid of it after a few weeks !

Keep us posted on the incident and Ins updates etc .

I did enjoy the sunshine today by taking all my bits off the bike. There's one rounded nut that isn't letting me remove the exhaust. I will get the dremel to it this week. The bike is back to stock. Most of my goodies I've removed. Some like the fender extender I've left on.

Thanks for all the messages of support. Last time I had an off, it took about 9 months for the bug to bite and I expect it will be about the same this time. The last accident I had was pretty similar and I swore to myself I'd get a big bike that would absorb the impact. The GTR was fantastic in protecting the rider. Also, the fact that I'm storing most of the accessories and not selling them is probably an indication that I will at some point get back on the bike.

Good man Asif, once the biking blood is in you it never goes away.

That exhaust sounds to good to sit in the shed, it needs a bike and when your ready I am sure your skills will come to the fore and on it will go to a suitable machine.

Asif, been busy for a few days and only just read about your off. Really sorry to hear about the damage to your bike but relieved to read that you are reasonably OK. Guess I can only repeat what others have written that you should take your time about deciding what you will do with respect to getting back in the saddle. As someone who uses my bike to commute every day I am constantly aware of how vunerable we are and that we appear to be invisible to a large number of other road users. I gues the only lesson we can learn from your accident is that when in Bradford drive a  :tank: .

Asif, just a thought. If you haven't already done so make sure you update the Officer who is dealing with your incident with the extent of your injuries. Having a record of your attendance at hospital or your GP always helps also. You might not want to but make sure you seriously consider putting a claim into the other parties insurance company for injuries sustained, & any other hardship caused due to the collision, trust me the other parties insurance company will be more surprised if you dont!
Any bruising etc, get it photographed ideally by the Police or alternatively by your wife.

It may go against the grain, but handled correctly you could come out of this with a new GTR, (magnesium GTR of course).  :whistling:

A claim like this will easily be worth £5k - £10k.

+1 from Mr Wolf ... plus keep ANY receipts for taxis and travel that you have to use where normally your bike would take you.
Clothing damaged ? Again receipts and any photos of damaged goods and in their original state .. Keep a diary EVERY DAY of how you feel and the injuries you have and the pain killers you are taking ... write down date and time of phoning the officer (OIC) and if you don't get to speak to him make sure you get the name of the person passing your message ... do that and all will go a lot more smoothly in months to come I can assure you.
Hope all is on the mend Asif.

What's the benefit in getting in touch with the officer that attended? I've not checked the clothing, but it did take an almighty whack. Although the helmet didn't take a hit, the insurance company have said it shouldn't be used again.

Asif, ultimately your insurance company and the other chaps company will want to have sight of the collision form. Its whats callled a disclosable document, although some of it will be restricted.
What this document contains carries a lot of weight as to what the insurance company do in respect of paying you out. Occasionally also the attending Officer will be interviewed by a solicitor acting for the other side.
Make it work in your favour, be honest with it obviously but claim for everything as a starting point.

Take the cash and run
Take the cash and buy back the bike and fix it
Take the cash and buy a different bike (ZZR1400?)
Take the cash and get a new GTR

Once bikes are in your blood its hard to get them out of your system. The commute to work at the moment is bearable given its school holidays. But with the nice weather we've been having I wish I was on a bike

Have you broached with your insurance company a claim against the other driver for compensation to get you back on a GTR? I cant see how you could lose. Asif, you know what damage was caused, I seem to remember forks etc, you could do a estimate of the cost to replace against what's being offered for the bike, in my humble opinion any damages you get from the car diver is a bonus for you and your family, strictly on bike finances you need to make this judgement.

On the one hand having a bike you know back on the road is on thing, on the other some people don't want the one they had the accident on back, depends on the money situation.

I have had a look about and in reality there are some pretty good deals to be had on used GTR bikes etc so perhaps that might be a consideration.

Whatever, you need to be on something the next time us softy southerners come up to Yorkshire home of the gold medals.

I agree with Viper. My old VN900 was crashed into whilst parked. I had to convince the insurers repair shop to replace some parts with cheaper replacements because they were gonna write it off (cat c). I knew I'd never get a another equivalent bike with the payout and didn't want to be the owner of a cat c machine.

I'm always off topic  but one does not always need a fairing... I'm thinking getting a lighter easier to wizz about on bike with re-build lost confidence... worked for me a few years ago.  :smartass:

Asif, I dont think buying the bike back of the insurance company and mending it yourself is a very good idea, as others have said you would have to keep it forever, as in the bike buyers eyes it would be a written off bike that had been cobbled back together, and still carry the stigma of being a category c write off. No for me you must take the money,( Have they made an offer yet ? )and then go and find another bike. As you have seen on here there are lots of bargains, and there will be more, and more as we approach winter. Think long and hard my friend, then come up with the right decision.  Good luck,    and happy hunting .

I hear what you guys are saying, but bear in mind that I know this bike inside and out. I saw the reason why its been classed as a Cat C. Parts that weren't even involved in the accident are listed!

Also, if I do buy the bike, I'll be buying it cheap and for repairs, well, fleabay is my friend.

As we're in the process of purchasing a house, I'd rather spend the motorbike money on reducing mortgage, so repairing this and riding it makes economical sense to me at the moment.

Not yet decided though.

It means that when you crashed, the forks and bars were twisted all the way to one side so that they hit the "stop" on the frame and damaged it.  Could be expensive to fix if it's really bad.  It may have also broken the ability to enable the handlebar lock?

Ah, the handlebar lock still engaged just about. Trying to find it on the parts fiche so I can see what it looks like

Went to look at the bike again today. It looks like there's a slim chance that the head stock is damaged. Based on that I'm going to have to let it go

I did hear a rumour that Kawasaki maybe updating the model for 2013.

Time to get on ebay and look for a cheap bike to tide me over
