 :agree:

I saw that yesterday... agreed, VERY sobering!

That "ugh" noise he made as he braced himseld for collision really hit home for me. When a cyclist ran into me in town whilst filtering I distinctly remember making the same noise and it really brought home that feeling of "SHIT, I'm about to get taken out here and there's sweet FA I can do about it". The front end of that car was a complete mess, I dread to think of his injuries.

Seeing stuff like that is almost powerful enough to give up biking altogether. Nevertheless, he was doing a crazy speed and in one of the worst possible places. I don't generally speed all that much but this will definately slow me down. I think most of us love to go fast but when I do I always try and think that this sort of thing might happen at any moment or that my front tyre could blow out and "goodnight it's game over!"

Let's all ride safe comrades.

:ohplease:

A very sad account and a waste of life. To see the conclusion from the riders perspective, knowing what the outcome was, was quite upsetting and I have absolute respect for the family who have allowed this footage to be released as I'm sure there will be derogatory comments bantered around in some circles regarding the riders speed. Who here hasn't travelled at those speeds....lets face it, we've all done it.

Very sad indeed.

Tragic , all down to inexperience  never overtake at speed when there's a left or right coming up ,

Very sobering

I've only done those speeds on a motorway and always find it too risky on other roads with junctions etc.

I have just signed up to do my Skills For Life with the IAM. I need a lot more experience so I am not just another statistic of a bike accident through my own fault.

I know I need to slow myself down and watching this vid just goes to show how quick things can go wrong out on the road.

RIP David Holmes. He had 22 years of biking but he should have had many more years.

Debs,

Good on you for being proactive, and starting to get more skills. I did the IAM training and passed my test a few years ago now, and I have found it a hugely useful experience.

Whilst I think 97mph was too much for that road and situation, the training has taught me to watch the front wheels and driver in situations like that car pulling across. Easy to type of course, less easy to do, but I would hope the training would mean I would have spotted this situation unfolding earlier, braked sooner and gone round the back of the Clio with just a change of underwear needed.

RIP David, and I have the greatest respect for the mother agreeing to show this.

Martin.
65,000 miles now. Loving this bike.

I think I'm going to look into doing some advanced stuff too...

Hats off to the family for releasing that video ... goes to show how quickly your life can come to an end. :(

O.C.

I try to follow some simple guidlines when riding

Stay within my limits, (which, incidentally, are much less than those of my my machine)
Stay within the limits of the road conditions
Watch for 'unseen' vehicles at junctions, the movement of a wheel indicates a potential disaster
If you can smell cow shit or see it on the road there's probably a tractor around the next bend
Treat every other road user as a complete pillock
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

This rider was travelling too fast, and his mother/parents have been very, very brave in allowing the release of that video.

BE KIND...
