The latest TT product (400) looks like a very good alternative to Garmin, however I wonder if the winding roads,  hill roads, and round trip options are any good

I've owned a Zumo 660 for about 4 years or so and generally its been good, although it does often make very strange route options which is very irritating to say the least, running the  device settngs as a 'car' doesn't completely eradicate this problem

I owned  a TT rider many moons ago which was reliable and plotted good sensible routes, its operating system would be outdated now though

My question is does any one use the latest breed of TomTom that can offer comparison against a Garmin

I actually have the Tom Tom 750 go, in a water proof casing for back up when abroad, and it does seem to take you o better roads than the Garmin. But a bugger to see the screen, so not the best.

I agree on the Garmin Zumo mapping, my 550 managed to put me in someones drive in France one time lol

BTW, does the Zumo 660 fit the BMW cradle ( Navigator cradle ). ?

I bought a Tomtom 400 only last week.  Came with car and bike mounts and a carry bag.  Nice that it also included 2 locking devices when attached to a bike.

Its a completely different interface to Rider2.  More like an Android system.  Easy to zoom in and out etc with 2 fingers.  It connected to my HTC phone and my old Scala headset without any dramas and works seemlessly together.  Maps, traffic and spped cameras are updated for the limetime of the device, so that's an annual saving of perhaps £70

Planning is much quicker and you don't have to faff about selecting POIs etc first.  Just type in a name of part of an address and it finds it.  I haven't tried windy routes or thrilling (!) routes yet, but seems a good idea.

I think it will stand up very well against a Garmin.  OK, you can't load music on to it, but that's not my bag, so didn't come into the equation.  Feels very sturdy and the bike and car mounts are an improvement over the Rider ones

PLANNING your route yourself before going has to be the way, Garmin or Tom Tom. Plan on the PC, upload and follow. No putting your trust in some algorithm to decide the route you'll take.

SatNavs come into their own more when you arrive at a town/city and want to find a place at the last minute.

That's how I use mine. Others may disagree.

Ive had tom tom and garmin , even both in the sme car at the same time. Im defo a garmin person , i find them easier to use and view . found the tomtom a bit fiddly and not as clear as the garmin. they both do the job but the garmin irritates me less than the tomtom does.

ended up giving the tomtom to some one i didnt particularly care for haha

Get yourself a copy of the Free version of Tyre to Travel. It's a great tool whether you have Garmin or Tom Tom. It can convert between both route types, but if you are sharing routes between mixed owner groups I'd recommend using GPX (GPS vanilla flavour) format.

http://www.tyretotravel.com/download-tyre/

If you need to publish routes on the web for others to download then I can also recommend the http://ww.motogoloco.com site. Here's one I published recently https://www.motogoloco.com/map/?route=15452 As with most routing software put a waypoint just AFTER each major turn and most SatNags will then follow the same route rather than making up their own.

You may also find this starter article helpful for downloading any routes found online, but mainly the Motogoloco site. http://www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1328
