There's now a 7" sat nav on the market that has a built in freeveiw TV what a great idea this is, how long before the muppets start putting these in the middle of the windscreen.

The "sorry didn't see you mate" excuse is now going to apply to buses

Didn't think it was legal to put a TV in the front of a car but guess it is exploiting some loophole due to the satnav function

No - Legislation is specific for TV's.  If it is a TV in that mode then it would be an offence.
Four is fun.  Six is sex.

My understanding is that you should not block the area of the windscreen that is swept by the wipers....  but its never seems to be enforced.

Do those TV/GPS units not have some form of software lock that will prevent the TV from being active if teh vehicle is in motion?

I found this on TV's which might shed some light on the matter.
Regulation 109 Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regs 1986.
No person shall drive or cause or permit to be driven a motor vehicle on a road if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, directly or by reflection, a television or similiar apparatus except apparatus used to display informaion:-

1/ about the state of the vehicle or its location or the road location.
2/ to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle
3/ to assist the driver to reach the their destination.

So I interpret that as a screen which provides information on the status of the car, GPS tracker info etc.  Or Cameras fitted to the vehicle to assist in parking etc or your sat nav device.

Thats a direct lift out of the Hughes Guide to Law (Traffic).

Many years ago when I was on Traffic and the Provida Video system was introduced ( those of you in the job will realise just how LONG ago that was ! ) we had to cover the video screen so the driver couldn't see it  ... the usual botch job of a bit of rubber matting cut to a similar shape and gaffer taped on !! it was all to do with Con and Use offences of drivers not being able to see " cinamagraphic " images .... I would think that has been updated as Mr Wolf has shown. I would also imagine that if you were involved in an accident whilst watching the TV you would be looking at Sec 3 " Driving without Due Care and Attention " and or " Dangerous Driving " ... along those lines I am sure.

We have retractable screens now in Kenwood music systems which will play DVD's etc and from which you can view video.

Coaches used to have to closed curtains to show films on-board, to avoid other drivers begin able to see the screens!

If there is some interlock its buried in the small print - I suspect its like regular satnav's where a warning screen pops up advising you not to enter data whilst moving which you turn off

Rusty, that was on the old cars, 2005 - 2009. The new cars have very flash touch screen monitors that operate virtually everything now.

Boomer

Soon they will be projecting Britains Got Twats directly onto the windscreen so we can all get killed by Mr(s) "I have 10 things to do that are far more important than actually driving the car".

Oh god! I just realised that I'm a Grumpy Old Man!

COOL!  ;D

Nicely put..... Let face it most of what you see from the front of your windscreen is a comedy any how.
