For those who know i have had this problem, and this morning had the disks and pads changed by the dealer, the brake pulsing has gone, but the vibration and loud noise from the front end is still present, currently at work having ridden back from the dealer but intend to take the bike back Saturday morning for them to "have another go".

To my uneducated thought the noise sounds like a wheel bearing and this might cause the vibration, but i dont know for sure, anybody else have a theory?

When i got the bike new in Sep all i could hear was the engine and exhaust note, the bike was smooth as one could imagine, not now, you cant hear the exhaust over 50mph and the vibration sends your hands to sleep.

Bearings. And whilst you're at it, get the dust seals replaced.

Notes from todays ride.

I still have the 'clonking' from the front end when i brake at slow speeds.... tbh I'm still not 100% convinced that the new discs are true, as when you spin the wheel there is a difference in resistance at certain points.

I had a service done today, at a non Kawasaki dealer... and the spanner monkey remarked 'Fook me that's some pad rattle you got there'

Ok so on to the vibration..... it disappears once the clutch is pulled in.... and is noticable when one revs the engine at a standstill...
Could this be because I have the BOS pipe fitted???.....
Does anyone get bad vibes with the spud launcher on ???...if i get time this weekend i may swap 'em back and see.

The vibration gets noticably worse once the pertrol tank is empty.... so something is reasonating under there....
Could this be engine mounts not torqued up correctly??

TBH I'm starting to get a bit miffed, this is a great bike, but the vibes though the bars are begining to be an issue, and one I'm afraid that will see me selling the bike, this is supposed to be Kawasaki's tourer..... tis a bit difficult to tour with numb hands  :hammer:

'Igor bring me the Spud Launcher'
'Yesth masthter'
'MAAAAAAAWAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAAA!!!!!...It lives'
'Masthter....it is tewely hideousth!!'
'Yes Igor but for the good of science...we must!!!!'

So today I had a right old moan at the dealer informing him that my bike was no more a tourer as is my BSA Bantam, I also told him the bike was out the front with a full tank of fuel and he could ride it where he liked but I wanted it sorted.

So his man went out and agreed the wheel bearings "might" be making the noise leading to the vibration, so there next on the list to be changed along with a new tyre on the front to try to bring the bike back to as it was last September.

As usual will keep you up to date with progress.

9,000 miles 3 years old, passed it's first MOT last week without any comment. No vibration no pulsing or noises from the front. I have owned the bike for just over 18 months and put 7,000 miles on it without any issues. I do not use it to commute the 20 miles to work, and use it only for pleasure purposes. I am very gentle on the brakes both on the bike and in the car. Still on original discs and pads on the GTR, and the standard fit tyres lasted 5,000 miles, 1 set of discs all round and 1 set of pads all round to date in my 120,000 mile Mondeo. Could it be down to driving style? Are you all a bunch of mad nutters perhaps??? :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Just watch, next week the discs and pads on both will fall to bits now.

YES....I think we should as this clearly isn't an isolated case

Maybe Kawasaki U.K could be told about the problem and advised to read the relevant posts on this forum (if they don't already do so), that way they will be able to see the type and range of issues that are occuring with the GTR.

Maybe the problems exist within a certain frame/build range  :undecided:

This was something that had occurred to me, that there was in fact a small batch of Bikes with problems....

I'll dig out my frame and engine numbers later and post 'em

I don't know how, but perhaps a link to a spreadsheet that we could each fill in details of our own bikes ailments, so we can build up a picture. Or iIf you like I would be able to log details if you send me emails with your problems. (bike problems of course, not health issues or lonely hearts).
For security sake I suggest a list of the following info from each member:
Model year of bike.
Reg number (just the numbers 08,58,09,59 etc not the whole registration).
Brief description of problem.
Mileage at which problem occurred.
Current mileage of bike.
Whether under warranty or not when fault occurred.
What was the response from the dealer.
Name of dealer.
Cost of repair.

As well as our own purposes, I am sure that Kawasaki UK would be interested, as we would be doing their testing and reporting for them, in the real world environment. I would contact Kawasaki on our behalf for their thoughts.
What do you think?

More than happy to provide this information. By the model year do you mean the designation: A8F, A9F etc? That should be more accurate than the number plate.

So for mine

Model:                     A8F
Reg:                        08
Colour:                    Black
Description:            Front disc warped
Mileage:                  Approx 35k
Warranty:               Yes (extended)
Dealer response:     Brilliant. Got them replaced
Dealer name:           Autorama
Cost of repair:          N/A (warranty)

I think that this is a positive way forward with regard to this problem

Kawasaki UK really should be made aware that this situation/problem exists, and that members of this forum are doing something constructive in an attempt to help resolve the issues

10 outa 10 Mogs for the suggestion and ChrisB for his offer to assist

Hopefully I have sent a PM to Kwikas asking him to create a section where we can all add our experiences. I have also asked him to add a few instructions stating the post is for factual information only and not a post for slagging off the manufacturer or for placing personal opinions and comments, which would not be useful nor constructive. I will then put them all together and send the info to Kawasaki service section. Also please do not put any personal details or info that may be of use to the crooks and thieves of this world.

If you want to send details direct to me, you can email to         [email protected]

My brakediscs started vibrating at ca 1600 miles, got new on warranty.  I drove several thousand miles befor I got them replaced.
Due to the long distance to the dealer. The new oneå had a another finishnr.
Have done ca 2000 miles on the new discs without any problems.
Hope they lasts long

I live in Norway. I think this is a global problem. The discs  do not handle the heavy load of the GTR
Kawasaki have to know about this problem.

08 model bought Aug 2007.
Never had any vibration from the front apart from ABS activation.
Never had any disc warpage.

However, I do clean my discs with brake cleaner about once a month.
Currently @ 49,400 miles and still on OEM discs.
They are at 4.2 and 4.1mm though and will soon be replaced.
I used OEM pads for first 25k, EBC HH for 22k and currently have Ferodo HH's.

right...... test done...'Put the Spud launcher back in the box Igor'..........'yeths mathster'.....

The spud launcher makes only a tiny difference to the vibration, my fingers are tingling even now, ...... I got the bike out this morning and was up to crusing speed within 2 mins... as I live close to the M10/M1... and for the first couple of mins the vibration was dreadfull in fact worse than usuall....could be because i don't usually go up the M10 straight from home sos the bike was cold.

But..... the interesting thing was that the vibration diminished as the bike warmed up  it didn't go completely but settled to it's usually tingely-ness....

I'm wondering if the engine mounts could be at an incorrect torque setting??? not being an engineery chap i dont know if this could cause this.

I think that once I get back i'm going to contact Kawasaki officialy and complain......if anyone has contacted them previously about a vibe issue (Alan??) ...and has a contact there, could they forward me the name...ta.

If I dont get this sorted I'm afraid the bike is going to have to go, I really do love the thing but I can't live with this ...it's supposed to be a long distance tourer, not a hand numbing machine.... and besides surely there is a safety consideration if ones hands are going numb then you can't be in proper control of the bike.

Cheers Mogs

The 'vibes' or the 'buzz' as it is referred to across the pond really shouldn't exist on a modern machine.

My 2010 model was terrible, resulting in very, very tingly hands (read numb) and me changing the bike for summat from the dark side....but enough of that  :mfr_lol:

The thing that irratates me most of all, is that we are expected to accept this and are given nothing but attitude from the dealers...

Again, i wonder, if this is a curse of modern 'stiff frames' .... Smartys Bandit, with its frame made from gummy bears and bolted together with number plate bolts.... had no vibes at all and was a smooth as a pole dancers arse..

Same here, still OEM after 42000 Kms, it seems that the earlier models 2007 and 2008 have the least of these mechanical issues, disk warp, shock spring loader etc...

I have been in email contact with Simon Chitty ([email protected]) who knows all about ,y situation, and indeed the latest events where new disks and pads have been fitted but the vibration and noise still exists.

If you choose to email him you can quote my name Alan Crowder from Oxford and Premier Bikes quite happily, keep me informed either here or a pm as the more he knows about these hassles the better.

Owned a 2009 for 2 months. Done 1500 miles and satisfied with the package.

Just back from a two up long weekend in France - Le Mans area.

Happy with the bike - did notice vibe when firm braking required.

My bike is going in Thursday to have the following checked, front wheel bearings, headstock bearings and engine torque settings along with a general look over to see if the problem with the vibration is apparent, a new tyre is being fitted (PR3) at my request.

Will advise afterwards.

Did a 466 miles trip yesterday. Nice trip,ok weather and good roads. But warped my front breakdiscs for the second time.
First time last year after 1500-1600 miles, don't remember exactly. Didn't get to change them before 4670 miles.
And yesteday when I noticed the vibrations it read 6215 miles.
Spoke to the dealer today but the guy responsibe for handling warranty issues wheren't in before wednesday.
Not happy,I reckon there will be a discussion his time who's gonna pay. Talked with several kawa dealers here in Norway to day,and they all say there have been no issues regarding warped disc's. Stange then that I have had two.

Checked the caliper and brake pads, all ok. Fitted the wheel, caliper and the front fender as described in the manual.
Did a test ride and guess.... the brakes dont't vibrate anymore. Going to take a longer test ride tomorrow.

An update on the Vibration issue, Simon at Kawasaki has arranged for my bike to be collected on Friday this week and dropping off a Versys, they will then take it back to wherever it goes and check it out, they also have a new GTR there to compare it with, i will advise the Forum of the progress.

I could have done with there GTR to compare it myself with but they are being extremely helpful so cant moan to much.

After initial testing of the bike Kawasaki reckon there is nothing wrong but they want another guy to take a look on Monday, there also fitting a new rear shock adjuster as that's seized solid as well.

If the final version from Mr K is no and there is nothing wrong with the bike I do know they have a GTR there so I will insist I ride there loan bike to there workshops and do my own comparison and then have a chat, if I find there bike is the same as mine then it's my hands and head which need examining, if it's perfect then the shouting and stamping of feet will ensue, also a chat with the family solicitor to see what rights I have, because right now this is no more a touring bike than the Fireblade's I used to own.

Got the bike back today, as i suspected Kawasaki say there is nothing wrong with the bike at all, even comparing it with the one they have there, well thats just another one with vibration then.

Dissapointed or what!

Well i shall have to see what i can do to reduce the vibes on my hands, bar end weights and suchlike.

If i had to give advice to anybody considering purchasing a new GTR, it would be dont, until they have sorted it out completely, if i had my time again i also would not, great bike for the first 2300 miles but now, hindsight would leave me to hold on until the new Triumph comes out and see.

Sorry to hear about this Alan, tis a bloody shame...... I'm sure that there are other people who are finding the same problem as we did and aren't on the forum and therefore don't have a voice on this subject.
If you look about the web there are a rather suspicious amout of 2010/11 bikes up for sale, which makes me think that owners are, like me, just getting shot of them....

there must be something that Kawasaki have done between the earlier model that has caused this in some way, I wouldn't mind betting that a lot of information was gathered whilst your bike was with Kawasaki and this along with other info that they have is being looked at back in japan..... not that it helps any of us who have been blighted by this problem.  :ohplease:

Oh I don't know about that, but in France there are not many 2nd hand ones for sale at all. Those that are for sale seem to be for a fairly high price too.  And I haven't seen many GTRs in Italy at all...

Mine is still a French spec 2010 model and I've had it from new. No issues to report at all (apart from the obvious fact that there are about 55 horses missing anyway...  :censored:)

I'm very sorry to hear about these problems that you folks are having. Which reminds me, I must go and check if I can still move the suspension adjuster....

That is bad news. Do you know if they retorqued the engine mountings on the bike?

I am told by the dealer who had it before Kawasaki they checked the torque settings, they did not slacken off the bolts then re-torque them.

Is this a DIY job as to be honest i am losing interest in keep taking it back.

Yes, it is a DIY job? Do you have the manual?

How severe is the vibe?

I think I have the manual on a computer upstairs, the vibe is a pain in the hands literally when touring at around 4000rpm with them going numb.

The bit which worries me is removing the fairing, the rest I can happily do but I remember removing a Sprint ST fairing and busting it.

Here are a update on my vibrating front brakediscs. Have been to the dealer for my  7500miles service.
Everything ok but the frontbreaks. They checked out the wheelbearings, calipers, brakepads, the rim and tyre.
All ok. Washed the brakedisc with brakeclean and a strong solvent for removing asphalt.(Dont know what it's called in english).Rubber the brake disc and the pads Put the bike together but it did vibrate as before. Got new brakediscs and pads on warranty.
Have not changed them yet. Hopefully next week. Talked to the dealer and he told me that they have hade two problem bikes earlier.
This was the zz-r1400. They solved the brake problem on these bikes, when they changed the pads disc and the rim.
If my problem appears again after changing them this time, they will do the same on my bike. All on warranty.
And this is not the dealer I bought the bike from. Very pleased with the service. They even washed the bike for me before I picked it up after the service.

I would start by doing the easy things:

Torque the header, exhaust, tank before attempting the engine mounting
Heavier bar ends, or adding a washer in between bar end and grip
Grip puppies are also known to help

- did you get to ride the Dealer's tester unit ?

- did the tester also generate the vibrations that you speak of at the 4,000 rpms range ?

- did the dealer/principal's rep acknowledge the vibs ?

.

- the reason for asking is that I am in the midst of breaking in my 2012 GTR and am doing it by the book (and it says to keep her below 4000 rpms for the first 800 kms). You can imagine how difficult its been so far to keep the throttle checked ...  so have learnt to keep it nicely at 4K .. and there are absolutely no vibrations at all from the machine.

- hope you get to resolve your issues there.

I got to have a test ride before purchase, but not KAwasaki's own personal bike
Kawasaki say they can feel the vibraiton but think its normal
Everybody concerend with Kawasaki reckon there is nothing wrong.

Initaially when i purchased the bike i had excellent riding, no vibes and could have not been more happy, now i get the vibes and nobody at Mr K seem to care.

Funnily enough i put a washer in between the end weights last night, and i have also ordered some grip puppies, we seem to think alike.

As for the torquing of stuff i am not so sure.

- would you recall whether anything was done to or happened to the machine between the time it was vibe-free to your situation now ?

- was the bike broken in by you ? (non to sound judgmental or anything) - if it was broken in by you , was it done by the book ? The reason I ask is that there is a pretty stark warning contained in the manual about breaking it in properly, if not you will have a "broken down bike" ( manual's actual words ).

Funny enough, this breaking in lark was mentioned to me when I complained about 'vibes'..... my answer was that in 2012 its a pretty piss poor engine that has to be run in like an old Norton...... the whole maintanence thing was a bit of an issue for me, I have to say.

Good people on here gave me advice about cleaning discs and calipers and the like... thas OK ... but this is supposed to be a touring bike and one souldn't have to spend every other week buggering about with the spanners.... again tis 2012 and if Kawasaki can't build a bike that can go long distances without someone waving a tool kit at it, then they need to go back to the drawing board and start again.. :censored:

I can say that i rode the bike almost exactly as asked to by the selling dealer, in fact i did 550 miles in the first three days and it was so good i banged on about it to everybody within listning distance.

The first 2300 miles were perfect, then i had a vibration from the front disks right at the start of a long trip across Germany so could do nothing with it until i returned, which by that time i was getting numb hands, and unitl i try again on a long run dont now if the washer trick will have helped.

I get a vibe from mine but only on the righthand.
Even then not every time I ride.

I get a slight vibe on mine, and only noticeable on long rides at speed. Otherwise fine.

I know when I replaced the exhaust and forgot to torque the tank correctly, both gave some vibes.

Kawasaki have asked for my dealer to retorque the engine, ie undo the lot, lift the engine up slightly then reseat it and bolt it up in the correct sequence etc.

Next thursday, so will give it a blast after that.

Went to Demon Tweeks open day on Saturday and spoke to a really helpful guy on the Brembo stand. Anyway he can supply replacement discs at about £350 a pair, but he can't understand how the discs warp and reckons road use cannot warp discs. He assured me that there is something else to look for and feels he would struggle to warp discs on a track . Break, shatter wear out yes, but warp never. He suggests looking at sticking pistons as a starting point or other caliper issues.
I have no idea myself, this is just his opinion that I thought I would share with you. Always interesting to get another "experts" point of view.

Ok an update on the vibration issues, eventually I took it back to the dealer who this time lifted the bike up and released all the engine bolts, then reseated it and torqued it back up.

Bliss, now the bike is back to what it was when I purchased it, Simon at Kawasaki and the lads at Premier bikes have been a great help in getting this issue sorted, I have also fitted some grip puppies and now can't seem to get my arse off the bike, the trips seem to get longer and longer.

Glad to hear it's sorted. There was another Alan in Spain with the same issue which was resolved by the torquing of the engine mount.

Excellent.

And it seems like a relatively simple fix for a problem that has caused so much distress to so many riders for far too long.

Got new breakdisc and pads sendt to me from kawasaki today, they agreed to let me change it myself after I had them inspected at the dealer when i had my 7500miles service.
Did check the calipers thorogly and washed the calipers with breakcleaner and a thoothbrush.
Did press out the pistons so far I could and washed them too. Could not find any thing that where wrong.

The discs and pads I got wheren't original kawa parts,it was ferrodo discs and ferrodo HH sintred pads.
Big thanks to kawa Norway for trying something different.

The original discs has seven floating rings(don't know a better word) the ferrodo have nine rings.
And don't have the wavey edge just plain round edge.

Haven't tried it yet, started to rain and I had to pack for my long trip.
Riding down for europe tomorrow so i will get a really trial then.

Will keep you posted.
