Title: Funniest request I have ever heard!
Post by: Dive1082 on April 08, 2012, 05:49:19 PM
A guy walked up to me at 11pm last night whilst I was warming the old girl up and putting on my helmet after coming out of work.

I switched off the bike so I could hear what he wanted....

He said " I have a favour to ask you.  Me and my girlfirend..." he then pointed to a rather attractive blonde across the courtyard... I thought... "oh yeah this is gonna be interesting..."

He said "we live in the appartment up there" and pointed out a nice modern duplex place.

I'm thinking, "Really, this could be really interesting"

He then said "would you mind awfully...."

"Oh Yeah!!" me thinks

He goes "would you mind awfully pushing your bike around the corner before starting it as it wakes my girlfriend and she has to be up early every morning for work!"

I was actually beside myself laughing before I realised he was being serious!  The corner in question is a 3 in 10 hill!!!

I explained to him politely that although I understand that I start my bike at 11pm after work, it is too heavy and precious to start considering pushing it up the hill so his missus doesn't miss out on 2 minutes sleep!

He then asked if instead of starting it and running it for 10 minutes (a slight exaggaration on his part me thinks), could I not just start it and ride off?

I replied that this wasn't a car where you can just get in and go...the engine needs to get up to temp and the oil needs to circulate before setting off.  I also pointed out that it takes about 2 minutes, which is about the time it takes to put on my jacket and helmet!

He thought about this and he had obviously been drinking before saying " I'm not being funny and I am asking nicely, could you push it around the corner...."

My final reply, which seemed to do the trick was "You live in the Centre of London.  This is a 24 hour city, if you want a peaceful nights kip, fuck off to the countryside!!!

With that , he sloped away!  Funny feckers some people eh?

Lo no but wanted to express the type of "yuppy" place it was...  Seriously, he wanted me to push the old girl 100 metres up a hill just so I didn't wake his missus at 11 pm when I finished work...

God!  Over polite southern tact again :cheesy: :mfr_lol:

The boys t'north would have given it to him staright  :mfr_lol:

He did not even offer to push her (bike not sleeping beauty) up the hill with you  :ohplease:

I am actually a Northerner and in normal circumstances would have given him the good ol' Leeds kiss but as he was drunk, and his missus looked ok, I thought I had humilliated him enough.  lol

As for being inconsiderate...I don't think it is unreasonable to start the bike up at 11pm in a huge courtyard in the Centre of London at 11pm.  As I said, I run it for 2 mins whilst I put on my jacket and helmet and then I am off... I would understand it if I was revving the nipples off her but c'mon, on tickover?

The guy was a right hooray Henry.  He even said something about his girlfriends dad having a Harley to try and get some bonding going.... lol  I almost said "Oh a cock is he?" lol  But held my tongue.

:mfr_lol:  it's not really residential.  Some bright architect thought they would build apartments above the offices all around a huge courtyard.

Baffle in as Mr Plod are quite keen around here.  Although I do have a Beowulf system on, it's not bad on tickover.

I love the midnight blue colour but might add a dash of moon dust for contrast.

Are you in the Docklands? and  in IT?

New flats next to offices will surely have double or triple glass and all that they bring sound proofing wise - n'est pas ?

I can empathise with the man's frustration but saddly, I believe that could be the core issue: He is frustrated :2guns:

PMSL  Yes near Docklands...

Love the analogy of his missus... He had a few beers in him so had the beer muscles but you could see he was a bit hen pecked as his missus started giving him greif when he returned to her and told him my polite answer...

Good job I park under the CCTV camera! lol  Although he did request that I may like to park the baby in a dark disused alley way away from the offices....  I guess you know what my answer to that was!  :mfr_lol:

An old wives tale - with modern technology and oils they are where they need to be within seconds, and as for 'warming up' no need as, again moderrn stuff warms quickly and a kilometre down the road is sufficient.  Modern oils leave a coating when settled so the wear issue of the old days in no longer an issue.

No need to warm up for 2-10 minutes etc. Kit up. Get on. Start up and ride.

Thanks kev, i was resisting the urge to say that modern engines dont need the old warm up phase like the 50's, im considerate , i just start and ride, i never fit noisy cans and i dont rev, not saying this guy does but so many inconsiderate bikers give the good guys a bad name.

Well, the manual for the GTR states , 'Do not start moving or race the engine immediately after starting it, even if the engine is already warm. Run the engine for two or three minutes at idle speed to give the oil a chance to work up into all the engine parts.'

So we now know at least two people we shouldn't buy a second hand bike from.

By the time I have the bike out of the shed, gloves etc on, the temperature is already on one bar.

I don't rev the engine whilst its idling. I do have an after market can with the baffle out though, but at idle its like the stock

i think in reality , most of us , start the bike , get helmet and gloves on and then go , no revving and take it easy until the tyres warm up. A gtr at tickover with a standard exhaust should not annoy anyone, they are remarkably quiet !

As my current terraced house does not have them (surprise surprise) then  neither, I suppose, would a northern shed or garage. However, if the price is right - why not  :mfr_lol: .

Garages, even sheds are very costly to rent here which is a pity becauce so far I have not been able to get a GTR14 quote for "ungaraged overnight" . Clearly a sought after bike by the thieves.  :censored: :censored: :censored:

Meanwhile, from the underwriter's/ actuary's perspective, there is more chance of her being nicked than of me writing her off. I kinder like those odds :mfr_lol:

This (garaging thing)was never a problem with the Beamer.....funny that :mfr_lol:  Not enough street cred' to make her nickable I guess :mfr_lol:

My mate who lives in a nicer part of town, parked his BM on the drive, went back in the garage to get his lid and gloves, locked the door from inside and walked through the house to his front door to find his BM gone after leaving it unattended for less than 60 seconds. he heard nothing and saw nothing, and was tempted to claim it as abducted by aliens. Keys were in his hand all the time and not in the bike. Carole Nash were very good and paid out quickly. It was a gold coloured S reg BMW R100RT, nicked from Stockport.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! But I don't have a garage :hammer:  Unless you mean that I should widen the  front door and frame, remove step and add a ramp (which will probably be required before too long anyway) and keep her in the hall

I like it, yes I do.  And, I could install a specially weight and width adapted Stanner and she could "sleep" upstairs, have her own room even, yes, yes yes

No No No No Nooooooooo! Sorry for any misunderstanding.

It is very much on my mind and has been refered to here that the insurers won't cover me without a garage.  Never an issue with my Beamer.

When I saw (above) that great bike collection, I thought lucky buggers on this forum, when ever I see pictures, I see garages.

So the thought, (light hearted) that, maybe if I moved north, I could perhaps, having regard to what you read about property price differentials, afford to buy or rent a garage (or  even one with a house attached  )  thereby solving my insurance issue and even giving scope for a collection and a place to work on it.

As I say, just light and not knocking your abodes but rather admiring your life styles.   :sweatdrop: :sweatdrop: :mfr_lol:

OK ?

It is amazing the way threads evolve  :mfr_lol:

Check out the Lake District National Park house price scale.... which has just been reported to be one of only a handful within the U.K where prices are still rising....its great for us living here, but not so good for those wishing to move into the area

Well of course there are pockets of such exceptional beauty and scarcity of available property that they will buck the trend.

That's why you get so many caravans.  They really want to stay on.

However, if there is not in general a North South property price divide - so be it. I'll have to save up for a garage in London  :mfr_lol:

Rusty I love it! :mfr_lol:    :listencarefully: Sorry to hear that and commiserations for your brother's marital plight. :embarrassed:

(I have long thought that a vintage Duke would make a great piece of decorative art in a large enough house. )

I am at the end of the terrace and have side alley access to the rear.  There is a locked gate at the street end.

The narrowness of the alley, coupled with the narrowness of my gate, currently precludes motorcycle access.  However if I doubled up the garden access width it could work.  I wonder if that would satisfy the  ISHs (Insurance Shite Hawks).

You don't get to explain the set-up to an underwriter any more; There is not the space on the computerised forms to explain  i.e,  You get :Garaged Overnight...Yes/No

However, I will give it a go.  If nothing else, the process will provide great rant inspiration   :mfr_lol:

mate of mine keeps his dirt bike in his kitchen!!!,his insurance wouldnt cover him because his garage was not connected to his house,,,,,its about 3.0"" away from his house( along side his path)
he washes it when he comes back, puts a plastic sheet on the floor an wheels it over the patio door cill and locks up!,,,,,,and wha does his mrs think i hear you all say?????
she connects the hose etc for him to wash his bike,an puts the sheet down for him in  the kitchen to put the bike on,an while hes positioning the bike in the corner she goes out an wraps up the hose!!!!,,,shes fab fair play to her
