Someone here will know the answer...

I have a Zumo 550, mounted on the LHS bar, via a RAM set up.

Now, being based in London, and it's associated thieving scroates, I want to have the Zumo Mount powered by the little screw-in fixture at one end of the cable (it's screwed into the Cradle/Mount), and the cigarette socket at the other end.
This means that when I park up, I can unplug from the 12v adapter in the 'dash' and unscrew and remove the RAM mount, so taking ALL the bits 'n bobs with me.

Now, has anyone done this? If not, why not! (a possible little gold mine as a part time business?)

CAN anyone do this for me? I of course will supply the relevent items, (Plus beers...)
The cable does not need to be long, just long enough for the bars to move full left + a little bit (Risers etc).

Thanks,
Nick.

the wires for the cradles power are currently bare wires that go to the bikes power, buy a generic cig light plug off ebay and solder that to your cradle wiring, thus leaving the car cig lighter cable intact

Can you post a pic or two? That would help

Yep, thats what I would do

Just be sure it is 12 Volt rather than 5 Volt (USB) before you connect anything

there is no usb on the sat nav or on the bike so I have no idea what that means but as long as you put the plug onto the exact same wires that attached to your bikes power then go cant go wrong .

Sat-Nav works on a nominal 5 volts. If you plug the satnav straight to the bike it will blow the sat-nav circuits.

Sat nav mount will have a voltage dropper so should be ok with the normal connector shown.
I believe the OP wishes to remove  the sat-nav AND irt's mount for security when off the bike, hence wishing to wire it through the 12v accessory socket.

I have ordered a new Garmin Zumo 550 Cable, comes with a 2A fuse I believe, and a new 'marine grade' cigarette plug, will solder the two together, and see if that works!
Unless anyone knows any better....?

I think the plug comes with a 10A fuse in it too.

Boomer

The cigarette plug contains a 12v to 5v converter.
Most Garmins & TomToms now use a mini-USB or micro-USB connector which is 5v only!
Mini is on the left, micro is on the right.

So, you can use any 2Amp 12v to 5v converter with your SatNav.

The easiest method is to connect a cigarette lighter SOCKET to your accessory connectors inside the fairing.

Plug the 12v-5v cigarette lighter plug into it and tape it all together.
Use cable ties to keep everything in place.
Make sure you cover the mini or Micro-USB plug if you leave the bike out in the rain.

Boomer,
I've gone the 12v cigarette plug plus the Zumo 550 cradle lead route. Got the plug today, just awaiting the lead.
Thought it'd be easier that way, 'cos I can use the cigarette socket on the 'dash', that way, when I park up, I can unscrew the RAM mount and take the lot with me!

The Zumo 550 cradle plug is powered by 12 volts so the cigarette lighter idea you have will work.

You could also tap into the bike's accessory connector with the Zumo wiring harness that comes with the cradle and then put something like bullet connectors in- line and separate the wiring there. That would probably be easier than pulling that little plug out of the cradle each time you want to remove it.

Being on the other side of the pond, I have to ask though, what is, or are, scroates?

I think he wants to use the plug in the cradle, not the USB plug. The cradle takes 12 volts directly. By the way, the USB port cannot be accessed on a 550 while it is in the cradle anyway and if the unit is powered through the USB plug, it does into 'mass storage' mode and will not function as a GPS anyway.

By the way George, good to see you here in your native environment.

BDF,
Scroate(s) abbreviation of scrotum, a low-life, young, thieving, p.o.s.

Happy to oblige, translations from sarf east lundun, to sherman all part of the service

Thanks. I am actually pretty fluent in English- English translation but of course not all of the nuances. I had a very good friend from Norwich (sounded like Norrich). :-)
