We all, well most of us, have GTRs but how many of us actually tour regularly  ?

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not suggesting that the GTR is only good for touring and should only be used for that purpose

The GTR is an extremely  versatile bike and doesn't need to be saved for munching miles across continents, it's also a great all rounder, but how many of us could probably manage without the touring capabilities of the GTR ?

If you could manage without a GTR what would you choose and why ?

I tour 2 or 3 times a year.  Tried it with a ZRx and that was OK, by=ut the GTr is much better.
For the odd mad dash , up to 100 miles then the ZX9R comes into play
For pootling around the New Forest on the 40mph roads the Suzuki GS850G fits the bill, even though it was originally designed as a long distance tourer!

We tour about 3 times a year ..the big one is 3 weeks in the summer tramping round Europe.
If I couldn't have a GTR it would be a FJR 1300.
Had a new one in 05 (bought it for Mrs Wooks silver wedding  :whistling:) had it 4 years and covered 60k miles . Trouble free and as good as the GTR nearly ... but had to stick a Hyperpro shock on it by the 2nd week .
So if I couldn't have either of these and I wanted a new bike it would have to be the CB1300s ..
Like the above ..it can scratch it can tour it will do a track day and you have a semi decent half fairing too.
p.s
I also use the GTR for Sunday ride outs ...popping to the shops and everything else in between lol

Couple of times a year, big one next year down to Croatia and return. Toured previously on a VFR 800Fi, Blackbird and Pan, all capable tourers as is the GTR.
XJ600, VFR800, CBR1100, Varadero1000, CBR1100, STX1300, GTR1400 ?

I always 'tour' on mine.  Very rarely do I use it for work.

Don't do long distance anymore but i have done appx 80K on the 5GTRs so far. We have a camper van which i put the bike in we attach an awning and use that as our base, we like to be out at 9-10am and return 7-8pm getting as many miles in as we need to. Our preferred destinations are Scotland and Cornwall some great roads and scenery, we do require all the luggage space of the GTR Mrs Zed likes to shop lol.

If we did not require the capabilities of the GTR then i would have no hesitation going back to the SX - Awesome Bike.

When the Horns come out and the Red mist descends ( wanker time ) i go for a blast on the Monster, although i am getting itchy feet at the moment and fancy a swap but more sedate - still a twin pot though.

get a grip and deal with it

Just bought my Gtr 5 weeks ago, planning to ride over to the NW200 and do a west coast of Scotland next year
Went to the bike show and got a decent discount on the ferry to Santander again for a ride around the Picos mountains then back up to Caen and do the D-day stuff

When I bought mine in 2007 touring was the plan, as well as commuting to Isle of Dogs daily.
In 2007 we went to Germany for a few days.
In 2008 to the South of France.
In 2009 I got laid off and we haven't toured since.
Out of 73k miles probably 10k were touring.

I can't see myself riding any other bike as they all too small except for the super trailies.
Don't like the R-GS, the KTMs are too uncomfortable, Super Tenere is buzzy and expensive, Versys and Vstrom 1000s are OK but don't excite me. Don't trust the Italians or the Trumpets. Hope to try an Africa Twin sometime soon as that may be the first Honda I could like since I returned a borrowed XL600 in the mid 80s.

I go to France/Spain/Belgium at least once most years, as well as trips to Wales and Scotland. Since I am riding the bike solo on these trips (daughter now rides her own bike, wife only does day trips) I have decided to stay with lighter bikes of around the 1000 cc mark. I just don't enjoy handling the weight of the full fat touring bikes any longer.

I'm really not sure what I will buy next, the Versys will be two years old in June 2017 and so far I'm in no hurry to part with it. However, I don't like the bike used for overseas trips to pass the three year mark.

I might even buy a Bonneville T120 (1200cc) with luggage and a screen! My brother is about to convert to a T100 Bonneville (the smaller engine) from a Tracer, so I will see how that goes.

It was my plan when I first purchased the GTR to go touring Europe.  It work and family problems prevented this.
But I've only managed uk ones mostly wales where I have friends living and around the south coast.
Still love the GTR I it's there if the chance arrives in the not so distant future

We have done the Picos twice now, you won't be disappointed  then rode onto San Sebastian for a few days, lovely place, then over the border and through France to Caen, after the Picos we found that leg very boring, you'll see why the German's made good progress and why it's good tank country  :tank:

I toured on my GSX14 for 3 years happily but then the Wife said she wouldn't mind coming along so we did a week on the GSX and she loved it so i said I'm not ruining my baby on all trips, outings and touring..  if she wants to come (seriously) every year then i need to get a proper Touring bike.
My GSX14 is my plaything and each year it comes in the house for the next round of Mods...

I got a 2010 GTR last year and so far have done 8 days with the wife round Europe.  Assen and recently did the Catalan MotoGP.  1150 miles in 2 days.  2 days stop over for the race and 2 days 1150 miles back.  heck of a ride and the GTR and i did it with ease.

i will do 2 Tours per year..  next year the B500 Baden Baden i think.

Although i will be getting the ecu flashed as its a tad slow for me, I'd like a bit more pep!
