Hi all,

After chenging my oil some 1000 miles ago, every time I started the ol girl up, when she warmed up, smoke started to come up through the front console.  This happened until it had burned off then went away.  It only happened from cold and when she had been stood.  There were no leaks that I could see and I thought it was where I had maybe spilled some oil on the down pipes when changing the oil but thought it would have stopped.

I decided to investigate furhter and do another oil change so I took the fairing off (God why are these so difficult...) I can't see any evidence of a leak or oil anywhere.  I changed the oil and filter again and this seemed to have solved the problem until today when I am stopped at some lights and all of a sudden a big puff of smoke came up from where the radiator is.  it smells like oil but there is no leak or anything....

Has anyone got any ideas?

Hi

I have a similar problem. Ever since the bike was last servcied by the dealer there is an oily smell and very slight evidence of oiling smoke coming from the RHS front fairing when the bile is started up from cold. Once the engine has warmed up then its generally fine for the rest of the day.

I have had a look and I can't see evidence of an oil leak, there are no drips on the garage floor and oil consumption is normal.

Its going into the dealer in a couple of weeks time for them to have a look.

So I would also be interested in anybody thoughts as to what it could be.

Kind regards

Steve

dont know ,but is there any breather pipes ,which may be sending out the fumes ?

Dive1082

Hi Steve,

Sounds like it could be the same thing... let me know what your mechanic says.

I can't see any breather pipes but why would they be smoking?

breather pipes sometimes smoke if they are releasing any back pressure.

Dive1082

Hi Kieth,

That certainly does make sense as it was like a release of smoke similar to say a pressure hose.  Would this be a normal thing or do you think I should be worried about it?  The oils levels are good, the temp runs fine and there is no smoke from the exhaust.

i dont know if the gtr has any breather pipes, it was just a hunch , if your bike is running fine and you do not get any smoke coming from your exhaust on the overrun,  when you open the throttle again after shutting it down i wouldn't worry about it.  you could always ask the dealer they dont charge for advice.
good luck .

Lol  just a bit funny sitting at the lights an when I open her up to set off, it is like a genie coming out of the lamp with all the smoke.... :-)

Hi

Your description sounds very like a well know effect with GTR's when water gets on to the exhausts - you get clouds of steam/mist come up through the fairing when water has got on to the exhausts when stationory/pulling away.

It probably isn't water but I would check the coolant levels for the radiator, just in case.

Kind regards

Hi Steve,

Will check the levels but I don't think this is water vapour (steam).  It is very much "smoke" and oil smelling.

- either leaking cam cover and/or leaking cam position sensor.

Saying that, on my 25000 mile service, I had to leave the bike in BK because the rocker cover gasket was perishing.   It wasn't't leaking, but was getting thin at 1 point.

As its a big job to get to they would rather keep the bike in and order the part to save money, rather than having to take it apart again.

Just a thought.

Hi

An update..............

The bike went in for a routine servcie to day and the mechanic had a quick look at possible causes. They seem to think that there may be an issue with the rocker cover gasket. As it is one of the most difficult places/time consuming places to get to they are going to wait until the bike is in for a major service when they will have a bit more time.

Kind regards

Steve

Hmmm may account for my current issue of losing power....
