Collected my gtr in the uk last feb, previous owner had left all service reciepts. At the 7500 mile service he had the plugs changed and the plugs cost him 48 pounds, reason why i am looking for info is that bike is now at 15000 miles and due a good service ,but if i am correct are the plugs in a gtr iridium plugs therefore should last about 25000 miles but they dont say on reciept wether or not they replaced with iridium so just working of price in the uk would the iridiums cost about 48 pounds compared to normal plugs.Because if he had iridiums put in then i dont need to change them.

Is there a contact number for the workshop who did the previous work on any of the service records?  That could be an option to call them. They may have a policy to replace like for like and that would answer your question. The original plugs as I understand it will last for 25-30k + I'm hoping I never have to change the plugs while I own the bike because I gather it's a pig of a job to do.

I know the original plugs are expensive but I'm sure you can get them at a better price than £48.

Aaaah....i had my 8k service done recently, and had my plugs changed at the same time...i queried whether this was necessary.....the engineer informed me that it is on the schedule to be done every 8k, he said that the engine runs quite hot and therefore this shortens the plug life (not sure how accurate this is)....the plugs that came out looked clean, but had seen better days .......  :-\
It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

With my previous bike I replaced the standard plugs with iridium ones, the cost of the iridium plugs were basically the same price as normal ones. £48 sounds about right but you can check on-line

There are only solutions

Stock plugs are Iridium. I had mine replaced at 26,000 miles and the mechanic said they looked only slightly worn.
He reckoned you'd get an easy 50,000 miles use out of them.
Replacing them every 8k miles is a waste of money/resources.

At my recent 8k service the plugs had to be inspected because I've extended the warrnaty by 2 years. They were not replaced.

I'd like to learn how to change them because I think other than doing the valves the plug change has to be the second most complicated job to do on the GTR.

Kawdolph

the service was done at a kawasaki dealer which would lead me tto believe likr for like and yes i had iridums in another bike of mine and didnt need to be changed for 25000 miles,so will wait for awhile to change them.thxs for the replies.

Just done my plugs to see if I can get rid of my 1500rpm flatspot. Bit of a bitch, specially when you have big hands like me lol.
Side fairings off, all the clutter around the hole each side where you have to go in. Remove brace and loosen fairing stay. Take off connector to pencil coil and gently pry up and out. Use plug tool in bike tool kit and jobs a coconut.
Repeat for the other 3. Refitting is a reversal of the removal procedure, hmm heard that somewhere before! ::)
Quite simple. Just alot to take off and rather restricted access.

How long did it take you to do them?

Hans

it should take an hour including coffee break!  :)

Are you serious? Thats good going if thats right.

Nygie

It took me all week hahaha
Took the fairings off and frame braces and left it for a few days lol
Then looked in the manual and seeing there were no special instructions apart from removing the fairing support frame and that they used the plug spanner in the tool kit....... that's the key really!
I never even thought of looking in the toolkit ::) and of course it made specially for the job.... articulated specially for the small space.
I'm sure once you have done it a few times you may get it down to somewhere near an hour, so much faffing!
The Hayabusa was sooo much easier FOR EVERYTHING! Even the fairing panels fit properly :o

Off on a tangent slightly but .... never liked the look of/colours/Suzuki/Busa .... then yesterday one flew buy me on an 11 plate in dark blue, no luggage, except for the rider of course  ;D and I thought " OOhh, in the flesh that looks rather nice " ... but of course riding one and living with one are all very different, but goes to show what a bit of close up riding can do !! Next time I,m out near a dealer i might pop in just for a look.

They are a real good all rounder, did circa 4000 miles one trip (2 weeks) two up full luggage!
Dunno what the gen2 is like on fuel but the gen1 had a shorter range (less MPG) than the GTR
