I wonder insurance wise then are you supposed to remove the ignition key ?

With the KIPASS energised but engine off, turn the key fully left to the lock position. Walk away so KIPASS fob is out of range and the stove key is locked into place with the steering lock applied.
Complies with insurance wanting you to leave the steering lock on.

............and I always find it helps to push down on the fuel filler cap when turning the key. It takes some of the pressure off the lock.

So the advice so far is either....

1) Give it a yank and hope for the best
2) Leave well alone

Option 2) looks good to me !!!

1/ Providing you can hear the mechanism clicking when you depress the key, yes.

2/I would NOT leave it in, I think that is half the problem. A bit of lock lubricant, and use the key once in a while to prevent any corrosion/crud building up

O.C. the Salesman apparently started the bike, as they usually do at his dealership, leaving it to warm up. "Stove Key" in ignition and fob in Salesman's hand. Salesman then went into the Showroom to deal with another customer, leaving fob on the desk for demo rider to pick up. Demo rider had already signed the paperwork and went straight off without collecting the fob, they tell me.

gotcha, what a cock up,

Mind you I did once manage to drive a Ford Kuga (button start) I owned into town, turn the engine off, only to realise that I'd left the key fob at home in  a jacket pocket that I'd just changed out of after starting the car

Just this morning I started our Prius up for my wife and had to remind her to make sure that she had her fob with her..  I think though that the Prius has enough warnings to let her know that the fob is missing.  The bike has a warning also but it takes some time to come on.  I'll have to test that one day to see how long but it does tell you the fob is missing at some point.  I don't know if it's time, distance, or both.
